About twelve o'clock on Saturday night a fire broke out in a tavern in the Diamond kept' by Charles P. Hugh., which was ex tinguished after some slight dainage to the dinintroom. O n examination some com bustible matter was discovered in the vi cinity of a ''musical clock" in the dining room, which was burned, and Mr. Phillip Vie`rheller, owner of the House, suspect ing Mugle had him arrested on a charge of arson, alleging that his motive was to ob tain the insurance of $1,940 on the farni tam' and -- clock, which were insured in the "PeoDsylvania." The furniture was not mu c h damaged, but the clock was destroy ed. There is an insurance on the liquor and bar fixtures in the "Girard" and the house is insured in the "Home" of New York. After a preliminary hea:ing Nagle was discharged on his own recognizance to appear when the insurance cotnpan ie. have iuvestigatad the affair. • A Terrible Weapon. A correspondent, writing from New bern, says : By order of Goveinor Curtin, it is expected that the Fifty-First Pennsyl vania Volunteers will be furnished with a battery of two.of the newly-invented guns, which are easily transported, and are capa ble of discharging one hundred one-ounce balls per minute. If the weapon is ap proved by the General of the division, the guns will be forthcoming immediate ly.— One man can carry the gun proper, and it requires but five men to man it in action. Once get the range of the enemy, and no force could stand against a regiment capa ble pf discharging-a volley of two hundred from a squad of ten men, per minute, not coeilidering the havoc the remainder of the regiment were creating with their Enfields. It is very probable that the weapons are already on their way hither. Should the Fifty-First obtain another show, armed with this new weapon, "somebody will be hart." Brakeman Killed. On Thursday night last, Samuel Wilt, of Altoona, a brakeman on one of thefreight trains between Harrisburg and Altoona, fell from his train and was run over and killed. It appears that, for the purpOse of riding more comfortably, he had placed a board diagonally-across a stock car, be tween the.slats, leaving one end protrud ing over the bumper he occupied. While passingthrough the narrows, below Lewis town, it is supposed that the board was shaken out of its place at. the opposite end from the one on which he sat, thereby calming it to tilt andletting him drop be tween the bumpers. He fell with his legs sero o the rail and his body on the outside of the t s _nelt- One of his legs was crushed from the !high to the knee, where both legs were e.nt off. He lived but a few hours after the .glecident. His remains were taken to Altoona on Friday morning. lie leaves a wife but no children. Turned nit Alive. Some time since Mr. David Y(ihe, o Pigeon Creek, Washing_ ton' County, - went to the battle-field of Fort P. °nelson and had disinterred (as be supposed,) the body of his son, who had receivedla wound during the fight, of which be afterwards died and was buried. The body was con veyed home and re-interred in the family burial ground, at Pigeon Creek, all the family being satisfied of the identity of the body, except a sister of the deceased. Last week Mr. Yohe was astonished at receiving a letter from his son, whom he supposed dead and buried, stating, that after some week's treatment inihe hospital he had recovered, so far as to be able to re join his company and expected to take part in the neiebattle. The joy of the family can better be imagined than described. Gone East. The Committee appointed to visit Phila delphia and other points in the East, to see after our wounded, consisting of Capt. New and Attractive Book*. - We are indebted to Henry Miner, Lyon's building, Nos. 71 and 73 Fifth street, next door to the Post office, for several new books from Carleton, of New York, suc cessor to Rudd dk, Carleton, which we think admirably fitted to dispel the most obsti nate fit of blues, or arouse a spirit of pat riotism in the most phlegmatic. Anvexus Walla; Hts Rom—The name of 'the author of this book is quite suffi cient to command for-i a general perusal. Though some of the lrters and sketches have before appeared in print they are his choicest productions, and even those who have read them will wish to have them in this form for preservation. The infinite humor of the ' Wane Showman" is of a character that cannot fail to please, and the fine tinted illustrations of this book will render it doubly attractive. LYRICS FOR FREEDOM AND OTHER i s —The present struggle has brought_ out oceans of lyric poetry, much of which is very trashy and some - really meritorious anti patriotic. This work contains some of both hinds, produced by the younger members of the Continental Club of New York, and published by its sanction. It embraces: Hymns the Republic; The Battle Field; War Pictures: Home and Camp; Shrine of the Brave; Shadows of Destiny; Lyrics for Freedom; Among the Lowly; To England; Pasquinades. The book is well timed and will be popular. WHY PAUL FERROL!. KILLED ma WIFE. —" Paul Ferrol]," published several years ago, was a most exciting novel and created au immense sensation. Corinth. In the meantime our army is in the worst possible •condition for fighting in case Beauregard should decide to attack onee more. Onr troops scattered over a section of country twenty miles 'in extent, our baggage wagonsand artillery blocking- ul. the roads. Our men scattered between the; fiont and r the river, some of them trying to got rations, others in search of clothing, and but very few in line. It is a melancholy sight to see what a poor, thin, straggling line of own is left of what was once a full and noble regiment. Several of them We recognize as having come into the field ten hundred and forty strong, and ore now rerineed to less than five hun dred. It might be some consolation to us to feel that the enemy was ignorant of our condition and position, but we cannot even be sure of this. So far as we have obsery ed there is the most perfect opportunity for the rebel spies to wander through our camps. If one of these should succeed in describing to his master, Beauregard, the actual state of our army, he would be enabled to win the victory. he so much Oyes with baldly the tithe of the loss of his format' attempt. The scene which would follow any such an attempt would eclipse in confusion and disaster anything which the world has yet seen. A couple of armies of say a hundred thousand men each are now within sight of each other. If the rebel leader should strip his men of all accoutrements, except muskets HIM cartridges, force his way through any por tion of our lines to the landing, and seize every battery in his way, ho could an nihilate This whole army. We despair of anything like success in such an event. -- Our army, and all its arms and supplies. must fall a victim to the heedlessness of its leaders. Luckily the condition of Beauregard's men forbids his making an attack. Ile will probably let the golden moment slip. and If he dos he is inevitably lost. Gen. ifitllerk in the Field. Great confidence was universally ex pressed in the ability of 1 Halleck to reorganize and lead the armies of the Union to victory. Since his arrival here there has been ample opportunity and room to test his powers in this particular. It will only be to repeat an old story to say that these large expeetationn will hardly be realized. Probably no single man could do all that is requisite to restore the efficiency of this army; but it must be for the leader to call about him such men as he feels confident aro the, beet to he had for the business. We donbt ifhe has been very muccesitfill in his selections. We have now no less than seven major generals in the field, and a host of brigadiers whose services to the country in times past have been very great indeed. To these worthy soldiers the great work of advancing the cause of the country and the welfare of the soldiers is entrusted. Some of them mani fest their appreciation of the responsibil ity in a remarkable way.
