Tames Hamill, now the champion oarsman of America, arrived from the scene of his late victories by die noon train on Saturday, bringing with hint the j amauVial boat or wherry in which he won oth races, named by him the ‘•Alexander King " after one of our citizens. 11 was accompanied by many friends an , 1 was enthusiastically greeted by many more on his arrival. It is said that Hamill's friends who took all the bets offered. sone. at heavy odds, won nut ices than i": 20,110,. The Eastern " sports " seem quite satisfied with one contest with Pitfsburgh muscle. skill and endurance, as Bash's challenge to Stephens remains unanswered and the terms for the four oared match talked of have not beedagreed to. Having beaten their champion twice with so much ease they do not know what we may yet have in store for them, should they risk another trial. Sadden Death or a On Friday night, about twelve o'clock, an Irish woman na:ned Duffy raised quite a commotion in the vicinity of her rusi dence, Smith's Court, off Robinson street, First ward, Allegheny, by rushing out into the street, muting that some one had killed her child—and the babe. about five months old, was really found dead in a bed up Stairs. Mrs. Duffy and her husband both seemed under the influence of liquor, and as the woman blamed the latter for the child's death, he was arrested and locked up until the Coroner was sent for and hcld an inquest. On examination it was timud that the child had died from conrulAons— and as no marks of violence could be found, a verdict was rendered of ••death from natural causes." The condition of the parents and their cosnequent inattention to the child probably hastened its death. Harrisburg. Hon. Thos. M. Howe, chairman of the Executive Committee, left for Harrisburg on Friday night. The object of his visit is to ascertain how many men Allegheny county is expected to furnish under all the calls for troops and all other informa tion necessary to a rapid organization of the regiments now recruiting. The com mittee are extremely anxious that there shall be no drafting in Allegheny county and wish to take active measures to sup ply our quota at once. Mr. Howe will be home to-day (if he has not already re turned) and by to-morrow we may look for important announcements from the Com mittee. The patriotism of our people is unbounded and every man is interested in getting our troops into the field as early as possible. Under these circumstances what can we not do ? Colors Presented. • On Friday evening, Co. B, Clark In fantry was the recipient of an elegant stand of colors, presented by the Allegheny Greys (a home guard company formerly commanded by Capt. Boisol, of the In fantry) and the ladies who originally gave it to- that company. Jas. M. Ccoper, Esq., made the presentation address and Capt. Boisol responded in a. happy vein. After the last speech Jas. M'Candless, Esq., made one even more effective, pre :seating Capt. B. with SlOO to procure little comforts for his command. Then ;followed three cheers for the ladies, the lireys and Mr. M'Candless. J. X. Moorhead Infantry. The time in which we must make up our quota is limited, and unless we are ready at the time, no grace will be allowed, and drafting, looked upon with so much repugnance, will begin. Those who wish to avoid conscription, will fill ap com panies now forming. Capt. J. H. Hughey, of the J. K. Moorhead Infantry, will take a few more good men, to whom all the bounties and a private bounty in addition will be paid. Office in Lyon's building, Fifth street, second story. Pier Rifles, Co. B. The S. M. Kier Rifles, Capt. Jas. Col lord, have filled their ranks to their maxi mum and the orginization of Co. B is .commenced, with Frank Van Gorder as Captain. ==M! eiy - liFiatreiatilt even among the rudest and most barbarous nations, these useful and beautiful organs have at . - tracted attention, and have been regarded as being of great importance for the pur pose of giving symmetry and beauty to the face. Whenever nature, that is sometimes I sparing of her gifts, has failed to bestow them on the teeth, and has made them defective in form, and tarnished in color, great care and cleanliness should be used in order to remedy these imperfections and faults. Then it is that a scientific den tist should be consulted, before it is too late, for thousands of teeth are sacrificed through carelessness that might be pre served through life if only attended to in time, and we would say to all needing the services of a skillful dentist to consult Dr. Von Bonhorst. His attainments are of the highest order, as is vouched for by eminent gentlemen, of skill in his profes sion. Many believe:him to be unsurpassed, and he is amply provided with all the ap pliances that modern art has given to the profession. His rooms are at No. 54 St. Clair street, over .1. M. Little's store. Found Drowned. The body of a drowned man was dis covered floating in the Ohio river at Wells li ttrg, on Wednesday morning, and an in quest held on the same. The verdict of the jury was fimnd drowned. The body, which had been in the water a consider able time, was that of a white man of me dium height, had on it a calico shirt, and was dressed like a river man. In . the pockets were found fifteen cents in change, and also a two dollar note on a New York bank. The body was decently buried. _____.......„,._ Deserved Promotion. Lieut. Henry W. About half past two o'clock on Sunday morning a fire, the origin of which has not been ascertained, broke out on Marbury street in the rear of the large planing mill on the corner of that street and Duquesne Way, owned by John Heath, which was in a short time entirely destroyed, leaving only a portion of the bare walls staudihk. The building, which with the steam pines furnishing the motive power, was valued at about $ 12,0n0 was occupied by several distinct establishments, viz: the planing and flooring mill of Heath A Cu.. the box factory of Heath & 011icer, the door and sash factory of Donnelly & Johnston, and the shop of Isaac Mien, boat builder. Mr. Heath has about $2,1.100 insurance on the building, but none of the tenants, we believe, had any insurance, except Mr. Gullett, whose loss over hist:- rAnce is about $l,OOO. We could not ascertain the loss of the other occupants of the building. The lire also communicated to a carpen ter shop on Duquesne Way, owned and occupied by hall and Richey, (the power furnished from the phtning mill) which was deturoyed, with i In nets barrels anti 12,000 staves, and all the tools in the shop.
