Governor Curtin has issued the follow ing proclamation for a day of general thanksgiving throughout the State: :2) Winntz.ts, It is a good thing to render thanks unto God for all his mercy and :oving kindness : 'therefore, I, Andrew G. Curtin, Gov. ' ernor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylva nia, do recommend that THURSDAY ? THE 27th DAY OF NOVEMBER NEXT, be set apart by the people of this Commonwealth, as a day of solemn Prayer and Thanksgiving to the.Alfinghty :—Giv ing Him humble thanks "that He has been graciously pleased to protect our free in stitutions and Government, and to keep us from sickness and pestilence—and to cause the earth to bring forth her increase, so that onr ga 4 -ners ars choked with the liar : vest—and to look so favorably on the toil of His children, that industry has thriven among us and labor had its reward; and also that He has delivered us from the hands of our enemies—and filled our offi cers and men in the field with a loyal and ) intrepid spirit, and given them victory— and that Lie has poured out upon us (albeit unworthy) other great and mani a told blessings Beseeching Him to help and govern us in His steadfast fear and love, and to put into onr minds good desires, so that by His continual help we may have a right .judgment in all things And especially praying Him to give to; ) I Christian churches grace to hate the thing *hid is evil, and to utter the teachings of [truth and righteousness, declaring openly rthe whole counsel of God sAnd most heartily entreating Him to be tow upon our civil rulers, wisdom and earnestness in council, and upon our mili tary leaders, zeal and vigor in action, that the fires of rebellion may be quenched =that we, being armed with . His defetice, may be preserved from all perils, and that thireafter our people, living in peace and quietness, may, froin generation to genet.- a;tion, reap the abundant fruits of His mercy and with joy and thankfulness pjiaise and magnify His holy name. Canceling Stamps, IThe Postoffice Department is much an ffiled by certain sharpers, who skillfully 0.1 patiently employ themselves in 'oblit erating the ink marks made in canceling letter stamps which have passed through the mails, and then putting them into cir culation as good as new. Many devices, some very ingenuous, have been indicated to prevent this species of rascality. One, suggested by the correspondent of an East ern; cotemporary, is to prepare the stamps (whibh can be done without increased ex pense) so that they shall be destroyed in theihsing, i. e., so far as a second applies- Lion iof them for the same purpose is con cerned. The principle of this method ap pears very simple, though it is in direct c.mtrast with that hitherto employed. NoW; letter stamps are printed on paper which is comparatively strong, while the adhesive paste on the back is often posi tively, and sometimes (as we ourselves hive found) superlatively, weak. The remedy will be to reverse these' relations, and to employ strong paste and the weak elt paper. The paper, in short, will be chiefly held together by its backing of paste) and any process of steaming, which lessens the tenacity of the paste, will also act iMthe same way to diminish the cohe sion Of the fibre of the paper. It can easily - thus be made physicalty impossible to remove a letter stamp once attached otheniise than in fragments. - _ A WOntan Removed from °Mee. Mis 4 Hannah M. Stewart, Postmistress at yrone, in this State, has been removed from office and .lames Plummer, a Repub lican politician, appointed in her place. Plummer probably desired to escape the draft, 'uod so sought and obtained this office. Miss Stewart is the daughter of a poor widow, whom she supported by means bf the small proceeds of this office, her two brothers being in the arm?! Let James Plummer, of Tyrone, Pa., be her alded to the world as he deserves! and let noti the present "no party" be de prived cif whatever benefit is due it for the n3agnaifimous, noble act of removing Mies Stewart - !, to make way for this unselfish patriot.--Indiana Democrat. Cohrt of Common pleas. The number of cases on the trial list in this Court, for the prosecution, was one hundred and forty. Of this number, sev enty were fixed for trial, commencing on Monday morning, before Judge Ritchie. The entire list has been already gone over, and out! of the seventy cases fifty-seven have been finally disposed of, and the re maining thirteen were continued or pass ed. The balance of the trial list will be taken upon Monday next, and it will be well for ;the parties in interest to be in attendance. .The 011 Business. The Oil City Register gives the follow ing review of the oil market- for the past ek: The market still continues brisk at this point, with fair transactions. The fire last weekcaused the producers to be some what stiffer with their prices, and oil ad vanced iv: trifle at the wells, and still ex hibits an upward tendency. We quote oil at the;wells firm at 75 to 8-5 . cents.— Oil at this point S1,00(51,10. Those who were burrit out last week are bneily en gaged in rebuilding, and in a few weeks the sufferers will resume operations.— But it is a : question whether the same ter ritory will be as productive as before the occurrence of the fire. 30,000 barrels, about, is thus thrown out of the market, at the very !time when the producer was be ginning to, realize a fair price for his pro duct. The loss falls very heavy, but most cf the oil men will be able to bear it. We stated last week that there were some 50,- 000 bbls of oil at this point. This, our readers will take notice, is the accumu lation of the past three months, there having beoa but a limited navigation of the Allegheny carried on for that period, for want 4 water. This, with probably as much more from different points, will go forth upon the first rise. The main por tion will go t6supply the exhausted stock of refiners between here and Pittsburgh, and at that point. It is estimated here that Pittsburgh and vicinity will require : 2 50,000 blils. to supply their refineries for I the winter. Other points will require as I much more. We hardly see where all of this oil is to come from, from the fact of their being only a light stock here, 50,000 barrels, that it has taken three months to accumulate. We merely give our views on the subject for what they are worth. The Pittsburgh market has :improved since our last, the latest quotations be ing 8 RBI cents, with a firm market and a tendency upward. The Eastern markets are improting, and the stock is light, quotations range from 18 to 20 ets, for the Crude, Refined 33 to 35. The market for substitutes is still quite lively, as the drafted men from Washing ton and other Western counties come into Camp Howe. The huffiness is now mostly in the hands of middlemen, and transac tions are generally private, the price be ing regulated by the verdancy and anxiety of the purchaser. Soldiers Dead. The ordinary operations of trade are j generally easy to understand by average 1 intellects, but there are some matters ' which will set the shreWdest to thinking when they attempt to answer the question above. We found oursel4s at a great loss to answer it a few dais since, on stepping into McClelland 's Fifth street Auction House. They sell boots and shoes of every description at lesS than half price and have an immense stock of dry goods, hosiery, underclothing, 1 &c. , far below wholesale • prices.,, Mr. !McClelland has just returned from the East, where he bought a huge stock of goods, embracing cutlery and notions of every conceivable character. These he offers at miraculous ly low prices and the traoe will find it to their advantage to call aPd examine his stock, as they can pick up many rare bar g ains. .A the new otions McClel land has is amon ne g at postage; urrency wallet, which will be useful to all. After looking over the goods and priceswe were utterly unable to solve the above question and we leave it with our readers. The Great Exeliemen't.
