The Wreok of the Argo. Sr. Joann, N. 8., July I.—All the passen gers who were on board the steamship Argo, which was wrecked,ln Trepauey Bay a few days ago, have arrived here safe. The steam tugs left again to-day to bring up the crew and what was saved from the wreck. The following are the particulars of the ills , aster: Between three and four 'o'clock on Tuesday morning, the Argo made Cape Pine, bearing twelve miles distant from' the coast. The pilot, captain, crow and all the other offi cers were called on deck at the sight of land. The course was changed and made northeast by east; this should have cleared her fifteen miles from Cape Race. About a quarter past four o'clock a very dense fog Came up. At halt past five the captain spoke to a fishing schooner. He stopped the engines and reversed -them, and hailing the schooner, he asked; Where are you fishing? Answer—On the Eastern side of Trepassoy Bay, a mile and a half or two miles off. The Captain ordered the helm to bo put hard a-port, the engines to go on in full speed, and the vessel to be kept S. 4. E. by the standard compass. This should have taken her clear of the land. The Captain and all the officers were on deck. The officer in charge at the wheel gave the .5 ., r de r, Steady," as the ship brought up to her S. S. E. course. At that moment breakers were seen, and the engines stopped and reversed at full speed. Before the, ship got sternway upon her, she grounded her bow on the rocks at Fresh Water Point, eight miles [nom Tropastey. The boats were lowered and got ready, when the passengers embarked with but little confusion. The women and children were cared for tint. Anchors were then passed out at the prow and stern, the coals thrown overboard, the forward boilers blown off, and every exertion made to get her off, but without avail. The captain now sent off the pilot to Trapassey to get assistance, when the steamers Dauntless and Blue Jacket were despatched immediately.' Sails, etc., were sent ashore, tents made to protect the reason gars, and when the provisions and baggage coald possibly be got at, they ware also sent. The fishermen plundered the ship. A hun. drod came around her on hearing the signal guns. They cut away her masts, and cum , pletely skinned her. At four r. et. the ship filled, fell on her beam ends, and sunk in six fathoms of water. The baggage belonging to many of the passengers was lost. There was no house within eight miles of the shore whore she struck. At SP. NI. a boat returned from Trepassey with assur ances that two steamers wore on the way from St. Johns to assist them. Tuesday night was passed with a tolerable degree of comfort. On Wednesday the steam ers arrived and brought off the passengers and a part of the baggage. They return this after noon for the crew, taking with them soldiers and police to recover that portion of the prop erty stolen from the ship; they can got divers also to go and got out anything that can be recovered from the wreck. The passengers are all quartered and provided for here. They will be sent on as soon as arrangements can be made. New York Items. NEW YORK, July I.—The Mr.-E. C. Smith, of Wall street, whose name appears among the victims of the disaster on the Michigan South ern Railroad, was the porter of the Marine Bank. Ile was about thirty years old, was a widower, and has left a number of children. Tho American Express Company have promptly made an arrangement with the agont9 of the steamship Glasgow, which Icives this port to-morrow at twelve o'clock It., to call at St. Johns, N. F.; and take the passengers of the Argo, who will be forwarded to their desti nation. The business in stocks this morning was still more unsatisfactory to holders, the prices un dergoing a further decline. The depression is again most marked on railroad shares, though the bettor class of securities are not exempt from the dull and heavy , feeling observable throughout the market. The heaviest depreci ation was on the 'Michigan guaranteed and Galena, which are each iEul per cent. loWer. The former is pressed or sale, in view of the heavy damages in wliiich the company aro likely to be involved by the serious Accident at Adrian, at a time when it is least able to pay them.
