His great fitness for the post was fully elucidated during the canvass llaree years ago, and has been fully confirmed-by the hOnesty and' ability he' has "displayed in the mapagement of the office. - His unanimous nomination is proof of the great satisfaction he has given in the discharge of his' duties, and the entire reliance the peoplej place in his integrity and his principles. Gen. WM. S. Ross, of Luzerne county, the candidate for ISurveyor General, is highly spoken of. I have no desire at this time to Make any speech to you. I hope the deliberritions of this body will be conducted with'Unanimity and kindness, and that we' will endeavor by our manner here to show an example of what should be the conduct of the people of the United States: I hope, as we are and ever have been known as.the Keystone of the Federal Arch, and as we have borne the burden • of that arch upon our shoulders, I hope our deliberation's to-day will show our continued willingness to give our arms and hearts to the maintei*ca of the Union until the last -rebel isnitabdued by the bayonet or the sword.. (Applause.) I trust that Pennsylvania, by her repre sentatives here to-day, VII, speak a voice,. • and such a voice in the language. of. the scripture as shall give no uncertain sound, that none may need inquire where Penn sylvania stands. (Applause.) I trust that. Pennsylvania, through her accredited re presentatives here, will tell the loyal peo- ple over all her hills - and through all her valleys that she has been the Keystone of the Federal Arch, and will still bear upon her brawney shoulders the responsibility of maintaining it over the dead "bedies of , all its foes. I trust that our deliberations will be conducted in calmness and dispas-, stonaiely, but with great firmness. Ordi narily, conventions have assembled in this hall for discussion, and for the settlement of mere party issues—party issues that are dead, and I trust buried, never to have a resurrection. It is no party issue brings us here, but to inquire whether we have a country, and if we bade one, whether we are willing to maintain it at the peril of ouHives. As we have given the loyal blood o f Pennsylvania upon every battle field of ihe Revolution, and upon every battle field of this internal struggle, I trust we wilt baptise every rebel acre with the blood of our soldiers, until the last rebel' is sub clued, and nd man shall live here who dare say any Confederate State, but the United States of America. (Applause.) I said I have no speech to make to you. We come here from all departments of- industry, re presenting all the varied interests of a great State, and of course there must be differences of opinion, upon minor ques tions. I invoke the kindness and forbear ance of the various gentlemen who conste- Ante this respectable body, that they will bear with:each other and endeavor to har monize. , With these remarks I would sug gest that it is now in order to make nomi nations for temprary secretaries: SPEECH OF HON. JOHN C. 'MOE Judge KNOX, - formerly of the Supreme Court, and District Attorney daring the ad ministration of Gov. P4OGICEI, a man of ability and independence--one of those men who gave what intellectual strength and:power was formerly possessed by the Democratic party—was elected permanent Chairman of the Convention, and, on taking his seat, made the following speeoh The gentlemen of the Convention will please -to accept-my - thanks for their kind partiality in selecting me to preside over their delibera ations. "I rejoice to be here to-day, acting in concert with the true and loyal men of Penn , sylvania, regardless of former politteal wok. ciatione, and recognizing at title eventful time as the only true tests of fellowship and com minion, love of eortutry, devotion to the-Amer, ican Union, a fixed and unalterable determin ation to uphold and sustain the Government of the United States, and to resist to the death the enemies of that overnment whenever and wherever found. [Applause.) Yes, gentlemen, it is to me a setae of great pleasure to be able to declare that, in my judgment, the men at the head of our Nation al and State administrations are, in this ter rible crisis, doing their whole duty, and Are consequently entitled to our entire confidence and cur warmest support. I envy not that man who . cannot now look beyond the'platform of his party, to the standard of his country. The question is not now which political party shall administer- the government, or whatrnen shall fill its offices, but it is whether there shall be offices to fill or &government to administer, and until this momentous quea-_ Lion is settled, for one, I shall ant with the men who are the most in earnest in their ef forts to destroy this rebellion, and the meet determined, signally to punish the rebels, their eiders and abettors. I repeat, gentlemen, that I have great con- Science in Abraham Lincoln, and his chosen counsellors, and I must be permitted to say, that especially do I confide in the clear head, coned mind and honest heart of the Secretary of War, Edwin 31. Stanton, our own Immedi ate representative In the Cabinet. I say this with a full kiowledge that of late a systematic attempt has been made to bring this officer into disreptite, and to cause his re moval from the high and responsible position which he now so ably fills.. Every disappointed man, whether for the opportunity. of serving his country with a title prefixed to hie name, or 'for furnishing the middens of war, at large profits, visits his vengeance upon the head of Air. Stanton. The friends of this officer , cannot, of course, complain of the most careful scrutiny into his official conduct, and do by no means deny that he may, lik others; have committed mistakes; ..yet, when it is seen that the mast unmeeitired ribose is continually lavished upon, him and his acts; that he is held responsible for conaequen cos, to prevent which has been en tirely beyond his power, and charged with disasters arising from movements, which be neither counselicof nor directed, It becomes necessary to look for the causes. which have induced, and the motives which have prompted those attacks. throne the Creator -- of the - univenkt: [Al pha's.] lest as, my friends, beware of the devices of thase hollow-hearteW,: pretended friends;and lst ths•true men of the nation', whether in the tentedfield, or the council chamber be upheld and sustained, and let our denun ciations be reserved for thoseerho are endeavoring to de stroy the government and disunite the Stater.
