Ina moment ' ttrterwards he was talking to the Colo eel, Boerstler, and as I afterwards learned represinled to him that escape or victory werbitsAlike impossible the force surrounding us being far too numerous for us to cope with in any way. Soon after this I saw Colonel Boerstler leave the Englishmen with thenther officers, and walk towards the twt.MP,tgons, which were now full of wounded. He appeared very sad and east down. For txmigliint or .two he stood apparengt irk, eep thought, then rousing Ither ci t, ame and lifted the wagon covet*" - , -, ted the num ber of wounded 2 , ; .• r :', looking at us for perhaps a minthirtkN said as though he was talking to hi , ;nelf, "Poor fel lows, if it wasn't for you I would never surrender." He their went back to the red-coat, who soon rode away, re• appearing a few minutes afterwards at the head of about three hundred British soldiers, to whom the regiment surren dered its arms. What direction these unwounded prisoners were taken I can not say, for I saw none of them for a couple of months afterwards. As for the wounded, a guard of about twenty soldiers, under the command of a ser geant, took us in charge and off we traveled, the rough motion of the wag on torte-ing some of the hurt almost be yond endurance. Jim Welsch, one of ar il' the bravest soldiers in o company was shot thro' the body, every time he breathed, something; Molt he sup posed to be bile, woul flow from the wound. Some one mai to him, "Jim, you are atonally wounded, and can't live long; you had better not swear so hard." Jim uttered a dreadful oath, and said he would long enough to shoot a dozen of scoundrels. Though very far from pious myself, I was dreadfully shocked at the awfallieroeneas of his curses. Poor Jim !he died that night, still hoping to meet he foe again on the field of battle. We had traveled about three miles when we came to a stream caned Ten Mile Creek, in the middle of which the driver stopped to water the horses The wagon had scarcely halted when a big Indian jumped upon the fore-wheel, put his head under the cover, close to my face, and took a deliberate survey of us all. Putting his hand on the head of the barrel he said; "wars in dat bar rel 7" 1 replied "provisions." He then said, "Provisions, vats dat r I answered, "salt pork." He looked at me very cunning and then said, "Damn ed lie. ' no salt pork; dat's whisky, me smell him. We have dat to-night."— After a few minuets I thought that if the Indians got that whisky there would not be many of us left alive in the morning. I then called the sergeant of the guard, told him what had occur red, and he fully coincided in my views. The wagon was stopped and with the hammer that runs through the double , . tree, I knocked the head out of the barrel, gave a drink to all the wounded able to take it; filled the canteens of the guard, and then after throwing it very near all out with the wagon bucket, with the help of the sergeant emptied the rest into the road. All this was done when no Indions were about, or it would not have been permitted, It was a long time till night, but at last it was dark and the wagons stop ped before a tolerably large frame barn. We were all taken out and lain on nice fresh hay, of which the barn was near ly full. This was scarcely accomplish,' ed when on there came two or three hundred Indians after the whisky.— When they found it had been destroyed they were in an awful rage, and it re. quired the utmost efforts of the guard, now considerably increased, to protect themselves and the prisoners. At last they gave a couple of terrible yells and off they went. It was more than a month after this before my hair felt safe on my head. .... We lay in this barn for about two weeks, during which time my wound was never drekiod. At last one day an Indian squaw took pity on me - add' washed out the bullet hole, with a , d e _ . cc:lotion of some herb which she prepar ed, and from that time I began to im. prove. A few days after this we were sent across the lake, to the hospital at Kingston, where such of the wounded as survived the horrors of the Barn, were treated in the best possible man ner. In six weeks I was transferred from the hospital to the jail, and there,' for the first time since the battle, I saw some of my comrades who had escaped without wounds. The fight in which I Was wounded and taken prisoner is known in history as the battle of Beaver Dams, though it was fought . at consider able distanca.fiom the plane known by that riame: T , HELINSOLLES GECIIINE PREPARATION. 12iaLmBokfro BUCHU for the Bladder. lazhißc4-res..B c.ri ti for the Kidneys. isquarßozps . ,Bucat , fot the Graves.
