Come Up stud Subscribe. We direct special attention to the adver tisement of tha Executive Committee in another column. It contains information of importance to all engaged in recruiting. Now is the time for every man to do his duty to his country; let one and all come i up and swell the Volunteer Bounty Fund td ---- 'weetiniug a Business Institu tion. The appearance of the newspaper press in most civilized countries would induce a casual- observer to suppose that ADVER TISING was a universally recognized and established BUSINESS INSTITUTION. In ordinary times the press teems with adver tisements, and appearances certainly indi cate the free use of journals of large eir culiiiion as the great auxillery in business enterprise. But appearances in this case, as in others, are not altogether true, for the fact is that out of ten men doing busi ness, probably there are not more than two who rightly value and liberally use advertising mediums ; two more, perhaps, occasionally resort to them, while the rest rarely, if ever employ them at all, and plod along in obscure circles of trade, and pass through life without an effort to rise above the position in which circum stances originally placed them. But there is something more to he con sidered on this subject. Experience has always shown to the conductors of news papers that in periods of general depres sion, from whatever cause, all classes of men are rather disposed to yield to the de pressing influence than to rise up, encoun ter and resist it. Happily there are indi vidual exceptions, and it is these excep tions which finally aid the turn 01 affairs, and contribute to the restoration of pros perity. But men, as represented by classes, shun the encounter, avoid the struggle, and if they do not actually . succumb, sink down in hopeless prostration for the time being. In nothing does this appear more distinctly than in the disposition to with draw from public attention in the adver tising columns of the press ; yet this is the very place in which, of all others, the ac tive business man should constantly be seen and known and read of all men. The present time is particularly illustra tive of what we say, and yet we can con ceive of nothing more unwise and impoli tic. Have men, women and children ceased to eat, and drink . , and wear out clothes? Nobody will pretend that such is the case. Yet here we have a large bu siness population, engaged in these pro cesses every day. We are surrounded by a large multitude of people in our own State who are doing the same thing in nu merous towns, and villages, and rural dis tricts,,who are supplied mainly from this city. Yet we find a marked disposition to recoil from an adverse condition of the times, to fold the arms, and t u mourn over "the situation" as a barren and profitless waste. We have as much respect. for common sense as we have confidence in it, other wise we should really feel some hesitation in thus discussing a subject in which we seem to have a primary interest. But our primary interest is in the maintenances. of a healthful public sentiment. one which will encourage rather than depress and use the. times so as to make the best of them. Our advertising columns are just as available as ever in all the channels of trade and commerce, the Post now circu lating more freely than ever amongst all classes of the people, and offers the ad vantages of a universal advertising medi um to the enterprise of the public. Let us hope that a healthy public sentiment will reanimate the spirit of the people, quicken and uphold the energy of busi ness character, and assure to our city that liberal prosperity to which she may cnc,:- justly aspire, From the Sixty-Second. A great Ar meeting is to be held at West New ton to-day, at which a larre Clogging Fruit Jars. J'he homestead gives the following ad. vice respecting jars for preserved fruit, and the manner of closing them when filled : For the preservation ul all kinds of fruit. use glass bottles or jars. Select those of even thickness, or rather of even thinness, for they are often exposed to considerable heat, and while they should not be so thin as to break in common handling, or burst fro% internal pressure caused by fermentation, still they should not be thick, or of pressed glass, when blown-glass jars can be readily obtained. So much for the bottles. New as to closing them air tight, we know corks will not do it. The very structure of the sub stance is against it, unless cork of the most velvety character is obtained, and this is costly. We recommend waxed cloth tied over the jars as a substitute at once cheap and effective, and have never found anything superior to it. Prepare the cloth in tins way : Melt together some rosin. beeswax and tallow in equal parts : tear the cloth in strips tour inches wide, or at least wide enough conveniently to tie over the month of the jar, and dip these strips, drawing them through the hot wax and stripping nearly all the wax off. With cloth thus prepared, alter the jar is filled with hot preserves, and while still hot, close the mouth and bind it on withgood linen cord. Then with shears trim off as much of the waxed cord as is desirable, and then dip it in dome melted wax. which should he made with only about half as much tallow. Sealing wax may be used instead if desired. The jars should be put where the wax will cool at once, so that the exhaustion caused by the cooling of the preserves and the condensation of the steam, may not cause the wax to run through the cloth. Nothing can he more thoroughly air-ti,zht than the bottles so prepared. `►luu Killed. A Regimentor II eke. The Eagle steam fire-engine was plan ned and her construction superintended by James Nelson, Esq.. one of our most skillful mechanics. Most of our readers have seen this splendid monument of the skill of Pittsburgh workmen, and its com pleteness and efficiency for the purpose de signed refiectgreat credit upon the designer Appreciating the services rendered then by Arr. Nelson, the members of the Eagle Fire Engine and Hose Company conceived the design of manifesting their gratitude in a proper manner. This was carried into effect last evening, when Mr. Nelson and a few other invited guests met the members of the company at a banquet set out at the Seetin Hoilse; in'the Diiimond. The meal was a sumptuous one, doing in finite credit to Mr. Stone. the proprietor of the house, and all present partook heartily. The cloth being removed and glasses filled, Mr. Nelson was surprised by Hon. W. F. Johnson rising and presenting to him, on behalf of the Company, in a fitting ad dress, a splendid set of mathematical in struments, in a handsome case with a suitable inscription. Mr. Nelson, unpre pared for such a demonstration, and natu rally of a quiet and retiring could find no words to express Ili, thanks and delegated that task to Hon. P. C. Shannon, who replied for him in a speech at once, eloquent and appropri ate, Both addresses were complimentary to the mechanical skill of Mr. Nelson, and the efficiency and disinterestedness of our fire department, and elicited much ap plause. A few speeches, replete with wit and good feeling, were made by other gen tlemen present, and the assembly dispersed at an early hour.
