Court of Quarter SCSSiOIIII, &c. ,
Before Judges M'Clure, Maynard, Adams
and Parker.
FRIDAY, July 1, 1859.
Terry M'Laughlin, convicted of stealing
$3O from a countryman in the Diamond, at
the last term of court, to whom a now trial
was granted, was again tried and acquitted, the
Commonwealth producing no evidence.
Michael Flynn, a lad under age, was con
victed of ~ickiug a woman's pocket, in the
crowd which surrounded Devore s undertaker
shop, on Grant street, while the body of Mary
Delaney lay there, on Saturday last, and sent
to the House of Refuge.
Alex. Tiernan plead guilty to the charge of
selling liquor without license, and was sentenc
ed to pay a fine of $lO and costs, or undergo an
imprisonment of thirty days in default.
In a similar case against Sarah Washington,
the Commonwealth failed to prove the fact,
and the jury found a verdict of not guilty,
without leaving the box.
Jackson Mleartney, convicted of highway
robbery at the laSt term of Court, and who
was granted a new trial through a mistake of
the Court in reading evidence to the jury, was
again placed un trial. The Commonwealth
offered no evidence, and the jury acquitted
him. 'He was, however, held for sentence,
having been convicted, at the same term, of
passing counterfeit money.
Benjamin Goliah Sampson, a colored gen
tleman of Allegheny city, was tried for steal
ing a barrel of dour, but the case not being
very clear, he was acquitted.
Hardware and Insurance.
There would seem to be little connection be
tween the two, but as " politics make strange
bedfelloWS," so sometimes do business combi
nations. The firm of Logan - At Gretg,'whose
advertisement will. be found elsewhere, has
long sustained a high reputation. They are
dealers in iron and importers of hardware of
every description, and have the control of a
large trade. These gentlemen have recently
associated with them Mr. Geo. S. Bryan,.fort
merly of .Laricaster, Pa., and, under the style
of Gee. S. Bryan & ill act as commis
sion merchants for.the Co., gni° of pig iron, blooms,
&c., for which their long oxperienee in the
iron NsitiOs peculiarly fits them. Their ref
-
inners' wit; Of)* hest ObaraCtd, and 'parties
having business of that do;tcription could not
place it in more trustworthy hand.% The same
firm are also agents for the Enterprise Insur
ance Company, of Philadelphia, ono of the
sound institutions of the country, as will be
seen by the names of the Directors. Messrs.
Bryan & Co. will take risks on buildings,
merchandise, furniture, &c., at fair rates.
These are well-known and rhliabe firms, and
we cheerfully commend them to the public,
who may find them at No. 52 Wood street.
Evcuastozi TicsKrs WisTwAte.D.—On the

stopping by their time table at stations to which
tickets are sold. By the above it will be seen
that persons desiring . ' to spend the day away
from the city can leave at almost any hour, and
return when they see proper.
ANTONIO AND WILDER'S CIRCUS arrived in
the city yesterday and passed in procession
through the streets, presenting a creditable ap
p6aritnee. in 'the evening they gave a per
formance on the Trimble lot, which •was well
attended. This company has always sustained
a good reputation for novelty and variety,
and is even better this season than last. They
have a host of first class performers, and :the
trappings are' perfect., so as to give the best
possible effect. 'To-day they give two per
formances, afternoon and evening, and we
expect to see the pavilion crowded on both
occasions.

