If the Administration and he court or
gans would but act lioneFitly towards the
people, and give their,"Worst of thoughts
tike wUrtit. of words," the masses would
sustain -them with alacrity hi every
measure intended to put down the re
bellion. But the veil rever,,e of this
.has been lho truth. We have 'been as-
Eiuted over and over again, for the past .
44441 i 'Months, that the rebellion was
tottering and in the throes of dissolution.
The rebel capital _was about to be re
tijpNp entire state - of Virginia
Discontent was spreading
40 1 Vigtiong the southern masses, and •
a. ilott4 other indications were pro- '
dncedy Administration organs, to sat
isfykl.he. people that our troubles were
nearly over. To render these assur
ances the more impressive, the President
ordered several days of thanksgiving, - in
order to be especially thankful for the
approach of speedy peace. But while
Contemplating the blessings of the prom
ised peace; which was.to shed its benign
influence throughout the land, the nation
is petrified by'another call for half a
million of fresh men. Nor is this call,
as our astute neighbor of the Gazette, in
timates, intended to scare the rebels into
sublission. That farce is too stale. It
is made because orinformation received
to the effect that the rebels are preparing
fora spring campaign, yet unparalleled
trig history of this rebellion. Already,
the country has furnished for the field
1,700,000 men; and it is now called upon
for' 500,000 more, because of fear of
southern. invasion. In the face of this
. ..diMger what are Congress and the Also
Won fanatics throughout the country
doing? Instead of arousing a feeling of
tmartirnity ambng the people, in order to
save the Union, they are voting for and
justifying a war not for the Union 1)111
for emancipation. It is now evident, if
the rebels be so strong as Mr. LiNcot.N .
likitiltra them, that those at the head c,t
out, affairs are utterly unable to control
them. •-

peace In this country is to abolish shivery.
VA perceive this little paragraph, from
the .Harrisbing Telegraph copied into
several. Abolition organs; our business in
alluding to it is to inform The Telegraph
that. it has not told the truth. 'file edi
tor of the Past never did entertain such
an opinion as that, to which he is said
to have given expression.
Our impression is uow precisely what
it was at the commencement of the re
bellion, and that is that tilt) Abolitionists
will prolong the war for the destruction
Of slavery, regardless of the restoration
of the Union. Should the people keep
them in power, there will, of course, he
no peace . until slavery is abolished. But
even if the people of the South to-day
wero-Ao agree to abolish - their slave sys
tem, the Abolitionists would not agree
to it unless the abolition of it was done
in pursuance of Abolition dictation. The
alallliolders of Missouri ass e mbled in

News From The South
Fron the Atlhnta 0-oofederfwv.
Accounts from Dalton represent that
the arrival of General Johnston has had
a cheering influence upon the troops.
All remains quiet with the advance guard
of General ('laiburne near . Tunnel Hill.
We hear of skirmishing on Lungstreet's
line, but the connection with that Depart
ment is so round-about, that we gt.t no
definite intelligence or details. We are
satisfied that the troops are not going in
to winter quarters. From the region of
the Tennessee river, accounts of ',mall
cavalry table represent that much pro
duce and forage are being collected. The
citizens of Tennessee are making every
effort to assist our cavalry. Bacon
freely sold at five cents in Confederate
currency. Gold can he bought front
eight to ten for one. Roddy commands
a line of tnounted picketts, which patrol
a large extent of country.
We learn that the gallant and dashing
Col. G. G. Morrison. of the First Georgia
Cavalry after being cut off from his com
mand by the Yankee raiders, was forced
to run the gauntlet of the enemy's pick
ets between Knxoville and Dalton. lle
succeeded in escaping these dangers to be
taken captive by the accomplished Mrs
Hattie Berrie, of Morgan County, Ga.,
who placed the hymenial yoke upon him
on the 21st instant, and now holds hint
in durance, beyond the hope of parole or
exchange. Thus our many friends are
passing away.
Our friend of the Memphis PreAs. M.
C. Gallaway, Esq., has just returned
from West Tennessee, and informs the
editors of the Memphis Appeal that "on
the trith instant Major Strange, of Gen
neral Forrest's staff, went into Memphis
under a flag of truce, with a letter from
Genneral Forrest, setting forth the facts
in the case of Captain Gurley, stating
that he was a regular Confederate soldier,
belonging to his command, and threaten
ing retaliation in the event of Gurley's
execution. He also informed General
Hurlbut that in future he would hang
every man detected in burning the res
idences and property of non-combatants,
exhorting that officer to conduct the war
on principles of civilization and hu
manity.
OPERATIONS ON THE PENINSULA.
Prom the Richmond Whig.
A party of oavalry made a dash upon
our pickets near New Kent Court House,
about daylight Wednesday morning.
Our pieket r s were driven in, and gave
the enemy a few shots, after which the
latter immediately returned. They were
propably on a reconnoitering expedition.
It was reported that a body of Yankees
was at the White House on 'Wednesday,
in consequence of which the Yor,l River
train was turned back to Richmond, and
did not go to the terminus as usual.
No More Whisky.—on account of
the scarcity of grain, the large quantity
required for the subsistence of the armies,
the difficulties of transportation from re
mote States, and the factitious value giv
en to it by the manufacturers of whisky,
kienenil Foster has prohibited the further
distilation of grain within the limits of
his department in Tennessee.
