The Presentslien Of an Address by an Orphan Roy--The Arch. bishop's 'Response—Serenade by the Orphan Asylum Band. dm. The first and the most gratifying public welcome which the Archbishop of New York has received since his retnrn from his important mission in Europe was• paid to him yesterday morning by a delegation of four hundred orphans, consisting of an equal number of male and female Catholic from the asylums of this city. It was a great event to these little ones, and one that will long be remembered hereafter among the brightest remit'• seences of their lives. What added to the character of the occasion, and to the tribute of affection paid to the distinguish ed prelate was the litct that it was, so to speak, tut extemporaneous demonstration, got up on the impulse of the moment.— At ten o'clock precisely two lrundred and two hundred boys, clad in neat sum mer attire, and escorted by several of the patrons of the institutions, made their appearance in front of the residence of the Archbishop, on the corner of Madison avenue and Th;rty-sixth street.. All along the line efprocession formed by the boys were borne several Star Spangled Banners, which, as they waved in the breeze, gave a most animated appearance to the whale spectacle. Tim gr.Nitest order and decor uni characterized their demeanor through out the whole affair. At the head of the precession was carried :: magt, ificent silk flag, bearing a tiled:Wien potrait of Wash ington, t-xocuted In the highest style of arr. A. large number or persons, attracted by the cheerful appearance of the orphan , , assembled at the arehapiseopui residence where the little ones were drawn up in eight rants, in true military style. It must have Wenn. most gratifying sight, not only to the Archbishop, but to all who had the pleasure of witnessing the interesting spectacle The wiudowsnud balconies of the whole neighnorhood were crowded with oc cupants, and the sidewalks were thronged with earnest spectators. Immediately after the arrival of th;:lorphaes Archbishop Hughes made his appearance, with Arch bishop Purcell of Cincinnati; Archbishop '...70nn01y, of Halifax, and the very Rev. William Starts, Vicar General, and Rev. Walter Quarters. lie appeared in the most robust health, and, if it be lair to judge from physical appearance, he is good for twenty or thirty years more of hard work. His trip to Europe has evidently done him no harm. Amongtliegentiement , hocamotopaythel respects to the Archbishop, and who took an netive pert in the affair, were Nce , srs. M. J. 0 Honnel, James B. Nicholsm. Dines Carotin. J•clin Bryan John Mulialy, Hugh Keiiy, Reilley, Gov. McElroy, P. Quinn, and many others. When the .crchbishop appeared, Mr. 0' Donne:, its : - ..e.reitary of the Asylum (of which the A reiil..Mop, is President ad dressed him briefly as follows:- - Veou fleAce—A deputation of cvo humhed orphans from our esylum of girls, and two Imaitritl rum our asylum for boys, wait upon yud for the i.urpose of paying their respects and ecnigritinliiting you on your Hare return. The onmouticement of your Grace's safe return has thrilled mi with delight, whilst we cannot command language to express its intensity. We shall fail in giving a congratulati o n which can rival, or even distantly approximate to the gorgeous reception which the high born'and noble of the Old World accord ed to your Grace l but grand as they were, yet infinitely short of the merit which evoked them), still We can give what we know that your paternal heart will regard as of equal value to any ovation you have received— the orphans' welcome. Our prayers have been uttered up for you un ceasingly, and they shall continue t o be.— The orphans' welcome and the orphans' prayers are all we have to offer. can not forget the words of our Reverend Vicar General, the Rev. Mr. Sierra, in his eloquent address to us on the occasion of our recent exhibition. In alluding to the departure of your Grace for Europe, he said "The last words of his Grace atter taking leaved us, and the vessel had been unmoored and was gliding from the wharf were, "Remember and take care of the orphans at Christmas." Deep, deep, deep in the recesses of our hearts have those affectionate words found an abiding place, and as long px, God in His mercy may spare us they will there remain. Your last thoughts, most reverend and beloved father, were for us. Could other than Our first thoughts bo for your Grace? We seek to be the very foremost to greet you; and in extending our feeble but heartfelt welcome, and invoking the Almighty to vouchsafeto you long lite, perfect health, anttunalloyed happiness, we beseech your Gra:cote , bestow upon us year paternal ben edietiou. Here the children all simatancously knelt down and received his blessing. The Archbishop was sensibly affected daring the delivery of this simple and touching address, and his voice bespoke the ( deep•felt emotions of his heart as he re plied:— "My dear orphans," said he, "your ad dress is the most touching welcome' could receive in the city of New York. It is true, as you say, that every kindness has been extended to me while I was absent from you. I have been amongst princes of Cle church and of the world; but even then is was in my heart that I would much rath er he among you. And to-day that aspi ration of mine is realized. You call me slier, and towards you I would be even moee than a father, were that possible; but it I were not you have many, many f ethers and mothers, and sisters and broth ers i n this great community. All our clergy are your fathers. Our people arc your patrons, end I waylay your brothers and sisters. In fact, my dear children, you at least have no enemies in this world, but friends, not merely in your own church, but among our fellow-citizens in general. I give you, my dear boys, for safe keeping, the address which was presented to me a twv evenings ago by the Catholic Young Men's Society of Dublin. Ido not mean to alienate it, but I put in your hands for safe keeping; and so. also, a likeness of our most hoTv hither I confide to the custo d the feniabi orphans. All of us, my tor children, have one great, adorable Fatlicr in Heaven, but we Catholics have our most holy father on earth. He knows you. He has seen sour names, all. When a collection of Peter's pence was made ! some two years ago, I directed that every penny contributed should be recorded with the name of the contributor. Your patrons supplied you each with some small gift, and etery name ofyours was recorded on the NA - . The money was sent then, but it was said here that the Pope's ene mies bed obtained sacrilegious possesion of the city of Home. Your names were too sacred to fall into such hands astheirs. However, the day before I left Rome the long catalogue, beautifully arranged, and extending to a little over a mile in length, reached the holy city. Since then I have learned that the great visible head of the church ; our glorious Pius IX., bad taken a morning's walk along the line, and that, though he could not read each came. nev ertheless the section in which the orphans were preeented under their prope head, affected him very deeply. He is. on earth, the father of us all. To him, as the vicar of Christ, we . owe eve:it:sting allegi ance it. view of his great commission, and in view, also, of our own eternal happi ness. You will pray for him as well as for Inc. You will not meet him ell . have had flue happiness of doing, except in Heaven. where, if you are good children. you will be sure to see I'ius IX." When the Archbishop eonelndedhe pre sented the youthful speaker with the ad dress referred to in his remarks. which was printed on green silk in gold letters, and beautifully mounted. lie also presented the little girl.; with a full length portrait of the Pope, hand4omcly frauted.