The Ne Plus Ultra of Shingle Machines.
The extraordinary achievements of steam
power, combined with American mechanical
genius, engage .the attention and admiration of
the ago. Every day elicits something newand
useful from the inexhaustable resources of hu
man ingennity. - _ Machinery is now, applied to
almoso. stray dephitinent othahor - and the
handicraft of man is far outstripped simple
conabinatioris 'of wheel's, pinions, knNes,chiaels,'
spindles, &-c., &c., erected into the dignity of a
complete machine. Theis) truths are exempli
fied in an invention of remarkable efficiency
and utility, 'Called Coffin's Shingle Machine.
The machine is constructed to make from sixty
to eighty shingles per minute. It makes bar
rel heads, looking, glass backs, veneertng, cigar
boxes, &c: Its simplicity, durability, utility
and the excellence of its work will make it a un
venal favorite. It is duo to the public that the
press should exert its influence to usher into
general use all improvements ,and: inventions
that tend to perfect the quality and cheapen the
articles of their manufacture, that the public
may speedily . secure their benefit. In the above
machine, a circular horizontal saw is used, and
the block so adjusted that it cuts lengthwise
of the wood, and as smooth as it planed; and
in sawing shinglea,ai
regular taper s given from
end to end, of any desired thickness. It will
save at least twenty per cent. of timber over
any other sawing machine, and fifty per cent.
over any riving and shaving machine. The
whole machine combined, forsawing and joint
ing, can be furnished for $l5O. It may bo
worked by steam, water or horse power. The
patentee is S. C: COth'n, of this city, to whom
all letters may be addressed.

