LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, I t WargiVrodiairotigioriviteitimi. 15 1: Watchman Shot. —A Lieutenant of the night watch was severely wounded in Alleghe gheny on Saturday night at a late hour. It ap pears that two officers of the detective police were in chase of a deserter, and had succeeded in.tracing him to a house on Robinson street. They had no reliable evidence to prove that the man of whom they were in search was in the house indicated, so accordingly they waited on the corner, that if, perchance the deserter should happen to Issue from the house they would ef fectually secure him. They waited there so long that they thistly attracted the attention of the night watch, two of whom on passing in quired who they were, and•what was their busi ness. The detectives returned a satisfactory answer, and the officers passed on. Shortly afterwards Lieutenant Maclisainey of the night watch came up, and put the same question to them. It seems that they did not explain them. selves to the satisfaction of the Lieutenant, who departed in search for help to arrest the sus nested individuals/KM his return lie found them ins house, into which he demanded admission but was perem torily refused. The watch then forced the door, and found the detectives, whom they immediately attempted to arrest; a scuttle ensued, and during the affray a pistol Was dis charged from the hands of one of the detectives, inflicting a severe wound in the fleshy part of the thigh of the Lieutenant. The detectives were immediately put under arrest. One claims that the pistol was discharged accidentally, and Was only at half cock at the time. In whatever way the accident happened, the detective should certainly be more careful in the use of Ore arms, especially when an officer in the ills crargeof his duty is concerned. They were both admitted to bail for the amount of $2,000. Night Watchman il'otauder.l.—On Satur day night several fussy individuals met on the corner of Grant and Fifth streets, and created a disturbance to the great annoyance of the neighborhood. At last some difficulty arose among themselves, and a serious disturbance was menaced. Ms. McGrady of the night watch perceiving the state of things, and Judging that he could not effectually attempt to arrest any of the party alone, dropped his mace as a sign for help. At this Juncture a young man named Patrick Green, who was one of the most trouble some of the party attempted to make his escape. Another watchman who had arrived in company with McCrady, endeavored to arrest the fugitive , but ineffectually. McGrady then started after him and succeeded in catching him, when Green struck at him with a large carving knife, wound- mg him severely in the neck. Fortunately the knife was not sharp, or else the consequences might have proved fatal, especially as the wound is in the region of the carotid, or jugular artery, j which once severed defies all remedy, and death 1 is inevitable. The perpetrator of the deed im- ; mediately fled to his own house situated in the rear of Grant street, but on the officers arriving they surrounded the building and succeeded in arresting him. lie was thenceforth conveyed to I the watch house, and yesterday morning was committed in default of e1.,000 bail. Green Is a young laboring man, stoutly built and capable of i a great deal of endurance. lie i. only about two ! years in this country and has not been married over six months. The wounded man is said to be out of all danzo; . Meeting lu the Second Silaro,-0:1 Sat urday evening a meeting was held by the ; ismaxianar cies C CP' Rif tens of the Second Waid for the purpose of de- termining what niernAires bhotild be adopted in 1 A m erican Organs and Melodeons, order to till the quota of the ward before the Lth I No. 12 Bissell's Block, St. Olair St. of September. As it was announced that bust- ! iness of the utmost importance to the ward, large number of enrolled men were present at the appointed place, the Duquesne House, and proceeded with the greatest alacrity to consider the subject on hand. They were determined to put everything fu operation which would tend to avert. the drat t. Several able addresses were delivered t,i the audience, urging on the people to unite their efforts for the common welfare pf the ward. On the whole we doubt not that this meeting will have a goodenect upon the citizens . and urge them to action, so that in a short time they will be in a position to vie with the most fortunate wards in the city in that respect Troops for she West.—Four regiments of one hundred days men passed through this city on Friday going to different points in the West. The 196th, 197th, 192 d Pennsylvania regiments, and the 00th Massachusetts, numbering in all it is said, 3,890 men, all of whom except the latter regiment were stationed in Baltimore during the last few weeks. The 10-74 Pennsylvania which after a brief stay left our city on Satur day morning at two o'clock, was composed ex clusively of Philadelphians, and was command ed by Col. Wm. B. Thomas. It is stated that not less than two hundred attaohees of the Cut. tom Rouse enrolled their names in this regiment, and the Colonel himself held a very lucratic of flee in Philadelphia before he joined the corn mend. Reortalting.