Sept. 24.—banahan, the murderer of Major Lewis, of the Pennsyl• violin 46, was tried yesterday and found guilty of murder. Ho will be hung as soon h fence is confirmed by the:author• ities at Washington. The accomplished soldier and executive Lacer Capt. Robert Williams, asaistant Adjutant General attached to Gen. Banks' division, has accepted the command of a regiment of Massachusetts Cavalry, six companies of which have already been raised and (quipped. It is expected that ho will leave here in about ten days. Tee latest advicos froth the upper Pato■ mac state that Capt. Carnes, formerly of the rebel army, was at Him No 4, with a conipa;y of loyal Virginians, performing picket duty at Williamsport and liagers-. town. Oar forces have been considerably strengthened. On the Virginia side of the river, lrore,, ; Harper's Ferry, Dam No 5, there were about 400 rebels of Header. son's, Ithinehardt'sl and Turner Ashby's corps. It is said that Capt. Henderson was recently killed in Jeffersoaeounty, by one of his privates named Miller. • There are about 500 foot sol , sin and about Martinsburg, but they wef. • ener_ . ally employed in taking up the tr:,.• .91 the Baltimore and Ohio Bailroad • Opcquan Bridge to Duffield's Station,4 distance of 12 miles and six miles above Harper's Ferry. The rebels have suc ceeded in carrying elf three of the now locomotives, and were engaged in taking to pieces four others. The locomotives, as well as the iron rails, have been drop. ped at Robinson's Station, the nearest point on the Harper's Ferry and Man. cheater: Railroad. Nothing had been done towards laying the track froirrWltiebefi. ter to Strasburg on the Manassas road.— The reason given is that they have no cross ties. At Uharleatown there were but two companies of malitia who are being used as laborers. At Winchester there are from 3,000 to 4,000 militia, half clothed, half shod and half starved ; they are also being used aq laborers. Their esndition is deplorable in the extreme, and they per. form the duties required of them with the greatest reluctance:. General Johnson was at Lee's Farquier Sulphur Springs, where he had been stay ing several days for the benefit of his health. Of this fact there can be no doubt. An Action at Point of Rocks. POINT OF ROCKS, Sept. 24.—T0-day an action took place at this point between - a part of the force under Col. Geary and 400 or 500 rebels on the Virginia side of the Potomac. The enemy were sheltered in the high point of Catoctin mountain, and in the houses at its base, but they were driven from every place by the bat% tory and rifles of Ccl. Geary's command. The houses were burned to the ground.— The U. S. troops sustained no injury. The conflict there of the 15th inst., resulted in a rebel loss of eighteen killed. One shell, alone, from our battery killed 8 soeessionists. Not a day or night passes but bodies of the rebels make their appear ance at some point on the secessioneide of the river, opposite Colonel Geary's line of guard, keeping his force in a constant state of bodily exercise. Ile only uses his artils tory when ho knows it will be effective. Report of Committee on the Late Railroad Accident. CINCINNATI, Sept. 26. --A committee of practical mechanics, appointed by the Chamber of Commerce to examine into and report the cause of the late accident on the 0, M. Road, whereby so many soldiers wore killed, - havo examined the bridge and their unanimous report was presented and adopted this afternoon. They report, af ter a careful examination of that bridge and others built at the same time and of the same materials, that they have unani mously concluded that the accident was not occasioned by any insufficiency of timbers or iron work. They attribute it to a broken rail found at the west end of the bridge,as the locomotive tender and one passenger car passed over safely. The latter car, as ap... pears from marks upon the timbers mis placed the iron and cross ties which threw the remainder of the cars from the track as they entered the bridge, thus preciptita• Ling them against the truss and cords, and breaking it down, and not from any weak ness or decay of timbers. Another Com mittee of practical men, appointed on the part of the road, made substantially the same report. - -...MITIIONT spirrgit CARDS, &o Passage of Important 1011* by the Kentucky Legislature.
