ultimo, until yesterday; and as it has been so long de
layed upon the way, I hasten to give it an answer.—
You ask me for information relative "to the public lifir
and principles," of Henry A. 4 ,Muhlenberg, the dips
'cratic candidate for Governor, for the use both of yours
self and neighbors, and you justly state that I "bays
seen much of his course in public business."
I cheerfully recognize your right, as a respected dam
ocrat of the good old county of York, to make this calls
upon me, and I have only to regret that my public en
gagements here are so various and pressing, awl* can
not spare the time to give you such an answer ILO I
could desire and as you deserve
Previous to Mr Muldenberg's nomination, b
fourth of March Convention, my position was,****,
strict neutrality between him and Mr Shunk. I. Ititsellr
the
that befit were pee-eminently qualified to conduct -
affairs of the State with wisdom and success, at the
present critical crisis; and should have been equally -*
satisfied with the selection ~.f either. Warmly and
gratefully at:ached to both, I neither felt nor express
ed a personal preference for the one over the other.
But the Convention have decided the question in
favor of Mr. Muhleniterg: and I consider it extremely
fortunate that, lamitht our existing emhti to assmentis, the
nomination has fallen upon such a man. Formerly,
in Pennsylvania, the wheels of the Mate Government
moved along so SlO.4oSlify over the beaten track, that '
any man of integrity, with the most common qtialifuns
lions. was competent successfully to discharge the du
ties or Governor. Unfortunately, those good old times
have passed away, mid we now require an experieneial
and skilful pilot at the helm to weather the storm.
With a debt of mole than fitly millions impending
over us which must he paid, with tier vast Internal
Improvements which must be wisely and economical
' ly managed so as 0. yield thelargest profit at the least
expel..., and with other serious obstacles in our way
to prosperity. which I need not enumerate, the crisis
demands ti Gore , nor, not only of unxpotted integrity,
hut of extensive practical knowledge, sound judgment
and unwaverin g firmness. Mr Mahlenberg is the
very man for the times. Ile possesses these qualifi
cations, in an eminent degree, and shove all, he is tru
ly an honest man whom temptation can never seduce
from the path of duty. During a long life, no shadow
of suspicion has ever ra=ted upon his personal integri

Mr Muldenberg is a native of Lancaster—the place
of my own residence. He is the son of the late Rev.
Dr 141uhlenbergh, who for many veers previous to his
death had been the Pastor of the German Lutheran

by his own congregation and universally respected by
all who knew him. Although ho never took Key
active part in politics, yet his principles wore known
to have been strongly democratic. Hi: son Henry
