A general attendance is regar sted, as a ttior oughinvestigation of the frauda in guns tion will be instituted Sleeting of Return Judges , The Return Judges for Allegheny county met in the District Court room at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, and organized by appointing Wm. Owens, jr., Chairman, and Thos. Steele and James L. Suther land Secretaries. After the officers had been duly qualified, a motion was made, and carted, that the townships be called first in order. The Board then proceeded to count the returns, which we give be low. The late hour at which the opening and reading the returns from the various wards, boroughs and townships was ac• complithed, rendered it impossible to procure the footings up of the votes cast for the different officers. For Governor however, we give the result as follows • Andrew G. Curtin George W. Woodward Curtin's Majority. 7,661. The entire Republican ticket is elected by about the same majority, with the ex ception of Jno H. Stewart for Sheriff— Mr. Blackmore running considerably ahead of the ticket for this offioe. NEW YORK, October 16.-:-The Times' correspondence from the army of the Po tomac, dated the 15th, says : The' enemy made two desperate and unsucces s f u l at. tempts to•day to whip this army in detail, and destroy our trains, but in both most signally failed. Just at daybreak, between Catlett's station and a barn, Gene. Stuart and A. P. Hill made a simultaneous at• tack upon Gen. Gregg's cavalry force and the 2d army corps. Almost the first inti mation given of their presence was the opening of their batteries upon tho 2d corps, Our troops were speedily in posi• tion. and the enemy were repulsed with considerable loss. Late in the afternoon General Hill made another dash to cut off the second corps. He first attacked the rear of the sth cavalry, killing three of the Pennsyl vania Reserves, and wounding fifteen or twenty more. When the head of the sec- ond corps had reached Kettle Run, near Bristow's, Hill made a terrible'onslanght on both corps. The second corps - was on the east side of the railroad track and used_the road embankment at several I points for breastworks, with decided ad vantage. _ The enemy charged at one time up to the embankme - i - i - rwhen a portion of the Second Corps charged in turn, capturing 700 or 800 prisoners and one batteriy. Several charges were made, and each time the enemy .-tis forced back with great slaughter, leaving their killed and wounded in our hands. A rapid artillery fire was kept up on both sides until long after dark, when the enemy gave up and retired. I have not been able to obtain a full list of oar kil led and wounded. but it is not large. Capt. Ball, of the 3d Minn., was wounded in three places, and under the most ag gravating circumstances. When the ene my charged up to the railroad, and find ing themselves in a dangerous place, they waved their hands in token of surrender. At this instant t. apt. Ball sprang upon the embankineal, and a volley was fired at him, doe shots taking effect. The Min nesotiatis returned the fire, and many rebels suffered death in retaliation for this act of treachery. Oar trains are all safe. There was tome artillery practice this morning near the Rappahannock Station, but without much damage. The let Maine cavalry, Colonel Smith, which was cut cff on Mon day night near Jeffersou, creased the Rap pahauneck, and reached Brit tow Station on fnesday night. The regiment escaped with a loss of a squad of men sent to communicate with Gen. Gregg, about twenty in all. Our army behaved hand somely. The following is an additional ii, .t rf casualties : — killed—Col. James E. Mut ton, 62d N. Y., commanding 3d brigade, 2d division, 2d corps. Wounded—rapt. S. N. Smith, 7th Michigan, Inspector General of General Webh's staff ; Capt Fraul: Weesils, Judge Advocate, 2d divia ion, '2.1 corps : Copt. Thomas Sinclair, Ist Minn , slightly ; Lieut. J. Degray, Ist Minn., slightly; 10th Minnesota, one kil led and twelve wounded ' • Ist Minnesota, one killed, none wounded, and one min sing ; 82d New York, seven killed and eighteen wounded All of the above were in the lot Brigade, 2cl division. The casualties in the 3d Brigade, 3d Division, were 46 killed, 85 wounded and 25 missing. In the 4th Brigade, 3d divis ion, the loss was 14 killed wounded and missing. Many of the latter ere expected to return. ANTHONY MEYER PITTSBURGH. CINCINNATI, Oct. 6 . — Secretary Che spoke to a large crowd at Columbus last night. He congratulated the people over their victory, and spoke of the good effect it would have, not only in this country, but in Europe. It would strengthen the hands of the President and Cabinet, and would send joy to the hearts of our army. If you had given ten thousand majority only, it would not have suffered, but your grand one hundred thousand has done the business. He rehearsed the history of his leaving Ohio, three years since, to at tend the Peace Congress, the policy he advocated and the result, and his transfer from the - etiate, by President Lincoln, to his Cabinet. Re also went into a history of his financial scheme, reterred to his three years' absence feelingly, and thank. ed bie audience for their kind welcome to Ohio. He also complimented Governors Dennison and Tod for their fidelity and zeal in managing the affairs of the State. Mr. Chase loft Columbus this morning tor Washington.
