ADVERTISLNG AT REASONABLE RATES. WEDNESDAY MORNING, MARCH 12 The Famous Ericsson Battery. This singular vessel, called the MONITOR, has already rendered herself famous by her contest with the Merrimac. We copied an amount of her sometime ago, but as our read ers have many of them forgotten the deserii- Lion then given, we reproduce it, or rather give one by another hand: Under the act of Congress passed last sem inar, appropriating $1,500,000. for iron-clad vessels for the navy, Captain J. Ericsson, the world.-ronowned inventor of the calorie en gine, prelented proposals for a battery, to be launched within one hundred days from the date of the contract, the Impregnability of which !should be tested before the heaviest guns of the enemy, and at the shortest range. The contract was signed in October, and on the ene-hundredth-and!-tirst working day thereafter the Monitor was launched from the Continental Iron Works,ht °reappoint, where she was Constructed by CI 8. Bushnell Jr Co., ender the seperintendenon of Thos. P. Row land, of Brooklyn. Externally she presents to the fire of the enemy's guns a bull rising but about eighteen inches above the water, and a sort of Mar tell° tower, twenty feet in diameter, and ten feet high. The smoke-stack during aStion,li lowered into the bold, it being made w-Ablele ample slides. The hull is sharp at both ends, the bow projecting and coming . to a Obit at an angle of eighty degrees to the vertical line.- It la flatAnttoried, sit Nand a half feet in death, one hundred and- twenty-four feet long, thirty-four feet wide at the top, and is wilt of light three-eighth inch iron: Another, or upper hull, rests on this with perpendicular Bides and sharp ends, five feet high, forty feet four inches wide, one hundred and seventy -four fast long, extending over the sides of the lower hull three feet seven inches, and over eacitend twenty-five feet, thus serving as a protection to the propeller, rudder and anchor. The sides of the upper hull are cotnpdsed of an inner guard of iron, a wall of white oak thirty inches thick, covered with iron armor six inches thick. . , When in readiness for action the lower hull is. totally immersed, and the upper one is sunk three feet six inches, leaving only 113" inches above water. The interior is open to the bot tom like a sloop, the deck, which is bomb proof, coming Sash with the top of the upper hull. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning we bad a terrific storm of thunder, lightning and rain, and gained a rough experience of camp life. The camp was flooded, but the men continued in good spirits, especially as there was expeatation of a fight before night. The roads were bad and the day cold, such - weather as March usually brings to us in Ohio. At night we camped in order of battle not more than nine miles from New Madrid. The night was cold, ice form ing near an inch thick. We were moving early in the morning; the men eager to see the enemy, and growing more Impatient at , every step. At 1 o'clock p. m. we had approached with in about two and a half miles of the town, and the tops of the houses, and the smoke and steam. from the steam and gunboats were plainly visible. At this point Sao& battery and the 27th Ohio were sent forward, the in fantry in and on either side of the road as skirmishers. Having advanced about one mile, the line of battle was formed, the 7th Illinois cavalry and some companies of the 2d Michigan cavalry on the right and left flanks. The 43d Ohio was on the left, west of the road, the 39th Ohio on the tight of the road, across a lane"fiut by the enemy to defend themselves in case of an attack on their fort. Immediately in the rear of the 39th were the 83d Ohio, on thi .extreme right; the 26th MOON and the Missourilth were on the left, in the rear of the 43d Ohio. The report was that there were five gun boats . at the river wharf, and about five thou sand troops in and about the fort, just beyond the southern part of the town. There had been some earthworks thrown up on the road by Which - we approached the town, but they were not defended. We learned also that Co lumbUs was evacuated and that the force had moved to an Island about ten miles above the town, which was strongly fortified, and ac counted for' the presence of the gunboats at New Madrid. As the line of battle was being formed, a• gunboat from the upper part of the town threw a shell,'which burst at a, short range in mid air. They fired at intervals but the range was short. Soon, however, they', begin to. play more accurately on the right' wing, and the Minnetading wash's brisk as we Could desire. The shot slid shell fell in and around the 39th and 133 d Style that few of ns had ever seen before and the courage of the men was fully tested; They stood as firm, and gave indication's' of as much unconcern as if they were veteran _ m • Re oconpled our, position near two hours, duringlibielt the infantry ; cavalry 'did not 'tire a chat, and only stew guns of our ar tillorjr were heard.. The Evacuation of Manassas Our telegraph dispatches from Washington indicate that the rebels are abandoning their positions in the neighborhood of the Poto mac, so long and Obstinately held. This , looks as if Virginia and Richmond are to be yielded up, as there is hardly& better strategi- . cal point this side of Richmond than those given up: It Is possible that the Confeder ate Government is going to concentrate its whole power on a narrower basis, and defend alone the Gulf States proper. If so, our ar mies can be also condensed, and the whole contest may be settled in one grand battle. The following dispatch from Washington, of the 9th inst., shows that the work of evacua tion was going on last week : Thanks to information received from four of the rejected and despised slaves, the mili tary authorities have learned to-day what no white man could tell them, that the Rebels have fallen back from all .their positions on the Potomac line. Geary chased out of Lees burg what remained of their forces, and own pied-the three forts yesterday. To-day one Of the most formidable of the rebel batteries on the LoWer 'Potomac, 'that at Cockpit' Point, opposite , the, headquarters. of 'Hooker's DiVbdon; wee - attacked by gunboats of our flotilla, and 'after' a tbatli 'conflict was talented, the gunners, together With the rebel regiments encamped behind the battery, tak ing to their heels. Subsequently a force was landed and the Stare and Stripes planted on the .rebel stronghold. Cockpit 'buttery has been the greatest annoyance to our shipping during the blockade of the Potouiso, having ' thrown nearly 12;000 shells at passing vessels, and at the Massachisetts, New • Hampshire, and New Jersey : camps, 'on the Maryland shore. 'On Friday last, Gen: Mooker placed the two Whltwortk.gans, sent from England by Amer. leans, on a bluff opposite the Cockpit battery, and directing the pincerhimself, threw a num ber of shots into the rebel battery, sad into' the camps behind IL The.range of then, guns Is said. to be seven miles. Oar forces, • after , 'pleating the Stare and Stripes over this bat tery, made moonnolssancen up and down the river until they discovered, sea telegraph from. Gen. Hooker announces to-night, that the rebels had orientated all their batteries and spiked all their guns. Lorna—Dispatches received since the above was in type, show. that the evacuation of the Potoniao•ls a thing accomplished, and that the formidable Intreachments at Manapsan, of whieh'we have heard so much, are noir seen pied by our troops, without striking a blew: :What next ? Onward to Richmond 1 Or shall we wait until the enemy intrenches himself somewhere else. • The Reorganization of the Potomac According toll:. folimiing diipstch from Wevhington, the I?resident - hu reorganised the Potomac , army, no doubt with s, view to more active service : - The' President has determined - to perfect the Organisation of the Army of the Potomac Mildint it into tiro co7s' d avviee, commanded by; OM "seAlor Generals of division, namely , Mlsjoi-Oen.