The Wreok of the Argo.
Sr. Joann, N. 8., July I.—All the passen
gers who were on board the steamship Argo,
which was wrecked,ln Trepauey Bay a few days
ago, have arrived here safe. The steam tugs
left again to-day to bring up the crew and
what was saved from the wreck.
The following are the particulars of the ills
, aster: Between three and four 'o'clock on
Tuesday morning, the Argo made Cape Pine,
bearing twelve miles distant from' the coast.
The pilot, captain, crow and all the other offi
cers were called on deck at the sight of land.
The course was changed and made northeast
by east; this should have cleared her fifteen
miles from Cape Race. About a quarter past
four o'clock a very dense fog Came up. At
halt past five the captain spoke to a fishing
schooner. He stopped the engines and reversed
-them, and hailing the schooner, he asked;
Where are you fishing?
Answer—On the Eastern side of Trepassoy
Bay, a mile and a half or two miles off.
The Captain ordered the helm to bo put hard
a-port, the engines to go on in full speed, and
the vessel to be kept S. 4. E. by the standard
compass. This should have taken her clear of
the land. The Captain and all the officers
were on deck. The officer in charge at the
wheel gave the .5 ., r de r, Steady," as the ship
brought up to her S. S. E. course. At that
moment breakers were seen, and the engines
stopped and reversed at full speed. Before the,
ship got sternway upon her, she grounded her
bow on the rocks at Fresh Water Point, eight
miles [nom Tropastey. The boats were lowered
and got ready, when the passengers embarked
with but little confusion. The women and
children were cared for tint. Anchors were
then passed out at the prow and stern, the
coals thrown overboard, the forward boilers
blown off, and every exertion made to get her
off, but without avail. The captain now sent
off the pilot to Trapassey to get assistance,
when the steamers Dauntless and Blue Jacket
were despatched immediately.' Sails, etc., were
sent ashore, tents made to protect the reason
gars, and when the provisions and baggage
coald possibly be got at, they ware also sent.
The fishermen plundered the ship. A hun.
drod came around her on hearing the signal
guns. They cut away her masts, and cum
, pletely skinned her.
At four r. et. the ship filled, fell on her beam
ends, and sunk in six fathoms of water. The
baggage belonging to many of the passengers
was lost. There was no house within eight
miles of the shore whore she struck. At SP.
NI. a boat returned from Trepassey with assur
ances that two steamers wore on the way from
St. Johns to assist them.
Tuesday night was passed with a tolerable
degree of comfort. On Wednesday the steam
ers arrived and brought off the passengers and
a part of the baggage. They return this after
noon for the crew, taking with them soldiers
and police to recover that portion of the prop
erty stolen from the ship; they can got divers
also to go and got out anything that can be
recovered from the wreck. The passengers are
all quartered and provided for here. They
will be sent on as soon as arrangements can be
made.
New York Items.
NEW YORK, July I.—The Mr.-E. C. Smith,
of Wall street, whose name appears among the
victims of the disaster on the Michigan South
ern Railroad, was the porter of the Marine
Bank. Ile was about thirty years old, was a
widower, and has left a number of children.
Tho American Express Company have
promptly made an arrangement with the agont9
of the steamship Glasgow, which Icives this
port to-morrow at twelve o'clock It., to call at
St. Johns, N. F.; and take the passengers of
the Argo, who will be forwarded to their desti
nation.
The business in stocks this morning was still
more unsatisfactory to holders, the prices un
dergoing a further decline. The depression is
again most marked on railroad shares, though
the bettor class of securities are not exempt
from the dull and heavy , feeling observable
throughout the market. The heaviest depreci
ation was on the 'Michigan guaranteed and
Galena, which are each iEul per cent. loWer.
The former is pressed or sale, in view of the
heavy damages in wliiich the company aro
likely to be involved by the serious Accident at
Adrian, at a time when it is least able to pay
them. Chien° and Rock Island was among
the steadiest on the list, being sparingly otter
ed at 50f; Illinois Central continuos to im
prove, selling to-day at 621 cash, and 62f seller,
thirty days. The day is a busy one in the
money market, more so perhaps than at any
time of the past year. The changing of loans
is active, and a good demand is observable
throughout the market, though it is noticeable
that no stringency appears in any quarter, and
fresh loans are easily effected at six per cent.
The Saxonia for hamburg, took $lOO,OOO in
specie on freight. The steamers Ocean Queen
and Kangaroo, for :Europe to-morrow, will
take in specie $1,300,000.
Balloon Ascension at Bt. Louis.
Sr. Louts, July I.—The lint grand experi
mental air voyage to the seaboard, took place
from Washington square, this evening, Pro
fessors Wise, Lamountain and (lager having
made a successful ascension in the mammoth
balloon Atlantic at six o'clock forty minutes.
The inflation was witnessed by thousands of
citizens. The square outside of the enclosure
was thronged by excited spectators. • Mr.
Ilyde, reporter of the Iteptibl ken, accompanied
the iuronaute, but should his weight prove an
obstruction to the passage of the balloon, ho
will be landed at a favorable point and this
course will be repeated if necessary to the ac
complishment of the end in view, until all the
party excepting ono, together with the boat, are
bolded, Mr. Wise being determined to reach
the Atlantic coast. if inch a thing be possible.
A package containing letters, St. Louis pa
pers and western exchanges WBS sent by the U.
8. Express which will be forwarded to the
agent at New York from whatever place the
mranaut may alight. It is expected to reach
some point on the seaboard between 9 and 12.
o'clock. to-morrow. Mr. Brooks, manager of
the St. Louis Museum, preceded the main
party a few minutes in his balloon Comet, de
signing to accompany the Atlantic a short dis
tance and return in the morning. The weather
was favorable. The balloon took a direction
towards Lako Erie, but when last seen, was
pursuing a course almost due east,

WAIIIIIIIGTOL CITY, July I.—Capt. Van
Vlcit U. S. Assistant quarter. Master, has sub
mitted to the War Department a reply to the
"barges recently preferred against him for al
leged misconduct, in connection with the pur
chase of mules for the army, and the Secretary
of War after mature deliberation of the same,
has decided that the explanations and testi
mony render any further notice of the charges
uncalled for and. unnecessary.
The Postmaster General has ordered of G.
F. Nesbett, of New York, the contractor one
million of stamped envelopes with the now self
sealing improvement. They will be furnished
to the public) at Ave cents per hundred, more ,
than are charged for tho present patterns.
The statement contained in a letter from
Mr. Floyd, and extensively publisheil l charg
ing the Secretary of War with being personal
ly interested in the contracts with Holliday
and others, for supplying flour to the troops in
Utah, is wholly destitute of truth. The ar
rangement Tor this service was made in . the

with the prr officer, and by which contract
ed with the &ormer mode at least 5100,000 are
saved to the government.
