Shall every idol perish To moles and bats be thrown, And every prayer be offered To God in Christ alone? CexTrRE Hair, Shall Jew and Gentile, meeting From many a distant shore, Around one alter kneeling, One common Lord adore? Shall all that now divides us Remove and pass away, Like shadows of the morning Before the blaze of day? S. a1 all that now unites us lore sweet and lasting prove, A closer bond of union, In a blest land of love ? Shall war be learned no longer, Shall strife and tumult cease, All earth His blessed Kingdom, The Lord aud Prince of Peace? 0, long expected dawning, Come with thy cheering ray ! FARM TALK. | Farmers, let us begin to talk about our own business; we do too little of | that and too much of the other, 1 be- | lieve that even we Centre county far- mal the Reporter will Tet us erowd in some- | tics, I don’t see why we should not | try the game. Lon’t be afraid, you | we'll just put on paper what we would | say to our neighbor, sitting in qur own | i } but the mavuscript—to I'red, he has got plenty of dots, and all kinds of | them, and sure enough he'll just put | them where they will look best; no | doubt for an extra subscriber, a buash- | el of apples or something of that kind, | he would make the spelling all right | ton, if it should happen to be mixed. Now if you see this in the paper, you may conclude that he is willing to print this anyhow, and I may as well go on a little further and say what I really want tosay. I am a young far- mer, a green hand, as doubtless you have inferred already. My neighbors all raise corn, I do too; I raised several Kinds, which 1 got from my neighbors and each one said Ais kind was the best, aud at hus- king I thought so too; but, as I used to figure in other things, I thought I I raised four kinds—white, mulatto, big vel- might-figure in the corn too, low, and a cross between mulatto and | low Dent. : All is equally dry, and a hundred pounds on the cob, of each, carefully weighed, then shelled, produced as fol- lows: White, £73 Ib s. grain, 12% Ibs cob. Mulatto, 8 ** "+ 93 « « Big yellow 72} 29% Yel. Dent, 81} * 184 While the yield in bushels was ap- parently the same, yet the weighing shows a different result, hence I would conclude that the white is the best, be- cause it yields the largest per ceut. of grain and I have, quite a preference for the grdih=>€ob are well. enough as long as the kerhel are on. As the vellow Dent eomes next, it goes to show that mizing even with the Mu- latto, don’t get ahead of white. But I also came to anather conclu- sion : that if corn yields 80 ver cent of grain, it don’t matter whether we shell or not for market, if either kind is ta- ken, it will just hold out; if more than 30 per cent, we gain by shelling; if less, we loose. Measuring with the “basket i€ a poor way of measuring. Now farmers, if I'am wromg, right me, by writing to the right paper. And, kind Reporter, I am much obliged for the space; it does look: better this way than if it were left blank. Dowx tHE VALLEY.
