But the veil rever,,e of this .has been lho truth. We have 'been as- Eiuted over and over again, for the past . 44441 i 'Months, that the rebellion was tottering and in the throes of dissolution. The rebel capital _was about to be re tijpNp entire state - of Virginia Discontent was spreading 40 1 Vigtiong the southern masses, and • a. ilott4 other indications were pro- ' dncedy Administration organs, to sat isfykl.he. people that our troubles were nearly over. To render these assur ances the more impressive, the President ordered several days of thanksgiving, - in order to be especially thankful for the approach of speedy peace. But while Contemplating the blessings of the prom ised peace; which was.to shed its benign influence throughout the land, the nation is petrified by'another call for half a million of fresh men. Nor is this call, as our astute neighbor of the Gazette, in timates, intended to scare the rebels into sublission. That farce is too stale. It is made because orinformation received to the effect that the rebels are preparing fora spring campaign, yet unparalleled trig history of this rebellion. Already, the country has furnished for the field 1,700,000 men; and it is now called upon for' 500,000 more, because of fear of southern. invasion. In the face of this . ..diMger what are Congress and the Also Won fanatics throughout the country doing? Instead of arousing a feeling of tmartirnity ambng the people, in order to save the Union, they are voting for and justifying a war not for the Union 1)111 for emancipation. It is now evident, if the rebels be so strong as Mr. LiNcot.N . likitiltra them, that those at the head c,t out, affairs are utterly unable to control them. •- . WHAT DOES IT MEAN ? . „ . Vto Tiarriaburg Telegraph pays: JAME.. P. r44lt, Ottor of the Pittsburgh Past, who was ijairveytir General of Penney I manta by t he . 6.43 o itrats One year ago, has some to the conclu sion:OM the only way to establish permanent peace In this country is to abolish shivery. VA perceive this little paragraph, from the .Harrisbing Telegraph copied into several. Abolition organs; our business in alluding to it is to inform The Telegraph that. it has not told the truth. 'file edi tor of the Past never did entertain such an opinion as that, to which he is said to have given expression. Our impression is uow precisely what it was at the commencement of the re bellion, and that is that tilt) Abolitionists will prolong the war for the destruction Of slavery, regardless of the restoration of the Union. Should the people keep them in power, there will, of course, he no peace . until slavery is abolished. But even if the people of the South to-day wero-Ao agree to abolish - their slave sys tem, the Abolitionists would not agree to it unless the abolition of it was done in pursuance of Abolition dictation.
