DAILY POST. Adjutant General Thornata 'lstegro Enlistment Farce. There have been some farces of the first water enacted during the progress of this war, but there have been none so utterly absurd and ridiculous—none so destitute of the slightest result—as the mission of Adjutant General Thomas for the 'enlist ment of negro soldiers in the Southwest. We have been amused at the venerable prattle of hisprinted record, and have la bored hard fo .. ascertain from it that he ev er procured the enlistment of a single ne gro soldier. It does not appear from his own words that he did, but we are chari• table enough to suppos e that he got a few,, for it could not well happen ottierwise.— He "organized" twenty regiments—that is, he, appointed white cfficers for that. number of regiments, all of whom are doubtless clamorous at the present mo ment for their pay. He gave them carte blanche to enlist their recruits from the African immigration to our lines, and' succeeded so well that there are new near ly privates enough to cook the cfficere v,ictuala. Without fear of contradiction, we as sert that Ajdutant General Thomas' rep resentatious regarding the enlistment of a large negro military force are simple bosh and nonsense. He cannot designate as his handiwork a single regiment ne eroes on the Mississippi river, and from Cairo to Vicksburg he cannot i3how Eve hundred able-bodied Wick soldiers. Knowing the facts, we speak thus...c.onfi dently. He failed to arouse the slightest disposition on the part of the negroes to become soldiers, and the majority oft hose who were armed and uniformed were tom pelled to it like cattle; and their military duties, both past and prospective,-..are confined to that species of drill which is beet developed in the use of the frying• pan and curry-comb. In no instance du ring his trip did this ancient apostle of negroism witness the actual enlistment' of a negro soldier, and we will confidently assert that so far as his personal knowl- edge of the fact goes, he is entirely igno rant of the existence of such a thing.— He gabbled and gossipped his way np and down ; the river, and may have deluded Law , ow'n' , retitle intellect into the-belief that he lett an army of negro soldiers be• hind-him, but he never was more mistaken in his lite. The complete failure which marked his attempt at the creation of a negro army was not more decisive, however. than the ruin which befell his other scheme for the cultivation of sixty plantations by runa way negroes. These plantations ' aban doned by their owners, were seized by his order and placed in the bands of North ern men, who stipulated to employ the negroes in the cultivation of cotton.— The result was such as anybody but a blessed old dotard - like the Aka - taut Geo. eral would 'have anticiiated. The pe groes refused to work, because they were not allowed to be whipped. They stole everything their new masters possessed, and' to tap the climax, the guerrillas swept the. experimental plantations so clean that, except in a very few instances. neither negroes nor planters have ever been heard, of since. It was a wise thing to set up such a mark for ransacking guer rillas. If it was to be the last piece of mischief they ever did, they would pay their 'particular respects to such an enter prise, If anything was needed to stamp the whole affair with utter and undeniable ab• snrdity, the action of General Grant in suspending the Adjutant General's much vaunted Commissioners from duty would furnish the convincing proof. It was ne cessary of course that so great a.work should beleft in the hands of a •‘Cominis• Edon." The entire uselessness either of the work or the Commission was probably the cause of. their : very peremptory sus pension. They are among the things that were, and with them passed .away the . 1-e -motest semblance of an excuse for longer perpetuating the farce of negro enlist ments in the Southwest. May we not hope•that we have 'heard the last of this extenSive and wide-spread lie 7—Chicago MRCS. Magnetism Extraordinary. The'Montretd Gazette is responsible for thiaiollowing-: We are informed that Mr. Deemarteau, St. Mary's street, was mag netized'on'Friday night last, without his knowledge, or permission, by a party un known, who bad entered his store to pur chase a glass of liquor. The latter then caused his victim to follow him to a shed near the furnaces in this locality, and next made him lie down on a heap of straw, when he quickly eased Desmarteau's pockets of all their pecuniary contents. Bat, unfortunately for the hero of the magnet, several of Desmartean's friends had also been attracted-.to the spilt,. though in this instance by curiosity or suspicion, when' they quitkly divined the objebt bf the stranger's scientific operation, on which they seized him, and forced him to disgorge his ill-gotten gains. Mr. Des nartean eoo4 regained; consciousness, when he - declared himself totally unaware of anything having occurred. The charm er,•however, was wise enough to beat a hasty retreat. Baby va. Y. Beraa, is fast being cleared away. The nest of the conspirators has been probed, and they now stand before the public in their hideous forms. When we saw the Tribune, Times, and Post, day after day, amidst the tumultuous and try lig scenes in this city, filled with bitter, acrimonious and bloodthirsty articles, we concluded that there was somesecret under and behind all the disturbances which was purposely bidden from the general public. Time has verified our suspicious. Facts that have come to light within the last few days conclusively prove that the incendi• ary course of the radical journals was prompted solely by a fixed determination to increase the extent of the riot and to force a collission between the State and national authorities. The latter point ac complished, it was to be followed with the declaration of Martial law, a military Gov. ernor, and all the appliances that this satanic radical committee, with Greeley, Raymond, Godwin & Co.. at its head, with its dozen or fifteen tails, could bring to bear to con•rol future elections in this city. They were foiled in their evil and bloody work by the tact and skill of Gen. erals Wool and Sandford, with the co-op eration of Governor Seymour.. The riot and suffering and the reign of terror were, however, extended by them at least three days by their nefarious work. Death from Being Overworked. The death of a young female, Mary Ann Walkley, in the service of a fashionable Vest End milliner, Madame Elise, a Frenchwoman, from exhaustion caused by overwork, and the breathing of impure air, has caused a sensation in London.— The facts attending the extinction of this young creature, as they' were developed at the inquiry before the Coroner, reveal a state of things about wineh the 'fine ladies who emplOy these Chart milliners can know nothing. Dr• Lankester has maae a report on The subject. "I found sixty ladies," he says, "working in two rooms. which contained 3,630 cubic feet of air, and this gives but little more than sixty feet of air to each individual." It has been remarked that, in a sanitary point of view, these rooms have even less air than the Black "Hole of Calcutta, into which though double the number of people were thrust, yet many of them died a horrible death in the course of a single night. The cartoon in Punch of July 11, rep resents Mr. Roebuck as a terrier at the Tuileries, fed by Napoleon with sugar plums oat of a bowl labelled "Humbug." The empress puts her hand on the shonl der.of the emperor, and deprecatingly re marks ; "Alt, moo cher Louis ! pray don't cram the poor little fellow any more ; it is positively cruel. DURING the riot in Troy, Morrissey, thi3 prize fighter, took part against the rioters. The, mob attacked the Troy House; and deinanded that the negro waiters should be given up to them. "Bet," says a re porter, "they were informed by Morrissey that the negroes had all left, but himself, and he was at their service, if they &si red." This Hibernicism closed the par ley. Green copperas dissolved in water will effectually concentrate and destroy the foulest smells, and if placed under a bed in hospitals and sick rooms will render the atmosphere free and pure. For butch• ere' stalls, fish markets, sinks, and wher ever there are offensive, putrid gasses. dissolved copperas sprinkled about, will, in a day or two, purify the atmosphere, and an application once a week will keep it sweet and healthy. The Smallest Vessel A paragraph quoted elswhere, from the Chicago Times, speaks of a Norwegian sloop a fifty-five tone, which has just ar rived there, as the smallest vessel which ever crossed the Atlantic. Perhaps so, as a regular vessel; but, if we are not mistaken, the voyage in question was made from a New England seaport in a ship's long boat, Borne half-century ago.—Boston Courier.
