THE ALLEGHENY PUBLIC BUILDINGS. —At a meeting of Allegheny Councils, on Monday evening, the Committee appoint ed for the purpose made a report, recom mending: first, that the City Hall build : ing shall consist of but two stories and , basement, leaving out the high and ex, pensive story allotted for a public ball, which is properly a subject for private en /terprise, and rarely forms a source of much revenue to a city corporation. This would still furnish ample accommodations for all the city officers, and would reduce the cost of the building some six thousand dollars, without any sacrifice of good taste. Second, that the plan for the City Market House be so modified as to form a quadrangular building, two hundred feet square, em bracing an area in the centre of ninetyaaix by ninety, six. feet. This will furnish soy. onty-six eligible butcher stalls, about the same number now rented in Pittsburgh, one hundred and forty valuable garden stands, and four coffee houses or fruit stands—all under one roof, well lighted and ventilated; with an additional room in the enclosed area for eighty additional garden stands, when required. By this modifica tion, the city would gain somewhat in the constructive design of the building, while saving about twenty per cent of the cost. The report was adopted in joint session and Councils adjourned, DROWN&D.-A young man named lien ry Wells, formerly of Syracuse, N. Y-, was accidentally drowned at Tidioute on Monday of last week, while crossing the river in a sluff. COITET AIANNIALED AND EXECUTED.- We learn, through a correspondent of the Wheeling Press, who writes from Kana wha county, Virginia, the particulars of the shooting of Jahn Terrill, of the leir=t Kentucky Regiment, by a Gorman named lithinhard Wehrle, while the former was endeavoring to procure some liquor at the bar of the latter. The soldier died in a few minutes, and the murderer was arrest ed and lodged in jail. He was saved f lynching with great difficulty, and on the following day was tried by court-martial, condemned and executed. He met his fate sternly refusing spiritual consolation, though confessing and deploring his act. Ho was a native of Germany, but had been in this country fourteen years. EYE AND EAR.—Numerous indeed have been the testimonials published by Dr. Von .Idoschzisker the eminent Oculist and Aurist, since his stay in our city, of the very successful cures of deafness and blind ness effected by him. If ever any one could claim pre-eminance in a speciality, Dr. Von Moscbzieker is certainly entitled to do so. lie cannot be expected to cure in every case, in fact from the ()Mast, when he first came to this city, he stated pub-, licly, that under no circumstances would be guarantee a cure; but if ever a case is curable, there is sufficient guarantee in what he has accomplished in cases that have bellied the beet physicians—that he is able to do all that can be done by the most profound medical science. We i efor to some new testimonials, and would ad vise those who require his services to lose no timd in consulting him. Dr. Von Moschzisker has not only given positive proof by his cures of what ho is able to do, but his writings on the maladies appertain ing to the.hly,e and Ear, show him to be an ardint student, and one who is master of his profession, and fully deserving all that can be said of him. WHAT ROCK OIL Is I—A scientific gen tleman named Benton, who has visited the Canadian oil springs, says: "It is a com mon idea, oven with geologists, that the oil has been produced from beds of CORI, but this oil field is sufficient of itself to show the incorrectness of the notion, The limestone found in this region, under the drift clay, I recognize as a member of the Hamilton group of the Davonian forma• lion, and as such is geologically many thousand feet below the lowest member of the carboniferous formation, below which workable eoal beds are never found. The truth is, that this oil, found so abundantly in Canada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and many other localities, is not coal oil, but coral oil. Stored away in cells, forming in the aggregate immense reefs, as it was collet ed from the impure waters of the early oceans by minute coral polyps, It has been driven by heat and pressure into reservoirs and crevices where man's ingenuity is discovering it day by day. I have in my possession many specimens of this fossil coral, with the oil plainly visible in the cells." KRNWOOD BOARDING SCHOOL FOR BOYS, will re-qpen Sept. IS. Terms reduced Address, itev. Jos. P. The battle commenced near Shanghai, in Barton caunty, and the rebels wore driven back with considerable loss, and pursued some forty miles. Montgomery then fell back on Greenfield.
