A very pleasant entertainment took place at Fort Sumter on Monday evening. About three o'clock . , Gene. Beauregard and Ripley, with a large number of invi ted guests, including many ladies and the commander of the French steamer Milan, now anchored in the harbor, reached the fort in a boat specially provided for the occasion. The battalion of regular artiil lery, constituting the garrison of the post, was then reviewed by General Beaure yard, and the superb precision of the men in every movement called forth universal admiration from the spectators. After some time spent in examining the interior arrangements of the great stronghold, the guests repaired to the officers' quarters, in the South face of the fort, and there be. took themselves to dancing. Excellent 1 music and abundant refreshments had been provided by the hospitable officers, and for hours these grim walls echoed with il the sound df me ritnent. At nine o'clock the company ,r -embarked, leaving the garrison to its wonted rest, with no sign of life upon the dark outline of the fortress save the sentinels pacing the bleak para pet in their lonely rounds. Paris and La Morgue. The river Seine is a charming stream. At Paris the dead men and woman, cats and dogs, are strained out, and exhibited at La Morgue, and thus the channel re• mains unobstructed. The water is of a sickly, greenish color, and, when boiled, imparts a pectilar flavor to coffee, of which large quantities-are drank by the natives, While you are drinking at the Cofe Mosair• an; think of these things, and if there are not sufficient, there will be next to you a ~Frenchtitan, who will smoke iq Amur ; Atop, ilia ;A upon theVtlit -t bslideClOn until you are content. The politest people . in the world have the ; filthiest habits. You will see a thous and one things in Paris every day, no one of which would be tolerated in a Yankee land ; but of these I will not speak, for' I have a more disagreeable topic to talk about The other evening I visited La Morgue, and: have been haunted ever since. La , Morgue is a long, IoW building, situated upon the North side of the river, not very far from the Louvre. If you fall orjump into the river, after you are lead you will be fished out and exposed here. The other day an American went to the Bois de Boulogne, deliberately took out watch and other valuabies, placed them upon the bank of the river and then, stand ing near the waterl cut his throat. He fell into the stream, and next morning an ar tist friend of his who had vielted La Mor gue every day for studies of the horrible; found him there and for once had enough ofthe horrible. When I visited this place thee iftsiati usual, a eroirclarohnd it, and it was some time before I could accom plish the object of my visit, bat finally ob tained admittance. There were two bodies exposed. One, a young female, with long black hair and fun round limbs and features.' Of course, Hood's sad, sweet lines came into my mind, and I repeated : "''ne more unfortunate. Rashly impaunate. Gone to her d rt eath." As soon as the bodies are recognized by friends, they are removed from public view. How long did this young maiden wait for her 'friends, and who came for her at last ? _ Was it a father, mother, or was it the faithless and perhaps repentont lover, who tearfully sought for and perhaps here' found the wreck he had made. I know not, for I did not linger long with the ri bald crowd, who- joked and laughed, as they looked at those faces .so calm and still, that would never smile again. • There wes a bad and stifled odor about the place and X eaciiped, as: speedily as possible to the open air. - Just beside the entrance a. booth was iiithitedifor . the sale of bon- bons;takes, &c„ and the business seems to be good. 'c.''Cr Jommonplaoe Woman. Heaven knows how many simple letters, trom simple-minded women,. have been kissed, cherished and wept over by men of far loftier intellect. Therefore it is no marvel that the childish epistle of Hope Amstead was read and re -read with linger ing and throbbing heart. It is a lesson worth learning by those young creatures who seek to allure by their accomplish ments, or to dazzle by their genius, that though he may admire, no man ever loves a woman for these things. He loves her for what is essentially distinct from, though not incompatible with them—her woman's nature and her woman's heart. This is why we so often see a man of high genius or intelluctual power pass by the Di e Staels and the Corines to take unto his bosom some way-side flower, who has nothing on earth to make her worthy of him, except that she is—what so few ofyour "female celebrities" are--a true woman. • Great Suffering . and Tenacity of Very extraordinary instances of suffer ing and tenacity of life are related by the Deseret News, of Nov. 29th. A company of emigrants was attacked by a band of Indians near City Rocks, Nevada, Sept. 11th, and of the fifteen men two were kill ed and sir wounded. • Messrs. Goodman and sharp, both severely wounded, were rescued after nine days suffering. They tasted no food for the nine days and nights except rose -buds; had lain. hidden in the willows on the banks of the stream each day and dragged themselveg along at night, and in this way had moved twenty miles from the scene of attack when found. Another of the party, named Comen, was found alive ten days after the attlibk. He was suffering from nine bullet wounds; and had lived entirely, on rosebuds. During this time the weather was so cold as to freeze ice half an inch thick, and cover the ground with white frosts. Al three of the sufferers are likely to recover. Decline in the Price of Bags. The Boston Journal says : Rags are going down. On Wednesday they fell two cents, and a greater decline threatened. The amount of paper stocli which the present high prices have brought, forward is immense.
