Con trary to thelaws of Virginia, ballots were cast instead of.voting viva voce. in order to give the people at Smithfield an oppor tunity to show their attachment to the Union, two.ballot boxes were sent down to them in charge of Lieut. Col. Onder donk, commanding two hundred of the first New York mounted rifles and two howitzers. Suspecting that the enemy would he anxious to visit the polls, Cot. Onderdonk sent the boxes direct to Smithfield, in charge of a small squad, and proceeded with the remainder of his command to'' Windsor. Learning that the enemy in considerable force had left the .place but a short time betore he proceeded cautiously toward Isle of Wight, and when about three miles out came up with them. He sent his compliment? ire the shape of shell from hl6 howitzers, and they responded handsomely with a six•pounder. A short skirmish revealed one regiment ot infant ry, two pieces of artillery and some caval ry. Lient. Col. o.iderdonk, thinking it would be safe to look voters nearer Suf folk, slowly retired. The rebels attempt ed to surround him, and at one time were only 150 yards in his rear. He suddenly wheeled his command nbout, and fired a volley, which emptied twenty of their sad dles in quick time. Two prisoners and one horse was taken. It is thought it will be a long time before the election returns will come from Smithfield Lortsvitu, Dec. 2t3. —Morgan's com mand, about 3,000 cavalry, entered Glum- Row on Wednesday. Three companies of the l.fd Michigan cavalry opposed their entrance, but tell back on Munfordsville, having lost one Captain and two privates. The rebels lost two Captains, five privates and seven prisoners. The rebels were then reinforced and remained in posses 'ion of Glasgow on Thursday. Cole. Gray and Shank's attacked the rebels at Bearwalow, Hart county, - near Cave City, the rebels previously having damaged the Railroad near Glasgow Junetiol. At last EXCOUIItii the tederala drove off the rebels, killing one and taking sixteen prisoners, but sustaining no loss. The train of .ammunition cars which left hero this morning was tired into near Nolia and returned. No Nashville pas- Banger train left here this morning. The telegraphic communication between here cud Nashville Was interrupted this afternoon. NYORK, 26.--An into the frauds Dec. on the governmentinvestigation show that out of the sum of $1,600,000 which was paid in this city alone, from the spe•- Mal appropriation of $ 20 ,000,000, for re cruiting, organizing and drilling velum tiers, nearly one half has been paid on fraudulent accounts. Nearly a thousand, persons have been engaged in the matter, hut they are not, all criminally implicated. . _ ST. Louts, December 26.—The Halleck Guards left the city this morning for Gray's Summit, is county, on special duty. It is said they are ordered to that place to prevent troubles from negro insurrection, .as there was talk 'of such a movement beltig on foot in Frank lin county, but inquiries have failed to elicit any reliable foundation for such re ports. Thero.are but few negroes in the county; not enough to'get'up an insurrec tion on any considerable scale. New Railway Project. .. By the. last of this month the rails will be laid from - Tyrone, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, to Bellefonte, the capital (W I Centre county, an& the cars are already' running from Tyrone to Port Matilda: This work is on the' Tyrone and Lock !Haven railroad , which traverses the Bald Eagle Valley and connects the Pennsyl- Tanis Central railroad - at Tyrone with the Philadelphia and Erie at Lock Haven. ' -Bellefonte ,is about half the distance bo tween the two points. By the comple tion of thilf - work a direct road will be opened froth Pittsburgh to Elmira, Will. iamsport, Cattawissa, Easton, and all the North-western part of Pennsylvania.— ;The Alhany and Susquehanna Railrbad, which is now in the course of construction to Binghampton, on the New Fork and 1 1 Erie Railroad, willconnect Pittsburgh with Albany and Bosibn, via the Bald Eagle Valley line. Of this route the Williams ' port and Elmira line constitutes the essen tial part, and thus the reader will appre ciate the rumor which has recently claimed credence in - the Ne w York money market, to the effect that the Pennsylvania rail road was considering a proposition to leasethe Elmira Road. With that line in. its possession, the Pennsylvania Company would have a direct road from Pittsburgh to Albany and Boston, avoiding both Phil adelphia and New York 'Wes. iserAsimullitanttrxo # •-..4';1::.`0-41:-W.';11114314 rt: 41.1.46 411V4E_ -TSC.M.sgt ev - a • , • GREAT_ , N. • 19-ALTlSR,TAToNiitiOtsadit*li ed from NEW.:Y4IOC-iiiityMiPOOL. - 2 0 -- SATURDAY, January 3d, First Cain sllo4 o $155. each berth, according to,the a, se,a i lation or ae... commodatoin of the state:bouts having the same privilegm in the SaloOrts - aud in regard to mews and attendance.
