At anteeting of the Citizen - a of this
arrangements were _made to hold a<. Maas
Meeting of all the lOyal citizens of. Ulla
county, on nett Thursday; the 24th, fier
—Like purpose of promoting enlistmente, and
upholding the hands et the Government in
its efforts , to'oveithrok this gieat rebellion.
We trust that, as farina possible, the, Mas
ses of the, people _will lay aside their bus?-
miss, and meet together to consult ; and to
act in relation to the l itnportant crisis now
impending. .The people alone can save the
country, and . by their united and patriotic
voice they can greaq strengthen the stern
resolves of the President and his ' Cabinet
to destroy, utterly reel out, this unhallow
ed rebellion:
The Republican State Convention has
presented a good ticket for the suffrages of,
the loyal people. !
Hen. Thos. g..C.: T WEILLS.N t the present
Auditor General,, is too Well known to need
any description frorri us. His great fitness
for the post was fully elucidated during the
canvass llaree years ago, and has been fully
confirmed-by the hOnesty and' ability he'
has "displayed in the mapagement of the
office. - His unanimous nomination is proof
of the great satisfaction he has given in
the discharge of his' duties, and the entire
reliance the peoplej place in his integrity
and his principles.
Gen. WM. S. Ross, of Luzerne county,
the candidate for ISurveyor General, is
highly spoken of. The Harrisburg Tile
-
lraph says that-he iis one of the most re
liable, upright and :ipatriotic men in the
Commonwealth. His record is a chapter
teeming with the evidences of his faithful
ness in the of the trusts hereto
fore reposed in him by the people, and iris
position in this crisis, proves the sincerity
of the patriotic motites by whiCh he is un
questionably prompted. Acting with the
Democratic party - until that organization
byname divided by the machinations and
plots of men who wire conspiring for the
success of rebellion, clinging to that party
until partizanship I ,becaniti tantamount to
treason, he threw Pf its yoke, and is now
among the gamest find most prominent de
fenders if -the Union. As:inch' he has
been' presented. to tip people of Pennsyl
vania,
for election; to an important State
office, and as such, to, his election will add
to the ultimate triuMph of die cause of the
Union.
Let Us Have a MOre Vigorous Policy.
'While mir soldiers, very many of them,
are employed to piot‘st aecesh property,
andArive back into eLsigry the black loy

their men to their twork of destruction, in
the following langaage:,
"De not wait ari hoar, lose no time in

enemy l . ,the shortest road. Join the first

This is from Gen. Hindman'i address to
the People of Arkansas. When-'we' have
each resolved and infuriated men to deal
with, shall we fritter away our time, our
property, and the dives and health of our
soldiers, by a rose-water policy, that only
encourages and helps the rebels to hold on?
Away with`ouch a policy. Give as vigor.

curse, a deiolatlort to them, ta freedom to

of so losing a game.
lion. David Wilmot.
Therm/illations adopted by the 114/publican
State Convention aro eminently patriotic
and earnest; and; it
_was very fitting to
crown them with a complete endorsement
- of that fearless and manly Pennsylvanian,
Davto WILMOT.' Well did the`Convention

such force as to awe the rebel chief, and send
him back to his lair.- We fear he has too

