Tho truths of oar fiaantual end military situation niurt n-c-r he kept back. There ma«i be no attempt t« put down tbe free expresses of publie opinion. Affrighted at the roio thoy bav« fraught, the authors of our oalamii ics at the North and the South insist that this war has caused by unavoidable contest about slavery. This has been the subject and not tbe can*# of the controversy. We are to look for toe causes of the w*r in the pervading disregard of the cbhgaticos of the laws and the ooDiti tuitor and disregard for the constituted au thorities, and, above aU, ia the local preju dices wbieh have grown up fn\two portions of Stales—the iwo kjtrsmes cf our aotratry.
