Events fraught with the most momentous questions, . in volving no less a consideration than our liberties, are threatening to overwhelm us at this moment. For two years and a half a most wicked and fiendish war has been waged against the Confederate States of America, which war has receiv ed its chief support from this country, iis violation of every law, human and divine, the Queen's proclamation, and againet the dearest interests of this try Strange and incomprehensible 'as coun it may seen., the Federal States, our old arch enemy, without the 'slightest hindrance Or, objection from the English Government has received every appliance of war, even to Greek fite, from us. During this very period a neutralizing neutrality has beat practiced with impunity, our frienda, natural allies, and kinsmen have beea slandered, abused, and libeled beyond any civilized peopl e on earth, insult added to injury, and the foulest duplicity and partiality, shielded and armor-plat•-ti I with the cry.of neutrality, in oppo s i tion to I the sympathies of all true hearted Chris tians, have been practiced against them. When urged to do justice to the South the reply has always been neutrality. while, at the same time, the Government of the Federal states has really been aided that every possible way. We do not know that there has been an understanding betweeia the Cabinet of England and Washington, land should be loth to believe it, and think, on the contrary, that the voice and , true feeling of the country have only to be firmly; made known in order to induce a different course ; but we do know that their actions have to a great degree beeri harmonious. with regard to the Confedtr• ate States, both agreeing to the inefficient blockade, and therefore both opposed to any supplies, goi ng over from this :.!puntrly —both opposed to recognition, and seerd ingly both agreed in allowing the capture of English vessels. even when bound to a neutral port. The Yankees have blockaded the Southern ports at a great expense, but Englandat a much greater, sacrificing her commercial interests to a tear of war with the North. The so-called neutrality .wPracticed against the South has been their enn,,.........,_a-......--,.......•....,......,-:. of 100,000 men to aid the Noe - Ferri States' to subjugate and starve out their Southern brethren. Bow strange and inexplicable has been our conduct towards the combat- ants. The Confederate States have de clared their ports open to us, and their readiness to exchange cot ton for mane filatures, and in every case shown a con tinued desire for the most cordial relatiotia with us, which hitherto welave refused. The Federal'Government, on the contrary, has threatened, menaced, and insulted ne almost continually ; and openly declared that as soot' as the South be conquered .they would declare war with us and take Canada. President Jefferson Davis has stretched out the right of friendship to las with olive branch, and we have given a serpent. President Lincoln has approach ed us in a most hostilt - , and warlike man ner, with a drawn sword in one hand, and an ignited thunderbolt, charged with Greek fire, in the other ; yet we give this blood-thirsty tyrant the cordial hand Of fellowship, and maintain the most friendly relations with him in his ignominous crq- Bade of fire and sword on this fairest por tion of the earth. The sooner that sup port is withdrawn from the Washingtob Government, and the independence of the Confederate States of America recognized by us, the better for England's future prosperity, happiness, and character. Let us, therefore, co-operate in the common interests of humanity and jastice in pro curing the recognition of a brave and suf fering people. We are morally bound to finally decide what position we will occupy in regard to the great American war. From fear of Offence to the North, we hate acted as if the South ought not to be 'con sidered as having a right to existence; nay, we have, during this entire unp4-.1 cr;dented struggle, given succor and sup-. port to the North, and remain her friendly ally. The time has arrived when we must i decide whether in oar opinion the North should blot out the Smith or not, or whether the South ought to have her inde pendence. The "London Confederate States Aid Association" firmly believe that a large majority of the freemen of Ithis great nation are anxious to grasp the lion-hearted South in her arms and wel -1 come her into the family of nations. If the high character, bravery, honor, and heroic defence of their country entitle [ men to be free, then surely they merit our consideration. Who will be the first to welcome them to the honors so richly merited. We invite all those that are in favor of the recognition of the "Confed erate States of America." to unite with us in adopting the best means to accomplisL that end. The importance of concert of action among the friends of this movement is earnestly solicited by the "London Con federate Aid Association," who are anxious to communicate with other associations, clubs and friends-as to the best means of a general demonstratioh throughout the em pire. The New York Independent hits off modern literature in the following happy manner It is fortunate for us that, in the age of universal printing and omnivorous read ing, books of travel have been supplied to us in such fascinating variety, to coun teract the influence of sentimental and subjective romance. We acknowledge readily the exceeding ability which the pure fiction of the time exhibits; but we turn with pain and disgust fromits minute morbid anatomy, from its sedulous sneers at the imperfection and weakneas of our nature, from its constant ,search for a mean motive when a manly one would be natural, from its feierielf delineations of man's falsitY : tb - Woman, and of woman's falsitylmhersalf.- To go from any of the ter, this, period to,those . of Sir Wal. ter Sc ot t, is like leaving , the: loithsonie atmosphere of the .- laxarzficnissy - and the fiat nt its eougrrgated "leperP, to face the bleesed air of ibe hill tops, and to wiz 3 upon the 'mingling glories of the heavens and, ttie earth. _ Comf artable-Coolness of John Bull. I A letter from London says: There is very little expectation here that therer will be a war with America; . but there is,st very general opinion and a 'grit ificatioirexpreeeed which is still more _general, :that there is a direcf, proepect of a War 'between the United States and Franca. -In such a struggle the feeling here will,be almost as it was with the old woman' when her haeband and his ill tempered dog had a fight : ehe cared not which whipped, provided they nearly kill ed each other. nurr TE.E.EB, &0.,, 4c.
