It was a Ramsgate boarding-house, and no longerthen last autumn, that my wife and I first made the acquaintance of Miss Fyfe. She was staying there, with her maid, for the season, and my wife and she soon became quite intimate, so that after a time Miss Fyfe spent most of her eve nings in our room. She was a pleasant companion cheerful, and good-natured; . she had travelled much, both at home and abroad, and had hived up rich stores of infcrmation and experience, which she was always willing to draw upon for the bene• fit of her friends. In person she was tall and thin, with gray hair, a strong reso lute face, and large gray eyes, full of vi vacity and humour. We were all seated round the lire in our sitting-room, one chill evening in early "anturtm, when Miss Fyfe related to us the following adven ture, which, I may here remark, I have her full permission to set does and make üblic. ult is now some six or ear* years ago, began Mrs. Fyfe, since My nephew Fred, having just left college,- mu to reside with me a short time previous to going out to India. I had bent living for a year past in London, andbmigrown heart ily tired of it; indeed the trywe and 1 had never agreed very well topithar, and by the time I had been in it a month or two I always find myself pomaned with an in tense longing to visit eilletre the country or the sea. go, in the Wmtasat instance. I determined to' go dawn for a while to a little country-bates I have in Leicestershire, which banana to be with out a tenant, at which p hires arrang• ed that Fred would jots :res. The idea of a few quiet months intim country was as pleasant to him as to rulreldf, for he was busy with his Sanscrit and Arabic, and in London he had so many acquaint ances,"that his studies con constantly in terrupted. The beginiug of June found us all comfortably established in Ivy Lodge—myself, Fred, and the two women servants, which were all our little estab lishment needed. There was one fault to find with Ivy Lodge. and that was the reason why I could never keep a tenant in it more than two winters in succession: this fault was its distance !rota any other habitation, even one of the humblestkind: the nearest house being, in fact, two miles away, while it was six miles distant from the country town. But neither Fred nor 1 eared for this in the least, for he got on 102.9 M Z 69,786 66 1.821 00 -- 2.919 33 famously with his studies within doors, and botanize(' to his heart's content in the !ields; while a visit to Westbury once a week satisfied all try social requirements. Well, summer and autumn passed quiet ly and pleasantly. One morning in early winter, Fred received a letter inviting him to attend the wedding of an old col lege friend, who lived about thirty miles away in another country. Fred replied, accepting the invitation, and set off short ly afterwards withoutt fixing the duration of his visit, which would probably extend over three or four days. On the second morning after Fred's absence, Mary, the house maid came to me to inquire whether I could contrive to spare her and Bessy for the afternoon and evening, to attend the wakes at Westbury- I made no demur at letting them go, for they had been coop ed up long enough without a holiday; so in the afternoon they were called for by Mary's father, and duly driven away by him in his light cart. Before going the man observed that it would "most likely be rather late at night before the lasses could get back again, but perhaps I would not mind it for once." • "lithe,- are likely to be very late,'': I said, "it will, I think, be best for them:to stay all night at your house, and get back the first thing in the morning in time for breakfast'. .$ 63.000 00 . 2.160 00 . 250 00 . 7.809 43 . 18.341 % . 27,695 Iv . 174.075 11 50A251 76 Cresson 8 rings, Cambria.
