The Rebels all Across the Rapidan, FROM THE SOUTH. Rebel Account of the REBEL PLOT TO ATTACK JOHN Message of the Governor of Missouri Tile Situation in Tennessee NEW I oRg., Novamber 12.—A special to the Times dated 1i ashington 11th says It is positively ascertained that the whole rebel infantry force crossed the Rapidan on Sunday last. The only force left on this side are reccnnoitering bands of Stuart's cavalry, covering the rebel front on the south bank of the Rapidan river, which they are fortifying with care. The intentions of the rebels to rendez vous this winter between the Rappahan nock and the Rapidan are established by the fact that from Brandy Station to the Rapidan, log hate, capable of accommo• dating 50,000 men, have been erected. Our advance of Sautrday effected one of its objects in the preservation of 24 miles of road and telegraph, between the Rappahannock and Rapidan. Both are in perfect working order. The railroad bridge across the Rappahannock will be done next Monday. Lee's army at Gordonsville, exclusive of cavalry, does not much exceed thirty thousand men. Our cavalry, in force, are already far ss.,uth of the Rapidan, re connoitering the enemy's position. Two' divisions of cavalry from Lee's army were recently sent to East Tennessee. Guar• rillas swarm about our camps. To go beyond our pickets is death, as we daily lose officers, men and mules. Within a no nit, shout 70 wagons. 500 mules, 100 soldiers and commissioned officers have been captured. The forces sent to operate against Burn stje in East Tennessee have been recal led, and will form a Junction with the main army at Charlottesville , or Gdrdons vile. This will depend entirely upon the rapidity of Meade' el movements. BrFFALO, November Lf. —To the Mayor of Buffalo The British Minister, Lord Lyons, has to night officially notified the Government, that from telegraphic in or mation received from ;he Governer Gen eral of Canada, there is reason to believe that a plot is on foot by persons who have found an asylum in C'anada. to invade the i-oates and destroy the city of Bu!- fait). That they propose to take posses HlOll of some steamboats on Lake Erie, to Burris,- hoh.,rion's Island, and set free the prisoners of war confined there, and proceed with them to Buffalo. This Gov ernment will employ all the means in its power to suppress any hostile attack from Canada, but as other towns:and cities t n the Lake shore are exposed to the same danger, it is deemed proper to comment cate this intelligence to you , in order that any precaution which the circumstances of the case permit may be taken. The Governor Geoeral suggests that steam boats or other vessels giving CHUM` for Stl9plCloll by the number or character of persons on board, shall he arrested. You will please acknowledv ins receipt rt this telegram. aid communicate to this department any int,.roia, ton you may now or hereafter obtain. E. M STANTON . , Secretary of War. N EW:L - ORK , Nov 21.—A Washington orre:-pondence says: A pr:ate note from the trout states that it was believed the ri bele were in considerable force south of Culpepper and thisiside of the Rapidan. It now looks as if Lee was matoeuvering for some position which the writer did r o regard at all impossible unless the enemy suddenly crossed the Rapidan with all his force, giving confirmation of the previous belief of his weakness. It will be recol lected that in Lee's official report of his former advance, be selected the ground he now holds to attack Meade. He therefore has ao opportunity to wake good his words. Our army cannot advance very rapidly, owing to the want of a rail road bridge at the Rappahannock, yet a few more days will suffice to see if a change in the n,tuation develope a battle. Gen. Meade is very active is disposing of his corps to etrategetical points . Mr. Jno. Coilson, jr., whose arrest at Chicago on a charge of having forged the name of Deputy Collector, B. F. Mud gett to a note for $lOOO, was noticed about ten days ago, has been honorably dis charged, on examination, before Justice Dowling, having shown his entire inno cence. CINCINNATI, November 12 —Considers ble excitement prevails in the Northern part of this State in consequence of an anticipated attack upon Johnson's Island by an expedition of armed steamers, fitted out for that purpose in Canada. The ts. so tar as ascertained, are as follows: —Government officers have received in formation upon what is considered an questionably reliable authority, that two er more armed Yo -,els have been fitted out by the rebels and rebel allies in Canada to attack Johnson Island in San dusky Bay and release the rebel prisoners confined there, numbering some two tlicus.and. This accomplished, they intend with the aid of the released prisoners, to attack eidi destroy if possible, Sandusky, Buffalo, and ocher prominent cities on the shore of Lake Erie. Active and energetic precautionary measures have heen taken by the Gov ernrnent to render dohusonls Island se• cure against au attack should one be made. Troops and batteries have been ordered tbtr,• from several points of this State yesterday and to day. PIT TS B I - 7W H.
