Our Eastern exchanges continue, to publish letters describing the particulars of the aflair at Port Royal Perry, on the let of January. From all accounts tho was in pretty largo forco, and was badly punished. They fled in all directions, and their defences were completely destroyed. As thoy flpd, they set firo to their cotton, and great quantities' were destroyed. As it was not intended to hold tho position, our troops retired next day in good order. Wo take a few extracts containing some interesting incidents. A correspondent of the Now York Tribune gives the following account of tho disappointment of the negroes, on the return of our troops : The negroes were greatly disappointed, having bod no notice of the departure of tho troops. Prom -every direction,-they came running across the fields, loaded with bandies, followed by their wires nnd children, and in some instances mounted on horses which had lately belonged to less loyal masters. Few of them were able to get away.. Wo coaid seo them from the deck, slowly and mournfully returning to their cabins. Some of them had no cabins to retire to, for tho fire had not snared loyal homes. It was s:<d to think what their fate might be if the rebels returnod, as they almost certainly -would, to carry: back with thorn the negroes whose willing services we I most not forget to say that tho pilot of the Ottawa was an intelligent .slave named William, and that only by his knowledge of the channels and porfect fidelity wero the gnnboats able to penetrate these treacherous waters, jand I am glod to add that he'was cordially thanked on thequartcr deckby Capt. Rogers and Capt. Stevens. A correspondent of the Now’ York'7&ae» says that the negroes acted as guides for our troops. We quote: Indeed, negroes had furnished Gen. Stevens with much of his information relative to the. condition of.the country, and npon their statements many of his plans were based.' In «o instance was that information found unreliable or defective. I have 'this assurance direct from himself. Negroes warned him of an im portant part of the enemy ’s plan ; of an am bush preparing for him, in consequence of which he changod his-routo. Negroes also told that so unexpected was otirapproach, tho .inhabitants of. the-various : houses along the jiver, had 'remained ; in ..their homes until, the grossing wsa actually effected. This, indeed, W.as corrobofa(ed'T>y~the "condition of-the dwelling*/which.had evidently been left only a few hours before.' Negroes also stated that, as soon'-as we had-crossed/the rebel force in the battery at the forry sot work to remove their guns, and did actually; get away fire or. • six. If thih beoorrect, the brant South Car olinians never, for an. instant, .contemplated, the possibility of. holding on U. As soon as. they knew that the . Yankees, had crossed the river, they took it for, granted that their own defeat was certain. They got into thowoods, however, and prepared, from this sknlking place, to fire upon the'Union forces. All the accounts conspire in saying thatthe chivalry did not stand up to . tho fight-very well. The correspondent of the Time» says: # Tim rebels fired cotton houses in every direction inhll the surrounding country, evi dently supposing that they should be unable to withstand, and expecting our advance. It is strange thnt-their only idea of desperation, is not to defend bnt to destroy their own pro perty. Instead of. setting about a goodearn est fight to the last, whenever the Yankees appear thoy acknowledge' at onoe .that they oxpeetto be worsted,~ahd don't mean to fight at all. Thoy have been taunting our soldiers for weeks across this very Port Royal Ferry, thoy have been assuring ns in their newspa pers, and when flags of truce bavo been .in terchanged, that once give them- a chance to fight us fairly, and we should #qa v who were the better men. They talrea. baUer v weto ar. numerous as the Union foreo; thoy wero fight ing for their homes, (they say,) and they could not be taunted into comingfrom-undor cover; thoy would pot fight except as decoys, or in ambush. Thoy drew off, andsaw Union troops demolish thoirfort, and to indicate their own bravery* simply added to the devastation by burning private property. Tho Unionists de stroyed none but public. property. Next morning they moved off five miles into the interior,; to GprdenV Corners, evi dently not having yet got over tho effects of the day before. It is'not well to opderrate an enemy, but whero is the spirit of Southern chivalry? Whero is the pluck, tbi spirit,' that was to hold out to the last? On tho contrary, tho Union volunteers with both nerve and coolness; they were skillfully handled, and thoy showed confidence‘in their officers and in tbbmselvcs. It must be re membored that, with tho exception of tho New York Seventy-ninth, thoy had never been un der fire before; bnt thore was no flinching. I have heard unanimous admiration expressed, both by thoir own ofiicers and by those in tho naval portion of tho littlo expedition. The Cairo River Fleet, We look.erory hoar.for nows from tho great nrer fleet; Tho following description of tho fleet will bo road with interest: Next to the overpowering numbers of the expedition is the formidable character of the floating batterio*, which -will form a k compo nent part of it. ‘ These havo. been prepared with great care, and consist Of boats of the most substantial construction. Tho total number of boats is sovcnty-eight,vof which twelve are gun-boats, thirty-eight mortar boats, and twonty-cight arc tags and steam boats. The gun-boats aro as follows : „ * Guns. They are one hundred and seventy fivo feet in length; fifty-one feet six inches in breadth, and draw five feet-when loaded. The sides of .the boats, both above and below tho knees, inolino at an angle of forty-five de grees, and nothing but a plunging shot from a high bluff could strike the surfece alright angles. The boilers andmachincry are so sit uated as to be perfectly protected, add maybe considered quite out ef dangor. The iron plating has boon severely tested by shots from rifled cannon, at different distances, add has shown Itself to be utterly impervious? to. any shots that havo f>ccn sent against it. cven at a ran go of three hundred yards. Tho bows and bow bulwarks consist of about three feet of oak timber, bolted together and sheathed with the best quality of wrought iron plates two and a h*lf>inches thick: Tho sides havo tho samo sheathing, with - less bulk of timber. Eoch boat is pierced for thirteen guns, four on each side, four on the stern, and throe at the bows. They will; each'carry one fifteen inch mprtar. The mortar boat* will bo towed into position,by tags. : With this formidable armament, and a form of srfventy-flvo; thousand men, the onward march must be comparatively resistless.' « it wm reported that Gen. Smithson, the banker] He has always professed to be a strict member of the Methodist. Episcopal Church.' 110 was. one of the prime movers in getting up a new church at the corner of Ninth snd E streets,! the foundstion_walls of which were.built' up! thetime South Carolina seceded. .The lot ia now- occupied by temporary sutlers’ stores.. The causes which led to his arrest aro stated to be as, follows: In one of the rebel mails lately captured on the lower Potomae,a.paper was found giving fall particulars of numbers, condition and position of onr troops. near tho city, with other information valnabl? to the enemy. Tho letter is sAid to ad dressod to Goneral Beauregard, and from tho reports in circulation was sent before tho disaster at Bull Run. ’This looks probable, from the fact that it waseigued by additions name, and it was somo time before it could bo traced to Smithson. It is said that among tho documents found was a pTan for the cap ture of Washington, which had beon drawn by Smithson himself. There is no doubt but that this arrest will bavo. tho-effect of ridding tho city of a nest of conspirators that have for a long time existed in its midst. How a Rebel Sympathizer was Trapped. A Cairo correspondent .of tho St. Louis Re publican says: . A rather amusing circumstance happened at Caledonia, where Captain Fullerton’s company is stationed. A very respectable, old gentle man, holding a high-office in the county, has long bcen suspeoted of secession -sympathies, and- it was determined to try him. A young 'man of the company, dressed himself in. fine citizens’ clothes, went to the old manVhouse* at night, and asked "for ,: “assistance.” He 'was gruffly told tbat he oontdf get &6 iuoneyor anything else; but after ‘'some-parleying dis closed that he was a 1 bearer -of dispatches to the soutoern government, and that it wasab-' solutely necessary for him .to cross theriver that night..