R CHAIRMEN
SPEECHES OF TH
Tuna. ',1. - M.tirsithrz, Esq., of this county,
on taking the Chair as temporary Presi
dent, sddriased the Convention as 'follows:
I beg to return my thanks to the Conven
tion for this honor. I have no desire at this
time to Make any speech to you. I hope the
deliberritions of this body will be conducted
with'Unanimity and kindness, and that we'
will endeavor by our manner here to show
an example of what should be the conduct
of the people of the United States: I hope,
as we are and ever have been known as.the
Keystone of the Federal Arch, and as we have
borne the burden • of that arch upon our
shoulders, I hope our deliberation's to-day
will show our continued willingness to give
our arms and hearts to the maintei*ca of
the Union until the last -rebel isnitabdued
by the bayonet or the sword.. (Applause.)
I trust that Pennsylvania, by her repre
sentatives here to-day, VII, speak a voice,.
• and such a voice in the language. of. the
scripture as shall give no uncertain sound,
that none may need inquire where Penn
sylvania stands. (Applause.) I trust that.
Pennsylvania, through her accredited re
presentatives here, will tell the loyal peo-
ple over all her hills - and through all her
valleys that she has been the Keystone of
the Federal Arch, and will still bear upon
her brawney shoulders the responsibility
of maintaining it over the dead "bedies of ,
all its foes. I trust that our deliberations
will be conducted in calmness and dispas-,
stonaiely, but with great firmness. Ordi
narily, conventions have assembled in this
hall for discussion, and for the settlement
of mere party issues—party issues that are
dead, and I trust buried, never to have a
resurrection. It is no party issue brings
us here, but to inquire whether we have a
country, and if we bade one, whether we
are willing to maintain it at the peril of
ouHives. As we have given the loyal
blood o f Pennsylvania upon every battle field
of ihe Revolution, and upon every battle
field of this internal struggle, I trust we
wilt baptise every rebel acre with the blood
of our soldiers, until the last rebel' is sub
clued, and nd man shall live here who dare
say any Confederate State, but the United
States of America. (Applause.) I said I
have no speech to make to you. We come
here from all departments of- industry, re
presenting all the varied interests of a
great State, and of course there must be
differences of opinion, upon minor ques
tions. I invoke the kindness and forbear
ance of the various gentlemen who conste-
Ante this respectable body, that they will
bear with:each other and endeavor to har
monize. , With these remarks I would sug
gest that it is now in order to make nomi
nations for temprary secretaries:
SPEECH OF HON. JOHN C. 'MOE
Judge KNOX, - formerly of the Supreme
Court, and District Attorney daring the ad
ministration of Gov. P4OGICEI, a man of ability
and independence--one of those men who
gave what intellectual strength and:power
was formerly possessed by the Democratic
party—was elected permanent Chairman of
the Convention, and, on taking his seat, made
the following speeoh
The gentlemen of the Convention will please
-to accept-my - thanks for their kind partiality
in selecting me to preside over their delibera
ations. "I rejoice to be here to-day, acting in
concert with the true and loyal men of Penn
, sylvania, regardless of former politteal wok.
ciatione, and recognizing at title eventful time
as the only true tests of fellowship and com
minion, love of eortutry, devotion to the-Amer,
ican Union, a fixed and unalterable determin
ation to uphold and sustain the Government
of the United States, and to resist to the death
the enemies of that overnment whenever and
wherever found. [Applause.]
I rejoice especially to - be here;beeause I can
in this way evince my desire to strengthen
the hands of that honest man and patriotie
- -
statesman, the President of the United Stams,
to cheer him on, and to bid him and his
trustworthy counsellors God speed in their
noble labors for the mintenance of our Gov
ernment and the preservatton of our country.
[Applause.)
Yes, gentlemen, it is to me a setae of great
pleasure to be able to declare that, in my
judgment, the men at the head of our Nation
al and State administrations are, in this ter
rible crisis, doing their whole duty, and Are
consequently entitled to our entire confidence
and cur warmest support.
I envy not that man who . cannot now
look beyond the'platform of his party, to the
standard of his country.
The question is not now which political
party shall administer- the government, or
whatrnen shall fill its offices, but it is whether
there shall be offices to fill or &government to
administer, and until this momentous quea-_
Lion is settled, for one, I shall ant with the
men who are the most in earnest in their ef
forts to destroy this rebellion, and the meet
determined, signally to punish the rebels,
their eiders and abettors.
I repeat, gentlemen, that I have great con-
Science in Abraham Lincoln, and his chosen
counsellors, and I must be permitted to say,
that especially do I confide in the clear head,
coned mind and honest heart of the Secretary
of War, Edwin 31. Stanton, our own Immedi
ate representative In the Cabinet.
I say this with a full kiowledge that of late
a systematic attempt has been made to bring
this officer into disreptite, and to cause his re
moval from the high and responsible position
which he now so ably fills..
Every disappointed man, whether for the
opportunity. of serving his country with a
title prefixed to hie name, or 'for furnishing
the middens of war, at large profits, visits
his vengeance upon the head of Air. Stanton.
The friends of this officer
,
cannot, of course,
complain of the most careful scrutiny into his
official conduct, and do by no means deny that
he may, lik others; have committed mistakes;
..yet, when it is seen that the mast unmeeitired
ribose is continually lavished upon, him and
his acts; that he is held responsible for
conaequen cos, to prevent which has been en
tirely beyond his power, and charged with
disasters arising from movements, which be
neither counselicof nor directed, It becomes
necessary to look for the causes. which have
induced, and the motives which have prompted
those attacks.

Oar fathers constructed this government by
long suiTering, and under great and terrible
privations. They cemented the Union of
these States with their life's blood, and thus
raised and reared. the magnificent edifies, so
that it should remain a monument to their
wisdom and patriotism forever and forever.
Shall their sons permit the destruction of this
fair temple, and pus to theirehildren, nut the
glorious inheritance which they received from
their fathers, but a divided, touUlated and
dissevered estate, without"form or <tautness,"
to be regarded only 'by the nations of the

ever be applicable to this "America of ours?"

No, no, Heaven forbid, rather let us look
forward to that - day, when peace shall again
be restored to our common country ; when,no
government, or pretended government, shall
be recognised by any part of the American
poop% except that government, which was
presided over by Washington in Hi infancy,
strengthened and perfected by,Adams and
'
Jefferson Madison and Monroe,'ln its youth,
'protected by the iron will and unflinching
courage of. Andrew Jackson in ifs early age,
sad now preserved from the attach - 1 of a trai
torous brood by the 'strong arms and willing
hearts of more than five hundred thousand
true' American soldiers.
To this end, let us maintain our country's
-cause, with our' treasure, and, if needs be,
with our blood• Let no refuse all intercourse,
politically and personally, with such as are now
false to the old flag, and let as swear by our
manhood, and our hopes of heaven, never to
'yield to this rebellion, even though, in resist
ing it, our hearthstones should become a des
olation, and our homes a dream. [Applause
A Poorly:seta GINCILLL.—The New York
Post says of Gen. Mitchel : We are told by a
gentleman who has been with him throughout,
that with 15,000 men under his command, it
has cost the Government nothing for forage,
and very little, comparatively, for pay. One
instance of his readiness May be related : He
took a fort composed chiefly of cotton bales ;
he first made those bales • floating bridge,
over which Ite carried all his wagon' and
troops, and he then shipped them to Nash•
villa by railroad, where he sold them for $20,-
000 in gold.
