The Re publican or " People's Partyee as they call themselves, are largely in the majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives. — There ereet largenumber of rdeailbersand Sen , store already here, and they will doubtless be able tb organize by the election ; of Speakers in both - branches on the first day of the session. In this they will seta commendable example to Congress, who are still discreditabl q squabbling over the Speakerahip of the House, to the &eat detriment of the public business which they were sent to Washington to teaneact. The candidatei for Speaker of . the House are Mr. Lawrence of Dauphin and Mr. Thompson of Butler. Mr. Lawrence presided over the same body at the last session with great ability and credit, and no doubt is entertained of. his re-election at the present session. TheeSpeak erehip of the Senate is in moreeAcertainty. There are some five or six eitedidatss for this honor Gregg „of Centre, Finney of Crawford, Shaffer and Baldwin of Lancaster, Francis, of Memel, and Penney of Allegheny. The three'ferdier appear to have the lead in the race 50,16, but are running so evenly together tb • it is impossible to tell who will first reach , e winning post. Either of them would proba bly make a good presiding officer. -For the other offices to be filled, the candi dates are "Legion." Tbey swarm the Capi tol almost as thick as the locusts swarmed in Egypt at the time of the plague, visited by the vengeance of God upon that stiff-necked and rebellious people. Almost every Senator and member of the dominant party gas someespe cial favorite for his district for en office, from Clerk down to •• Poster " and •• Page! ' The thirst for public office is deplorable, and is one of the worst and most discreditable features of the politics of the day. The House, last session, being of the same politics, some of the old officers will nu doubt .be retained. The Senate, however, having last year beet Democratic, the old officers will .all be politely incited to retire: with, perhaps, .the single exception of Capt. Brady. who has .been retained for many succeesi vesessiont,w itb out regard to the poeitical character of the body, on account of his merit as a gellitet soldier in the war of 1819, and his creditable derortment as an officer and peculiar fitness for the duties that devolve upon him. With regard to the old officers, as s body, or individually, it may be truly said of them that they all performed their duties faithfully and well, and will retire with the respect of all the old Senators, and the regrets of many of them for their 1.003. There never was a better set of officers in the Senate. Without disparagement to the others, I may be permitted to say is word of your friend, Mr. F. M. Hutchinson, Assist tant Clerk of the last session. Without pro violas experience, be grasped at once a keuw ledge and mastery of his intricate duties, and performed them with an ability, energy and success, throughout the session, which was in the highest degree creditable: and his aecoin rocelating disposition and wurtecni. and gentle manly bearing rendered him justly popular. His generous heart, his lively wit, and his 30 mind laugh, will be missed by many of his old associates. Lung life to him and better em ploy meat- The two halls of the Capitol have been clew • ly carpeted, eleansmi and renevated general] e They really look gorgeous. Improvements have also been made in other parte of the build ing and grounds, which will prove great con veniences. I The hotels are pretty well filled up just now Coverly's and Herr s, eepecially. After " the axes" are all ground, however, many a disappointed and dejected aspirant will "absquatulate" very suddenly and very sorrow • fully, I have no doubt. "Brant's Ball," the targe new building in Market street, was formally opened today as a hotel and restaurant on the European plan of rentipg a room for lodgings, and taking meals when and where the lodgers please. It is open • od under the auspices of Cape E. C. Wiiinms, of this place, who is a gentleman of taste, and well calculated to make it a popular place of sojourn and resort. Even the pulpit has been desecrated to this work, and all this because Brown was making war on an institution common to fifteen of the sovereign States - of the Union, which it is admitedly their consti tutional right to have and enjoyin peace. Had Brown's crimes no connection with slavery, who does not know that Phillips Lied Cheever and Beechen and Wright and Smith would have turtles' from hint with loath ing and disgust. But it is said Brown was crazy about slavery. Ido not believe that, but if it were so it is no reason whole communities should become crazy about Brown. ' As to the Helper book to which you refer, I have not read It through ; butif theCompen. diem be li fair reflex of its contents, I hese no hesitation in saying that it is the most vicious politcal work-ever issued from the American press, calculateitif not intended, to do infinite mischief to our oeititutions It is bad enough that men of ability and position in the country should seek to