AMERICANS ARE BUILDING R. R.'S ON RUSS FRONT Transform 75 Miles of Dyna mited and Burned Bridges Soroka, Russian Lapland, Juno 30, via London, Aug. 22.—Pushing forward daily Into territory of the Bolshevlkl and often under Are, the American railway troops on the Murman front in two months trans formed 76 miles of dynamited and burned bridges and railways, wreck ed and destroyed by retreating Bol sheviki, into a workable railway which they manned, operated and maintained. To these troops the British com mand gives much of the credit of the seventy-live mile advance to ward Petrozavodsk. In the con tingent were 36 officers and 67a men. comprising the 167 th anil 168 th companies of railway troops as a spocial battalion under Major IS. IS. MacMoreland, Kansas City, and every kind of railroader from & superintendent to a section hand. Arc Fast Workers. The Yanks worked so fast in fact that tho Bolsheviki according to prisoners taken, believed that they had miraculous machines for track laying and adjustable bridges which they dropped in as they went along. It was all done by a gang under Captain C. J. Jones, of Patcrson, N. J., who in Alaskan and Latin- American Jobs was nicknamed "Hurry-up Jones." The men work ed seventeen hours daily with the enemy right ahead and the British artillery right behind awaiting con struction. There were also battles and skirmishes In many small sid ings whero on several occasions the constructors and also the train's • crows were under lire. On May 19, while building a bridge under shrapnel fire, the Yanks were surrounded by Bolshe viki skipping through the woods dynamiting the bridge three versts in the rear. On the way back to repair the bridge the Y'anks were again attacked at close range but managed to escape. Junk Piles Mn<le Over The shop detachment, under Captain C. E. McMillan, of South America and Panama, formerly from Omaha, had to transform junk pile equipment into workable rolling stock. Then the Yanks, under Captain H. G. Odell, former assistant and i superintendent at Santa Fa, built i and operated an eight mile street I railway in Murman. Under Lieu- j tenant Chas. B. Tuttle, they operat- | ed and manned an armored train. Railroad men who formerly drew I high pay in Boston, Pittsburgh, or Indiana shared in making these railway enterprises a Yankee suc cess. More Money Than Ever in Circulation in British Villages London, Aug. 22. More money than ever before is now in circula- I tlon in English villages, and its e&sy expenditure is apparent even to the casual passerby. Extra wages earn ed by workmen, housemaids farm laborers have brought about an astonishing social change. One evidence of this is seen in the great increase in bicycles and motorcycles, which has necessitated the establishment of countless gar ages and repair shops throughout the country. Dancing and other clubs are springing up everywhere. Whist clubs are favorites, and the costliness of tho prizes for which the members play would, a few years ago, have constituted almost a scandal. The sense of well being and the demand for a more com- I fortable life is assigned as the cause I for this last development. It is taken by sociologists as a perman ent thing which is more likely to in crease than to diminish. Mexican Rebel Kills Ninety Men of the Tanhuijo Garrison Xar<xlo, Texas, Aug. 22.—Killing I of ninety men of the government garrison at Tanhuijo, state of Vera Cruz, Mexico, by followers of Man uel Pelaez, the rebel chief of the oil regions, is reported in copies or El Ileraldo de Mexico which have been received here. Sixty were kill ed in defending the town. According to the published ac count, the rebel chief forced the commander of the garrison, Lieu tenant-Colonel Marques, to execute the 30 prisoners with a machine gun, later hanging the unfortunate officer up by his heels and shooting nim. f Middletown — — —— mm—mm Funeral Services For Philip A.
