Old Town is situated on the Mississippi, twenty-tire miles below Helena, and is of no strategic importance. Cypress swamps, low lands and alligators are the only objects of interest to relieve the ennui of inactiv ity. A few miles back from the river lives the somewhat notable Matt. Ward, who deliberately shot Butler, the school teacher, at Louisville a few years ago, for the doubtful Frirne of whipping Mr. Ward's younger brother. He is a cadav erous looking gentleman, and his appear asce indicates that once he has mixed with genteel and good society; that he, does now, to any extent, is seriously doubted by all those who knew him; he rarely comes within our lines, and outside of which the opportunities are very limited f in this vicinity. lie is reported by his' acquaintances to have furnished transpor tation and uegroes to the rebel army, and otherwise aided the rebellion by manufae taring articles of clothing for the use of ( the army, and is heart and soul with them —his physical condition only preventing him from being in the army at the present time. A month or so ago Gov. Sprague, of RhOde Island, issued his flaming call for a colored regiment of volunteers. The New York Evening • Post announces that thirty-five recruits have been enrolled 1 'Why don't the hundreds and thousands of negroes who, we are told, are spoiling f or a fight, flock to Rhode Island and enlist under the banner of the Governor. No oth er State calls upon them to volunteer. Little Ehody is the ground upon which our colored brethren can display their pa triotism and shoulder the musket. The Oyster Season in Baltimore. Under the ordinance of the city of Bal- timore, the oyster season began on the Ist day of the present month: but, thus far comparatively few have been brought to market, except for the packers. As yet they are generally poor and unfit for use, and the protracted drought of the summer prevented them from fattening as rapidly as if the season had had more rain. The waters of the lower Chesapeake are now open, and from that part of the bay the best oysters are always brought. For ma ny years the York river furnished immense supplies; but for two years past none were brought from that river, so that it is prob able what are there will soon be of fine quality. A large number of vessels em ployed during the summer in other trade have left for the oyster grounds, and in • short time the supply will be ample.
