From the Washington sar The reader is referred to tie Star else where to day, for the partictlars of and circumstances attending the removal of Gen. McClellan from the coamand of the Army of the Potomac. was clearly the right of the- President to take the step, if, ;in his judgment, , he public in terest required such action, and no one who knew him will doubt !hat such was his sincere conviction. It is clear from the proupt publication of the correspondence betreen General in-Chief Halleck,EQuartereaster General Meigs, and the War Deptrtment, upon the subject'of Gen. McClellin's complaints against alleged want of‘tupplies for his troops, that the specific ohate under which he was displaced was a d*lension on his part to make the campaigns it was carved out for him here. No sentlble man will accept the Washington Rvibliean's theo ry that he was removedbeense the drift of the recent elections called for it; the re cult elections having goneoverwhel ming ly against those who for appear past have been his bitter enemies, insesson and out of season, and for those who have as steadily and persistently paced their trust for the speedy success of cur arms in him, and almost in him only,' • Nor will the country aiy more readily accept the theory enunoitted yesterday, by the Washington Chmiele, that he was removed on account of tetounding devel opements resnltino from recent investiga tions, &e., which, it messing deragatory to General M cClellan, appirently meant an aspersion upon his loyalty; which that journal, we are happy to jurceive, promptly retracts While it is true that there has been, nearly ever since he we:ensiled to the com mand of the scattered. btoken, and dispir ited forces of Pope, In issue between McClellan and the mlitary authorities here, with reference to the sufficiency of his supplies (especially & horses fit for cavalry and military service), we are sat isfied that to fight the battle which is probably to decide the+•result of the war, when and where he was ordered so to do by General HaHeck, 18 e very different one. That order directed hill to fight in the Valley, while, as he evidently believed, he would be deprived of tie assistance of per haps fifty thousand of liia troops, regarded by him as necessarr.to be kept ozi the Maryland aide, at theifords, to save his rear, and Marylaa4 and Pennsylvania from the disastrousonsequences of an other raid of Stuart' ?airy; which would almost surely bring; nt his defeat when a t the enemy accepted:' tle in the Valley, if by that time Stuartlhad succeeded in cut ting off his communication with Washing ton and Baltimore t lind destroying his sup plies, necessartly.acenmulated and lett on this side of the ricer:' He must also have been influenced by the fact that, if per mitted to ' follow his own plan of cam• paign, could otrtaia the assistance of some thirty or fifty thotniand troops who could not be spared from tiarding the National capital so l m iniieghl army was between Liam 'Nat" ' ti, as it would con tinue to be, an he march di rectly from Harper's Ferry upon Lee "in the Valley. His subsequent movements clearly de monstrate the fact that however proverbial reticence may have induced him to keep the secret of his plans in his own heart (for fear that if any one here knew them they might possibly come to the knowledge of the enemy), and thus to plead ember rassnent from want of supplies which may not have seriously existed, his declension to move when ordered so to do was really occasiobed by his conviction that if he waited until the rise of the river made him r.,0,000 stronger from the movement of his immediate command and 40,000 stronger from this vicinity, he could fight, not only with the assurance of victory, but just where richwy would belikely to end" the war hi favor of the Union. Had he assayed the battle of the Val ley without these additional 90,000 troops, he must have fought when and where Lee chose. Had ho been victorious in it the result would have simply been more or less loss of men or material on both sides, .as at Antietam ' with many other subsequent battles, as they fell back at Mountain pass. es, in all of which the rebels would have had choice of position. He evidently preferred to wait until the elements per mitted him, to move in greatest force. In his progress to the point where he pro posed to fight the enem —where he knew well the enemy must fight or soon sur render Richmond without abattle—he left, at everr gap through which Jackson (who remained in the valley with from 5,00, to 20,000 troops) might possibly threaten his rear, a sufficient guard to hold it quite long enough to secure his communications with his base of operations and supplies, and he steadily puilied his army on for the field of his own choice. We refer lo the banks of the Rapidan; the throat of Rich mond, because it is the defense of Gor donsville, through which the rebel capital receives three-fourths of its supplies of every description. lie new as well that Lee must light there to the sacrifice of his last man in its defense, and, if victorious there, Richmond would as speedily be at his mercy, as Washington would be at Lee's, with the Potomac as closely block aded as James River is, its communication with Frederick by turnpike as serioasly threatened as Petersburg now is from 'Suffolk, and with A.nnapoiis Junction in the hands of a victorious enemy. Were such the situation of Washington, the time for which it could continue to hold out could easily be counted by hours, and it is evident to us that Gen. McClel lan's plan of the campaign contemplated getting Richmond into that situation with in a week from to-day at the furthest. But it has been deter mined by his superi• ors in command that the cause of the country will be safer in other hands ; and, with his advance within thirty-two miles of the point where the battle must take place that will probably decide the fate of the war, he is prompt to obey the order directing him to repair to Trenton, New Jersey, and there await further orders. Though we have not yet seen his fare well address to his army, we learn by tel egraph that in it he does his best to try to nerve it to a proper discharge of its du ty in the momentous struggle which, he says, is on the eve of coming off; doubt. less as we explain above. To those who, like ourself, have placed our trust in him as the great Union Cap tain of the age, through good and evil re port, we have to point t.? his patriotic conduct in the present crisis as furnishing the example it is their duty to follow. He takes no thought of self at this time, his heart and mind being wrapped up in the cause of his country as involved in the mo mentous crisis to which his almost com pleted movement has brought that cause. His friends should, as one man, accept the action of his superiors in command here as a thing accomplished; to be made the best of to secure, with the command of the army in other hands, the glorious de cisive victory for the good cause he would surely, have achieved within thirty or forty miles of the point at which he had arrived when ordered to retire (personally) from the field. Gird.led Trees Mice often- produce sad havoc in young orchards and nurseries by gnawing the trunks near the surface of the ground, and not unfrequently for a considerable distance above it. This may be prevented by compressing the first snows that fall about them, by stamping and keeping them as hard as possible until spring. If, however, from neglect or any other cause, trees do get injured in this way, watch the opportunity, and as soon as the frost leaves the surface, bank them with soil, to the extent of the injury, and allow the same to remain.till the subsequent year. A new deposition, of granulated matter will thus be induced, and this becoming in due time liquified, the surface will ap pear nearly as smooth as before it was in- Jared. It will be well, however, before banking sup, to dig the soil thoroughly, if the frost will admit, and to the extent of the lateral limbs, and work in a liberal quantity of old, fine manure, mixed with a little ground bone, ashes or plaster to -each tree! This will stimulate action, and Cause a more rapid and abundant deposi tion of granular substance to heal and Conceal the wound, and be otherwise ben eficial to the tree. Those who have gum shellac dissolved will do well to brush the gnawed places over with that before bank ing up. Many valuable trees may be saved by this process—but perhaps notall. If gnawed places are found in the winter, or early spring, they should be kept covered with snow, or wrapped up at once to prevent their becoming dry and hard. Very much depends upon this. If girdled entirely around the tree, scions must be inserted in order to keep up the circulation. We have some interesting facts to communi cate on this subject.—K. E. Farmer.