engender strife between the States for partitae ends; but this wan Helper, as though instigated by the flesh and the devil, goes deliberutely about the work of seitablish• lug different classes of citizens within the acme State, and advising them to war on each other. He advises the non-slaveholding citizens to sile p<nd all intercourse, social and commercial, with his neighbors who hold slaves, arid - to treat hint with disgust and indignity, thus be. getting jealousy and hate among those who should be friends, and poisoning the very source of social fraternity To what viler end/ could any man devote ninseelft Nor will it do forthe sixty-seven Republican members of Congress 'who endorsed the compendium to this book. to say that they did so without being aware of .ts contents. They must come out and discard its ,l(wtrinei , tel p teen, if they would make amend far the roochief done to the peace of the country. ilut I fear they will not do so, for many of them owe their political prom inence to the favor of fanatical Abolitionists. As I said before. I am delighted with the proi.wedin,,o. f the ofeettnerin foor.....city, but, my dear friend, all the meetings °him kind that are likely to assemble will noteglre peace to the country, no long as a great party in the North. like the Republican., seek to gain con trol of the government by a sectional organi zation. and by maintaining doctrines and issues in derogation of the rights of the Southern Stake and offensive to their pride, as coequal members of the confederacy. Mr. Seward's "irrepressible conflict," for the mastery, be. tween the free and slave States, must be dis carded and denounced; and more, so much of the last Republican platform as rates negro slavery a relic of barbarism as base as Mormons ism, must also be abandoned. What could be more offensive than this similitude! An ins stiuition common to the South is formally ar. reigned by a party seeking Leggin the governs oleo, as a barbarism, and, of course, as much a crime as Mormonism, and the people of the United States are asked to endorse that senti ment at the polls --to adjudge that the citizens of fifteen States are criminals; and yet, the rep. resentatives of this party in Congress say they have :to connection with or sympathy for the Abolition- party in the North. This ha absurd; so long as they maintain such doctrines they must sympathize with the Abolitionists and the Abolitionists with them; and how could they hold any institution to be a barbarism and a crime and then env they do not intend to assail it everywhere. 'phi, truth is, we people in the North must mind our own business. We have no connection with slavery; no duties to perform about it, no rights at stake, no re. sponsibilities to bear, except to do what the Constitution enjoins about the rendition of In, gitive slaves. All that is necessary is to take the Constitu tion as a guide and recognize no issue in con. flict with that instrument; this done, and the free States aro separated from the slavery guess tion entirely, and peace will be restored to the whole country, except the croaking of a feeble band of disunionlsts at the South, who are nut likely to gain power enough to do harm. * i erlTul ENT CRISIS. Very truly, your ob't servant, • War. 11101.su in wineas ch i: es be, a 7 starting Blackberry Cuttings. Eds. Co. Gent.—According to promise send you the plan 1 pursued with my black berry cuttings. 1 had a hot-bed of fifty sash ready for cucumbers with a strong un der heat. I smoothed the surface under five sash at one and of the bed. I then spread the cuttings on the surface of the bed, and covered them about two inches with light mould: and then put on the sash and tended them the same as the cucum bers, and in five days they commenced coming up, and in ten days the bed "was covered with briars from one to six inches high. I now took the sash off in warm and moist days, and put them on again at night,• and by April 20th I had plants eighteen inches high, which was twenty days from this time I started them ; and on the 22d of April I set out a few of the strongest, and although there were several very hard.frosts they started and grew finely. May 9th I set I out another lot which did very well. May 20th, I set out another lot which on account of the ground being too dry, about half died—the remainder started slowly. June Ist, I set out another lot which did well. Now for the result, (Nov Ist)—the first planting will average four feet high and very branohy and strong ; the second is ful ly as good as the first planting ; that third planting, what is standing, will avkr erage two feet ; the last planting is fully as as good and all standing. To make a plantation, the cuttings should be procured in. the fall or fore part of winter, and. tied in bunches and buried in the cel lar, in order to have them ready in time; and the hot-bed should be put up the first or March with a good strong heat, the same BS for cabbage. The bed' should be kept, itell aired and moderately Moist, and the 'etittlini (about three inches long) spread ..rat4er thin to make strong, plants.
