DIkILT _roof, THURSDAY MOHNING t ARRIX ld . _ our AND BNICHBOI JIOOD ORION The Diaaufacture of Tobacco: In view of the possible prolongation of the present war and the consequent itu p,ossibility of procuring a supply of man ufactured tobacco from the South, the manufacture of tobacco iu our own city becomes a matter of much interest. We yesterday visited the new double warehouse of W. D. Rinehart, Nos. 149 and 151 Wood street, embracing two entire four story buildings, every part of which are occupied z in the various processes of man ufacture. The firm i 3 among the olden in the city and has long been engaged in the manufacturing _branch of the business. Until the Ist inst., they occupied two ware houses,-ICo. 129 Wood street and No. 4:3 Irwin street, both of which have been va cated and the whole business brought under one roof. They manufacture allthe lump, plug and twist tobacco they sell, us well as fine cut chewing and cut and dry tobacco, and Rappee, Ilaccouba, Copenhagen and cotch Snuff. About one hundred hands are employed, in all men and boys: We are unable to give a detailed account of-the various processes of the manufac ture of tobacco, but will endeavor to make the mans operandi intelligible to our; readers. varieties of tobacco used aro th ; Kentucky:, Tennessee and Virginia, ob- e 1 Wiled principally from Louisville. It is first carefully sorted, according to the de scription of tobacco to be made, and is then conveyed, in lots, to the •'easing room," where it is saturated with the pre paration necessary to make the weed pala table. The substances entering into the composition of this preparation are all pure and coutain nothing iu the slightest de gree deleterious to health. After satu ration, the tobacco is stripped by boys from the stem and then distributed among the workmen in the different branches, who, by manipulation, and with the aid of ma- j chlnery, form it into rolls, lumps and twists. as required to make s's and pound lumps, diamond twist, black fat and ladies' natu ral twist. It is next t: ansferred to the' drying-room, where the pieces are spread on trays and ezposed to a certain degree of heat, generated from steam pipes, until in a proper couditiou for pressing. The press room is a large apartment in which are twentv-eight to thirty presses, each' capa hie ol containing a oox of to bacco. The lumps are carefully placed in one series of presses, in moulds, and a strong pressure applied, by means of le vers; the tobacco is then removed, placed -in the finishers and again pressed. The pings are soon tightly packed in stout oak boxes, which are enclosed in heavy wrought iron bands and again subjected to a Leavy 1 pressure. The boxes are now tightly locked so as' to prevent swelling and placed in a kiln in the rear of the buildings, whore the tabac oo is thoroughly sweated.- When removed 1 from the kiln the boxes are branded and ready for market. The system of sweat ing is an improvement ou the old furnace, ! the kiln employed being some ten feet I square and heated by a series of steam , pipes. The temperature is always kept high and the kiln can be heated to 250 degrees. The present product of the establish ment is about 20,000 to 25,000 pounds of manufactured tobacco monthly and so high is the reputation of the article that the firm are now soma two hundred boxes behind their orders and are making ar rangements to increase their capacity to enable them to fill all orders at once Their "Baltimore plug" is now in grew demand. All the machinery in the building is pro pelled by a ten-horse power engine all the apparatus for preparing mixtures, wash ing, Ake., is worked by steam and there are steam pipes throUghout the building, by which all the apartments are kept at the desired temperature. The tobacco for "cut and dry," fine cut chewing tobacco - and snuff is prepared on .the fourth floor and then transferred to the Cutting machine and snuff mill on the first story. All varieties of fine cut to bacco and snuffs are made here, of excel lent quality. The Scotch snuff of this firm has a high reputation and extensive sale. The firm have abandoned the manufac ture of cigars, but sell all kinds at fair rates. The Messrs. Rinehart have an immense trade, and are very popular with their cus• tomers, always furnishing a good article for a fair price. So long as they do this they must succeed in business. Clothing Stolen. On Tuesday morning an empty basket was found lying at the back door of the residence of Mr, McKibben, No. 426 Lib erty street, which was, on investigation, found to be one which had contained a large quantity of clothing and house linen, • supposed - to have been carried off the night before. Strangely enough the doors and windows wore all fastened as usual and there was nn clue to the thief. -Mr. McKibben was recently robbed of 5400 by some one who got into his house in a like mysterious manner. Convicted of Nuisance. In the Court of Quarter Sessions, yes terday, Thomas Farrow, of Elizabeth township, charged with keeping and main taining a nuisance, in the erection of a bridge across a public road in said town shtp, was convicted, sentenced to pay a ine of ten dollars, and abate the nuisance within ten days. The defendant, with others, was interested in a coal pit in that vicinity, and the bridge had been built to fiteilitate their business, but a freshet hay in4 rendered the road impassible at that point, they were indicted upon informa tion of the Supervisor of the township. .111. - YloweHy. Liberty does not involv e leave l' oe ev ery one to do as he pleases; on the contrary it requires every one to obey all legal enactment s . We understand these truths very well, when they come home to our selves. We may applaud revolutions in Europe, and appeal to them as glorious examples of the progress of the age, that proclaims, everywhere, the sovereignty of the people. But when, on the same prin ciple, attempts are made to break up this government, we soon hear that the laws can not be violated with impunity, that re hellion must he put down, that no conces sion should be to armed traitors. These are true sentiments of loyalty, which alone can save a nation. But why should that be wrong in Europe, which is right in America ? Whv should a general, who puts down rebellion iu Italy, be called a butcher, and he who suppresses it in America, be a patriot and a hero ? Why was it cruel in the Pope to gather together an army of volunteers to keep down his mutinous subjects, if it be noble and pat riotic, as it undoubtedly is, to volun teer to suppress an uprising which is sup ported by the greater portion of the South- ern people? Were we to apply to our own country . the principles so commonly used in judging on European revolutions, we ; should have allowed therebellion to destroy ! that Union in which are the strength and power of the nation. The very papers that are loudest in favor of the most extreme measures against our rebels, are most clamorous in defense of insurrection in It. sly. Sometimes, on the same pag e , may. ! hap the same column, you will find an I article advocating the confiscation of all the property, and hanging 4f the traitors at the South, and another landing Garibaldi ' to the skies. Nay, more, there was danger that the cause of the Union would be dis graced by the support of the arch rebel of Italy. So consistent is human nature, when , abandoning principles, it follows impulse or interest. The - doctrines of the Church are clear and well-defined. All just laws oflegitimate governments must be obeyed; revolution without cause, is rebellion.-.;.• This is true conservatism, the only system that can uphold order, or promote the pub lie good anywhere, most of all, in a free country. • • - - , • "Under any circumstances - , it would be proper in including a lecture of this kind, ; 'to inculcate the great lesson of Catholic ' morality, fidelity to the laws and to the Constitution under which we Ave. But if, while we enjoyed peace, these words might have appeared but a repetition of patrrot io sentiments suited for the conclusion of a discourse, at this momnet they have a far ' more important significance.
