Military Enrollment. in our issue olyesterday we stated that we had been informed mat our Collet ) Commissioners bad, in lieu of a Correct enrollment of the militia of Allegheny county, forwarded to the Adjutant lieu - mare °thee a list of the taxaotes of the county. Yesterday one of the Comity Commissioners called upon us to correct this statement and informed us that they had not sent on the list of taxable., but merely a statement, showing that the , whole number of' persons liable to pelyurin duty, as returned by the ussevsursl for Iti6l , is 12,359. So - the main tact is us! we stated, the return was based upon the taxable list of last year The circular, from the headquarters of the Penn sylvania Militia, directed the Commis sioners to forward the list of those liable' to military duty in this couuty "as made up from the , assessment Lists and military rolls," and which should have been forwarded by the Ist of Dece lii . ber last. The language of this circular plainly indicated that what was desired was au accurate list, tif those subjected to draft, in case such a measure simital be necessary. Yetour Commissioners, know ing the laxity with which assessors have perfOrmed their duty—that not a dozen military roll hurl been returned out of six times that number of districts—tha t not one half the tax-payers of the county are usually assessed_with military tax, on the w payment of which their return as partially based—that such return did not in clude a large number of persons subjrrt to military duty, over eighteen and under twenty-three—that it did include many over forty-five, not subject to military duty—and that. such u list, if a draft were Ordered, would be totally useless, or, it used, operate very unfairly to thus,- upo , it—simply sent to Ilarrisbmw Fl statemet of the aggregate number subject to tary duty. And why ? Because, in opinion, the list was not wanted for . purpose of making a draft, and a hew en rollment would subject the euuuty to a useless expense of t5 2 , , ,00 11 - Economy is alt very well, but such u policy as this, in times like these, shows tuo touch disre gard for the. rights of our citizens.. We hope that the measure may not be necessary, but if a draft were to be order ed now, is it to be presumed that the list of taxables will be used as the basis for Allegheny county? Do the Commission ers suppose that such unfair discrinana tious would be submitted to ? Nu: They admit that the; have no correct military roll and that it a draft should he necessary it Would require at least ten days to inahe out such rolls properly, as it would be necessary fur the asses:stirs to go over every district in the county. 10 admit this is to acknowledge that they have nut done their duty—and should any delay occur that allot have been avoided by their strict compliance with the Liw, the people will hold :lent respups, ble for it. 4 reference to our dispatches will show that a draft has beep ordered by the Gen eral Government. Perhaps, with the knowledge of this fact, the Commissioners will now order a proper enrolltuent. • New Tranauttog Store. It will doubtlels interest those of air fair readers who are not. already informed of the fact that a new trimming store has been 6pened at No. 78 .11arket street, be tween fourth and the Diamond, by the new firm of Macrum & Glyde. The store, that formerly occupied by Charles Lipner, deceased, has been elegantly re hued and is now a model of neatness and convenience—large wholesale rooms hav ing been fitted up in the upper stories. The stock of goods is entirely new and fresh throughout, containing no old stock what ever, but a complete assortment of trim mings, furnishing goods, embroideries, hosiery, gloves and tancy articles, of the latest styles, suitable for the season. In the ladies' department there is an endless variety ofgooas, embracing skirts, corsets, &c., with nets, head-dresses and other per sonal adornments for the sex. But further enumeration is useless; suffice' it to say that any desired article in the trimming line can be found here of the best quality and at a fair price. The new firm is bound to succeed. Its members are both gentle men well and favorably known in the city —Mr. D. 8. Macrum, who has had many ;ears' experience in the trimming business an d Mr. R. C. Glyde, who has, in a few years of mercantile life, made a good rep utation as a prompt, reliable and energetic businitss man. They have secured the services of competenrand attentive clerks and will do all in their power to satisfy in every particular those who patronize their store. We sincerely hope they may pros per in their new undertaking. Larceny ors Pocket Book. Gabriel Isaacs, who keeps a variety stand in the Allegheny market, has been committed to jail by Mayor Drum charged on oath of Mrs. James Orr with the larceny o f a pocket book containing a five dollar bill. She had left the pocket book on Isaacs' stand, and on returning for it, he admitted to her that he had seen it, but denied having touched it. The lady did not want to prosecute, but insisted on having her money. Is aacs still denied that he had it, when he was arrested, and it was proved that hehad got a butcher in the market to change a five dollar bill of the same bank described and claimed by Mrs. Orr. It will be remembered that on Sunday morning week a man named David Gaw was found lying in the bed of the canal, just below • !he Washington Hotel, where he was supposed to have fallen during. Sa turday night, while intoxicated: . His tajn• ries were of such a character as to cause his death within a few days. There being rumors of foul play, Coroner M'Clung held an inquest, which was not concluded until last Saturday, when the jury found that deceased came to his death from injuries inflicted by James Brady. The evidence on which this verdict was based is that Gaw, on the Saturday night in question, having been ejected from the Washington Hotel, where he had refused to pay for his liquor, was loafing about the platform overhanging the canal bank, when Brady, who is a switch -tender on the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad, came out of the house. Deceased approached and struck at Brady, who pushed him backward, over the railing, into the canal, remarking: "That's just where the ---- ought to be:' The Coroner had Brady arrested, but not feeling willing to take the respon sibility of committing him to jail, placed him in the tombs. Chief Hague made an information against him, and the Mayor. on Saturday, committed him to jail on the charge of murder. An application for lirady's release on bail will probably be made. :Messrs blishe On Monday Howe, Harbaugh nd Hartley, designated by Gov. The fire having spent its force some ; what, a pipe, fashioned liken goose neck, with a piiir of old pants, for a seed hag, was put into the bole, and the oil and gas rushed forth and again took fire from a pile of lumber w leh, caught from the first fire. The scene is described as grand be yond description. The oil gushed forth from a pipe a distance of sixty feet, tak ing fire as soon as it came in contact with the air—belching forth a sheet of flame that would have caused a salamander to have died with pure envy had he seen it. This fire did little or noiamage, and was soon got under. After tubing it down for a depth of 6 feet it commenced to flow periodically, at a tremendous rate. Un fortunately, while a person on the premi ses was experimentingwith the conductor, some twelve feet of it was blown out and the bole filling up with sand and gravel, the well ceased to flow. On Saturday evening the body of a new born babe was found on the river shore, near the Marine Railway. It had been rolled up in a piece of cloth, to which two bricks had been attached, for the purpose of sinking it. It had been in the water but a short time, but no clue could be had as to its parents, Coroner McClung held an inquest, and the jury, being of opinion that the child was still-born, so found in their verdict. The supposition was, that the parents, in order to avoid the trouble and expense of a decent burial, had re sorted to this method of putting their off spring on! of sight. Found DroWned.4llquent.
