Otferreb eitxticleo. An Anecdote of the Far West.—An arnasingcof eespondent of the New York Tribuno, writing from 4 t&1 in the West, relates the following - circumstance: "Speaking of living, reminds me of an anecdote calatettto me by a profesior in ono of our colleges.— Sent hereby the State for scientifical purposes, he took with him, as a companion, a yoenger brother, who had just graduated, and an old hunter, for a guide, eook, iota provider general: Leaving, one day, a clearing in which some fine peas were growing, they took along a small quantity to give relish to a dinner some day in the torest. At length, after a hard forenoon's work, they pitched their encampment one day on the borders of a lake in the heart of the woods. "Come:" paid . the professor, "let us have those peas to-day." .So, while be was taking some observations, the old hunter and the young graduate prepared the dinner. After a while the professor said he noticed an unu sual chuckling between the student and the bunter.— Suspecting some trickery, he sauntered quietly up to *lards the fire; casting his eyes around, he observed they were making wooden spoons with theirpanknives. All at once it flashed upon him thatthey had nothing but penknives to eat their peas with, and that there WU a conspiracy to rob him of his share. Saving asothing,he walked to the lake shore, and picking op cne of those large muscle shells, holding more than an ordinary spoon, be fitted a split stick to it fora handle, and clapped them both in his pocket. Then saunter ing back, is order to prevent them making very exten sive preparations, he kept around until the peas were cooked. His presence rather obstructed their design, and they were aide to finish but very shallow spoons -after all. The pews were at length poured into the 'common dish, and le! it was all soup. To prevent the possibility of the professors' getting a moiety, they bad cooked them so that the peas were like "rari. nantes in gur gite vasto."--• loiagine them at length all seated on the ground around theirfood, each stabbing with his penknife at the peas, which fledged under tho surface at every blow, eluding every effort to catch them. After this process had been carried on a while, to the ill-suppres sed merriment of the student and bunter, they whip ped out their wooden spoons, and, flourishing them over their heads with a loud "Hurrah!" made a dive at the peos.4 ,- The professor coolly drew forth his huge rims - de-shed and stick, and, fitting them together, began to kale up the soup. The hunter and the grad ontestoriped in utter amazement, and with their spoons suspended half way to their mouths, gazed at the quiet professor; who, without uttering a word or changing a feature, diligently plied his shell. In a few moments every pea had vanished; and the bunter, as ho licked empty etkicin, confessed he had been fairly out-nut mceuVred. SALE OF-THE MAIN LINE OF THE PUB LIC - WORKS OF PENNSYLVANIA. Tes- timonials and recommendations of the strongest kind aro constantly being received from all quarter, by the Proprietor and Agents. In relieving cases of Asthma, Difficulty in Breathing Pain in the Side and Breast, it is unequalled; in cur ing Bronchitis, Coughs and Colds, and in short remov ing all the symptoms of approaching Pulmonary Con gumption, IT3 SUCCESS HAS HERIf UNPARALELLED No other medicine has proved itself so really inval uable.- Thousands in Pittsburgh and the vicinity, are. as far as human agency is concerned, indebted to Dr. Duncan's Expectorant Remedy fur prolonging life and health. Many persons after using the other cough medicines of tho day without etrect, have been com pletely restored by this truly GREAT DISCOVERY in the HEALING ART. A strong and undoubted evidence of Ps worth, is to be found ;n the high degree of popular favor which it has received since its introduction into the West.— Wherever an agency has been opened for its sale, and wherever it has received a fair and honest trial, it has become firmly established as a 'STANDARD FAMILY MEDICINE. It is rapidly superseding the use of the many nos trums, which have so longimpo, sed upon the communi ty, which have obtained their name only by pulling and braggadocio, and which are DOW destined to be thrown aside to make way for the best cough medicine of the present ago. It is not pretended that it will positively cure every, case of the disease, for which it is designed, but it is honestly believed that in every case where it gets a fair chance it will effect a cure. Coming, then, before the people with the highest recommendations, it it at least, worthy of a trial by all who are afflicted with any of that large and dangerous class of diseases. The following is a specimen of the numerous testi monials which we have received. It is from a PHY SICIAN of high standing in Ohio. Dear Sir—Having had occasion to witness the ef fect of Dr. Duncan's Expectorant Remedy on Mr Eli Young in a case of Pulmonary Consumption, 1 felt it my duty to make a briefstatement in order that others that are or may be afflicted with the same complaint may be benefitted by the same remedy. He was attacked with inflammation in the left lobe of the lungs in March 18 43, attended with acute pain, great difficulty of breathing, and a severe cough, which preceded rapidly to suppuration: and not withstanding the use and application of the best remedies prescribed by Jur authors, the complaint in a few days began to exhibit evident symptoms of ulceration. In this distressing stage of the complaint, I had re couise to Dr Deacon's Expectorant Remedy for con enmption, which had the effect of checking the disease immediately, and in a few days the pain ceased, •the breathing became free and easy, the cough left him, and the expectoration subsided, the consequences of which was that in using six bottles he ha.s recovered his health, and is restored to his family. 1 do hereby certify the above to be true statement of my case as far as comes within my knowledge. _ Mt Vernon, May 28, 1844. COPY OF A LATUR FROM DNS. LAWRENCY AN H6NRICKSON New Lebanon, Slate of New York. WORTHY FRlEND:—Having made a thorough trial of the Medicated Vavor Bath for four months past, in our societies in New Lebanon and Watervliet, we think it but justice to state, that we consider it a valuable improvement in the healing art. Its power in reduc ing both chronic and acute inflanunion, also fn remov ing spasms, is certainly very great. In cases of ob structed perspiration, it is unquestionably the safest and best remedy that we have ever seen. Several persons in our society, who were scarcely free from a catarrhal affection during most of the winter months for several years past, have found permanent relief by using the Bath a few times; and the predisposition to take cold, as it is commonly termed, seems to be whol ly removed. Obstructed perspiration, is certainly in ear changeable climate, one of the most fruitful sour ces of disease, and any remedy that is capable of re moving the predisposition to it, must be considered a great blessingto mankind; and as such we do not hesi tate to recommend the Medicated Vapor Bath.
