I cheerfully recognize your right, as a respected dam ocrat of the good old county of York, to make this calls upon me, and I have only to regret that my public en gagements here are so various and pressing, awl* can not spare the time to give you such an answer ILO I could desire and as you deserve Previous to Mr Muldenberg's nomination, b fourth of March Convention, my position was,****, strict neutrality between him and Mr Shunk. I. Ititsellr the that befit were pee-eminently qualified to conduct - affairs of the State with wisdom and success, at the present critical crisis; and should have been equally -* satisfied with the selection ~.f either. Warmly and gratefully at:ached to both, I neither felt nor express ed a personal preference for the one over the other. But the Convention have decided the question in favor of Mr. Muhleniterg: and I consider it extremely fortunate that, lamitht our existing emhti to assmentis, the nomination has fallen upon such a man. Formerly, in Pennsylvania, the wheels of the Mate Government moved along so SlO.4oSlify over the beaten track, that ' any man of integrity, with the most common qtialifuns lions. was competent successfully to discharge the du ties or Governor. Unfortunately, those good old times have passed away, mid we now require an experieneial and skilful pilot at the helm to weather the storm. With a debt of mole than fitly millions impending over us which must he paid, with tier vast Internal Improvements which must be wisely and economical ' ly managed so as 0. yield thelargest profit at the least expel..., and with other serious obstacles in our way to prosperity. which I need not enumerate, the crisis demands ti Gore , nor, not only of unxpotted integrity, hut of extensive practical knowledge, sound judgment and unwaverin g firmness. Mr Mahlenberg is the very man for the times. Ile possesses these qualifi cations, in an eminent degree, and shove all, he is tru ly an honest man whom temptation can never seduce from the path of duty. During a long life, no shadow of suspicion has ever ra=ted upon his personal integri ty. IL is impossible to be in Ida company for an hour without forming the most decided opinion that he is an honest man. Frank and fearless in his nature, as becomes a democratic Statesmen, he does not conceal his thoughts, hut speaks right out like one who is neither eshamed nor aft aid to avow his sentiments be lose the world. Under the administration of such a man, the people will cheerfully submit to taxation to redeem their plighted faith and the honor of our good old Commonwealth; because they will feel an entire confidence that their contributions will not be mums. &red by trailing politicians, but will be faithfully ap. plied to the payment of the public creditor. Mr Muldenberg is a native of Lancaster—the place of my own residence. He is the son of the late Rev. Dr 141uhlenbergh, who for many veers previous to his death had been the Pastor of the German Lutheran C hutch in that city, and was a man universally beloved by his own congregation and universally respected by all who knew him. Although ho never took Key active part in politics, yet his principles wore known to have been strongly democratic. Hi: son Henry early imbibed these principles and has ever since been a democrat. not merely in profession, as so mady are, . but in principle; not merely in word hot in deed. I have been intimately acquainted with Mr Mulder). berg over since December 1829, when be first took his se-it in Congress. I well recollect that in common with his collengues, I soon learned to estireatilighly the soundness and steadiness of his principles dlfil that strong practical common sense for which he is distin guished. From the very first, lie was considered by . us as a great acquisition to the Pennsylvania Delega tion. It is true that he spoke seldom, but when he did address the House, he was always listened to with pro found attention, and he soon acquired a much greater - influence with his fellow members than most of those Iwhose names were daily in the newspapers: On my return to Congress in Decomber,lB34, hay- v ing -bee,, absent between three and four years, I still found Mr Muhlenburgh in the House; but with e t rep- :: utation grently, increased and an influetica greatly ex ' tended. In the war which had been waged, in the mean timA, say the Bank of the United States against General Jackson, he was a pillar of strength in sup poet of the admiuistration. In the hoar of deepest. darkness. when that corrupt and corrupting 'imam-. tion was bringing all its forces into battle against the hero and the sage who then administered thiS Govern. meat, and when many wosk disciples quailed and • many even deserted the cause of Democracy, Mr. .Muhlenberg stood the More firm amidst the Awful. conflict. To him belongs the distinguished honor of,. having moved and carried the previous question in February 1334, thus terminating the Bank panic war which had raged for more than two months in the House of Representatives. I have more than one* heard Gosseral Jackson himself speak in the strongest terms of the support which he had received thew:wit out this conflict from General Muhlenborg, as be al. • ways called him. .and when. on one occasion, I told him that Mr. .lluldenbere was no Genetal, hit replV was—"no mutter, he ituzbt to have been a Gertecal. 4 Respected by eU, Mr Mahleoberg continued, ably . and faithfully to represent his diarist in Congress - tin-; . til February 1835, when he was appointed our -first Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Austria.