—The volunteer movement in this city has received a new stimulus, and re cruits are coming In fast. Quite a number are being enrolled daily and• having received their bounties, are mustered into the service. Some difficulty was experienced in providing a bounty fund sufficient to pay the recruits, but this ob stacle having been surpassed, the volunteer movement was iiiprogressive as ever. Wo un derstand that owing to a deficiency in the bounty fund, for which theiiewly enlisted men could not be rewarded immediately, several refused to be mustered hate the service, but that evil being remedied, they again returned and were duly sworn it There is a sufficient Burn of money at present to pay all recruits, so that no one need be deterred from enlisting on this head. it.stotherßittabarglier Dead.—lt has been announced that Col. H. P. McDowell departed this life on Friday last in Washington City. De ceased was a native of Pittsburgh, and well known to our citizens, many of whom can claim his intimate friendship. Previous to the war breaking out he served a term in the legislature, and upon hostilities breaking out he was elected Colonel of a three months regiment, and lame_ diately repaired to the AM. On his return to this city after the expiration of hie term he as_ misted in raising a cavalry company with wiom he proceeded to Washington where he held a clerkship until his demise. His remains will be brought home for interment. Coroners Inquest—On Saturday afternoon Coroner McClurg arrived at the appointed time at sharpsburg, to hold an inquest in the late aomicide case. Our readers are already aware that a young lad !named Purcell met his death n such &manner laet weekthat when the inquest was held the jury could nokagree whether it was 'row injuries received at the hands of Joseph Samuels or from erysipelas, which was found ,o have Infected the body co much so that the issistin g physician deemed it dangerous to hold to inquest on the body accordingly the jury was adjourned till Saturday afternoon when alter lue consideration the jury returned a verdict hat Purcell came to his death by erysipelas. Body Reeovered.—On Saturday morning ifter a diligent and protracted search the body 1 a young lad uras found who met his death by frowning on the previous evening in the Mon mgahels, river in tha vicinity of dam No. 1. His tame was Sohn Scott, between eight and nine rears of age, and his parents are residents of the dghth ward. An inquest was held on . the body by Coroner tic Clung soon after the body was recovered. A mrdict was returned in accordance with the .Dove facts, that John Scott accidentally met his leath by drowning. Per Diarrhoea ar. The Great Beat-pace.—The great boat ; race at Poughkeepsie is attracting numerous spectator* from all parts of the Staten. This city is especially anxious as to the issue, and large crowds left here for the scene, of the con test on Saturday and Sunday, the number that were leaving was quite large ? which fast shows that the citizens feella particulir Interest in the two great four oared ccfnteete.. Ve are assured that they will not be blikikwatil in risking their greenbacks on the tastier, and, doubtless a large amount of money will change hands, whichever side gains the victory. The champions of Pitts burgh have tested their strength in many Instan ces already, and win or loose they are bound to do their utmost, in which case defeat is most to impossible. The first match is to _come off 'to morrow. Barn Burnt.-..A barn caught fire on Friday morning at the foot of Nicholson falls, belong. tng to Capt. James Connor. The entire build ing was destroyed together with all tts contents. All the fall crops was columned except the corn and potatoes, two mulch Cows and two draught horses were burnt to deatn. The damage sustain ed is said to amount to $3,000. It appears iron the many instances in which barns and stables have been struck by lighting during thunder storms that they are capable of attracting elec tricity more powerfully than dwelling houses, trees &c for which reason we would consider it very dangerous to live In their vicinity at least during a thunder storm. New Di flitary.Conapany.—The tly-mnas• tic association of Pittsburg held a meeting on Saturday evening for the purpose of filling the company which they had so brilliantly inaug urated. The meeting was quite enthusiastic in favor of completing the organization, and several of them willingly enrolled their names. We hare not ascertained whether the necessary number have yet joined the company, but 'if they have not done so as yet, we are certain that they will be prompt in remedying the deficiency as a corn - mencement under such brilliant auspice* must be attended with the desired success. _ . The 163 d Regiment —This regiment ar rived here at a late hour last night on their way to Cleveland, Ohio. They partook of the re freshments which were held in readiness for them by the Subslatenee Committee. and at an early huur resumed their journey.
