It is vouohed for by numbers of my comrades, some of whose names aw appended, and who were fully cognizant of all tho circumstances of my case. I am, and have been for-the last four years, a member of Gher man 8 celebrated battery. Under the immediate i command of Capt, E B.Ajres. Through the ex posure attendant upon my arduous duties, Iwa attacked in November last with inflamation of: the lungs, and was Jor seventy two days in the i hospital. This was followed by groat debility, heightens by an attack of dysentery. I was then removed from the White House and sent to this’ city on board the steamer ‘‘State of \ls ino,” from ' which I landed on the 28th of June. Since that : time IJwTft been about as low as any-oie could! be and stall retain a spark ofvitality; For a week ; or more I wasc Caroc iy able to swadowanything,’ and if I did force a morsel dowa, it was irnmedi- : atety thrown up again. Pugh’s Excoriation of Tod Al th e great Democratic' mass meeting at Cadiz, Ohio, on the 31st of August, Hon George E. P ag h, the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, com mepced his speech as follow: Hr. Pagh began by saying that he had supposed every man in the State was aware of the circumstances in which he had been nominated a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor, and the motives which impelled him to accept the nomination. But there was one man in the State so lost to decency and truth as to charge him with improper motives in his conduct, and that man was David Tod Who, having lost the confidence of the Democracy, got an office by selling out to the enemy, and who has now arrived at that condition that he is despised by oth parties. The Democracy oot tir^-d vLrs 7-’ afWr Beryin « t wo Se h r f Ab0 i llt ' o^ 18U hftve throwa him aside. [Laughter.] And this renegade that t to e h tni t ldl f ty e the audacity, to suppose ! that to be elected to an office for sixty ! days which paid three dollars a dav—to I preside oyer the Senate oi Ohio, and lb, I ten. to speeches without even having the l privilege of making a speech myself ! dnced me to leave home and my own al fj™ d m aTel d \ y and u'l through Ohio, exhorting the pro;.!- •„ I elect the Democratic ticket. And so when this crisis came f d ** -° ld pa^ be carried lU ' vhich co;lld "<>t oe earned by the exiled candidate for Governor, I could not refuse. I would have avoided ,t if I could have done so honorably; but I could not, and T aecept offire 6 f °r the least important office on the[ticket, as cheerfully as if states inL n eBid6!lcy - of lhe lT “ iled be th ? .!Democratic ticket could 1 be elected without electing me—if ne candidate for Governor could return and make the canvass for himself, it would assuredly please me better; bnt I know that cannot be, and I ask yon to vote foT me to promote the success of the Demo ratlCp ri nclples . tCheerB for p h _-j_ I should not notice Tod but for the the impertinent remarks he made about me which the Abolitionists have been at pains to circulate to-day. He says—“ Why !--i me tel!you, that this man, Pugh, wifhin a year agreed with the Union narty as to the prosecution of the war. 1 • if Tod m-a S he call, the Uinon party ij any offier respect, or in in nr-sp cuting it for the emancipation 0 f negroes and confiscation, then he states what ” , e ', He says : “This man who is going aem^6Si c | ID « r[ fe la yallandig_ham and .“within one short year ”riip~ fnV'T conimißsioQ to raise a regiment.’* THat is a falsehood. 1 1 me Ibntthe draftwaalo eomn ! I off last year—there were no three hundred ! dollar exemptions at that time—some of I were anxious that Cir.ein- I nati should have another regiment, and Borne Abolition paper came out declaring that the command ought to be offered to me, because X happened to have had some experience as a Boldier in the Mexican I war. Well, they did offer me the com mand of a regiment, and I told them J would accept it only on condition that the enlisted men should have the privilege of electing their own officers, and that the men whom they elected should be com- I missioned. . The only communication I lever had with Tod on the subject was to Iwhoi-lier he would commission officers elected by the men. But betore the regiment was raised martial law was proclaimed, the people were sent across the river into Kentucky to defend Cineiti- I nati, and I went with them. Then came I Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, J since which time I have had no hope of a I successful prosecution of tho War with a I view to the restoration of the Union. I don’t quite understand what Tod means by his allusion. It seems wholly impertinent except in one sense, and that I would be that I had asked him for a com mission as a personal favor, and that he had refused it, and therefore I had inter eated myself for the nomination and elec tion of Mr. Vallandigham. If Tod means that —if he intends any imputation ol that character—l denounce him as a base, will ful and malicious liar. And it ha has any Abolition friend present, let that friend tell him I said bo. Widely as I differ from Mr. Brough and Colonel Anderson, and | as much as I ahhor the doctrines that they sustain, I am happy to acknowledge that they have- conducted the campaign with the decency.aud courtesy Uecomjng gentle men ; bat as for Tod, he takes'irnphn him self to carry all the filth of the campaign. I leave him with these remarks. He is beneath the contempt of any honest man. [Cheers.]- I am ashamed to be under the necessity of mentioning his name. | Pro longed cheering ] Among the Mexican prisoners brought to France by the transport Rhone, is a yonng Indian woman, only twenty-three years of age, who was Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment of Zacatecas, and who, in the course o f seven years, rose step by step from the rants by her courage ana talents. Shalollowed her hnsband to the army, and was Boon promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant for her distinguish ed bravery. The death of her husband, killed in action, afforded her an oppor tunity of avenging ihim and of rising an other step. The Fr=nch defeatfatGuada lnpe on the 6th ot May, J 862, obfained for her the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, sec ood.in command of a regiment, in which position she again greatly distinguished herself during the Biege ot Puebla. This singular woman handles the sword like a first rate fencing master, and she made herself not only respected but feared by the soldiers, who looked upon her as a supernatural being. After Ortega sur rendered at discretion at Puebla, she was brought toi V era Cruz, and was lodged on board the Rhone until that vessel sailed tor France. Her order of embarkation mentions ber rank and gives her a right to sit at the held officers table. She is said to be of agreeable personal appearance although, as might be expected, rather more masculine in her ways than becomes her sex.
