I The Democratic city Convention met in I the District Court room yesterday at eleven |o clock, end was called to order by. John I QninD, of the 3d ward, taking the|chair. Charles Barnett moved that the conven tion take a recess until half past one o’clock, in order to give time for all the delegates to be present. Mr, Coßgrave moved to amend the mo tion of Mr. Barnett, that the convention proceed to call the roll of the different wards, with a view to effect a permanent organization. After some discussion among the dele* gates, the amendment cf Mr. Coegrave was lost, and the motion to adjourn until half-past one o’clock prevailed. AFTERNOON SESSION. At the appointed hour the convention re assembled, Mr. Qoinn in the chair. Edgar of the 8d ward and Jamc3 Herdman. of tee 6d ward, were nominated. Mr. O'Connor moved that the vote be taken by wards, each delegation instruct ing one of its members to cast its vote. Mr. Barnett opposed the motion of Mr. O'Connor, and moved that the names of the delegates be called by wards, and let them vote for whom they choose. Car ried The names of Messrs. Edgar and Herd man were withdrawn, and the convention proceeded to ballot, with the following result: Joseph K, Hunter „. is James D, Vein or 15 Mr. Hunter having a majority of the votes cast, was declared the candidate of the party for Mayor, and his nomination afterwards made unanimous amid lond cheers and enthusiastic applause. William M. Edgar, of the 3d ward, was nominated for Controller by acclamation. Francis Felix of the sth ward, was nomi nated, by aeclamatiop, for city Treasurer. Mr O'Connor, of the 3d ward, offered the following resolution,. which was adopted : Resolved, Thatau Executive Committee, to consist of two persons from each ward, bo appointed by the chairman of this con vention, the members of said committe to appoint a committee of five in their re spective wards, who shall make all neces sary rules for the furtherance of the Democratic cause in the city of Pittsburgh. Mr. Cosgrave, of the 2d ward, offered the following resolution : Resolved, That this convention meets to nominate city officers, and that it is loyal to the Constitution and true to the Union, and recommed the nominees as such. Mr. Lynn, of the 6th ward, opposed the resolution, on the ground that the Demo cratic party Was loyal, and needed no reeo lotions to prove the fact. Mr. Buff.D, of the first ward, was in fa cor of the resolution. He was a loyal Democrat, and desired a'l the world to know it. Mr. Alexander, of the Bth ward, oppo sed the rsßolntion. He allowed no man to question his loyalty, nor that of the par ty to which he belonged. After some further good natnred re marks by various delegates, Mr. M’Ginn, of the Ist ward, offered the following sub stitute for the resolution of Mr. Cosgrave, which was adopted : Resolved, ThatthisisaDemocralicCon vention, and that we, the members thereof will uphold the pure doctrines of Democ racy at all times and under all circumstan ces, On motion, the convention adjourned Meeting of Councils.—Councils met last evening, but want of space prevents ns more than noticing the fact. The Grand Jury was sworn in, and received an elab orate charge from Judge Stowe, which was listened to throughout with marked attention. His honor commenced by en- A nto a hiotor y the manner iu which Grand Juries came to be instituted aud detailing at length thd functions wbicn they were expected to discharge. He explained their duties in the clearest possible manner, alluding in pointed terns to those offences against the law of which they were expected to take cogni zance, and showing the way in whioh the offenders might be reached. Among other things which he thongbt. fitting subjects tor inquiry, he spoke of the practice of permitting locomotives to stand on the public streets, and of running trains at an immoderate speed through the city—aj practice fraught with danger to human its, and as such clearly in violation of law. this matter he thought a Droper subject for inquiry, and if the jury'fonnd that the low had been violated it was their I dnty to present the guilty parties. His remarks we e altogether exceedingly sauna aud practical, and we have no dcubt whatever bnt that they will be pro ductive of the very best offsets.
