WTI MID ZiBIU6UBBODU • James Hamill. The last number of the New York per comes to us embellished with whist pgrports to be a portrait of Jimmy Hamill, but & more villainous caricature could not 41ave been gotten up. It was bad enough for the New Yorkers to have hooted at him, and shown him all the unfairness that they were capable of, but to stick such a rang in their sporting paper, and then try to pass it off as James Hamill, is espying the jokp a. little toe far. If we mistake not, that same cut has been in the Clipper before, representing some prize fighter. James 'gamin is a good looking young man, while' the cut represents the contrary. When Hamill defeated Ward. two or three sticks full of matter was suf ficient notice of the contest; now, by meanness and unfairnap, Hamill is beaten a few lengths, and the astute editors of all the leading papers of' New York glorify their man in from two to three column - artielei: Let Hamill and Ward meet on other'ground, when they can both have an equal chance, and Hamill will play around him, and beat him with the most perfect ease. If Ward wishes - to wear the name of champion with ease and grace, he must win it in a different manner to that sahib. iced in this last race. [Communication.) The Draft in the First Ward Allegheny. Messes. EDITORS : I notice that by the draft in this ward that it has furnisheed ohe man only in response to the draft.— . Accident Irons Fast Driving. Yesterday a little after 1 o'clock, a man furiously driving a coach to which was attached a span of grey horses, down St. Clair street, ran against a lady by the name of Mrs. Myers, at the crossing of Penn and S. Clair'knocking her down, and injuring the back of her head. She was picked up and carried into Super's drag store, when after having become somewhat restored she was taken to the St. Clair Hotel, where she yet remains. Her husband was killed some five months ago at Braddock's Field by being ran over by the cars. The man who was the cause, of the accident, as soon as the hors es were disentangled froth the lady's dress, dravi rapidly over to Allegheny. He should be arrested and made to suffer for his carelessness. An Exciting-Chase. Yesterday evening two members of the PiovOst Guard espied a young man whom they recognised as a deserter, driving the wagon spf Fackiner lc Irwin up Fifth street, above Smithfield. One of them sprang intitheVagan to make the arrest, but the yointig . Oen anticipating his movements, sprang out and dashed into Cherry alley, back.6Vitte Cathedial. Cititti.ssioN, July 19. The Chippewa has gained great credit for going nearer than any of the other gunboats, and firing faster and making the beet shots, &c. Yesterday we went on the right of the wooden sides nest to the Monitors. The rebels gave us but very few shots, giving most of their at L.:mho:in to the Monitors, new lonsides and the batteries. The gunboats were at work from 8 a. m. till after 7 p. in. The iron clads engaged the rebels at little after 12 o'clock, but our work was play compared with the charge in the face of the fire from Fort Wagner and Fort Sumter. If the move had been made two or even one hour earlier than it was, Wag ner would have been ours at this present motnent. After they got in it was so dark (so those say who lived to get out asaih,) that rebels fireil on rebels, and union on union, Sumter killing as many rebels as i did our men ; our batteries killing as ma ny friends as foes. The carnage was aw; fill, for I cannot call it anything else. Oar loss was from 700 to 1,000 killed, wounded and missing. It is said that the Massachusetts 54th regiment led the van, and all but six offi sere were killed, wounded or taken pris oners- They fought very hard. Our men were in the fort something like two hours, and it was nothing but the confu sion and darkness, not being able to tell friend friend from foe, that obliged them to get out. Wagner is destined to be ours. It will be for Gilmore is not the man to give up. WASHINGTON July 29.—Commander om Henry A. Army of the - Potomac to be Kept on the Defensive: &L.. Llama/vs, July 28. • . , -,. Advic'es- frOni the-, front to-day—states that the greater portion of the rebel army has arrived befoNi - Culpepper on tEe road leading ;Iron'Thornton 's and Chester Gans, and is concentrating at that point. The Rapidan River will probably be the rebels' line of defense, torn while at least, thus prot2ctiug the Virginia Central Rail road. A retreat may go on even to Gor donsville Junction of the Richmond and Alexandria and Virginia- Central Rail. road. The Republican says that three daya ago the rebels look care to burn buildings erected by our Commissaries, Quarter masters, ftc., for array uses, while we were in possession of Aqui& Creek, and which were left standing when we evacuated that position. This proceeding signifies pretty clearly a reoccupation of that place by the two armies. Copies o" Southern journals of the 28J are at baud, while yesterday's Richmond papers are here.
