Middle Releases 200 The middle division has released ' probably 200 men to date. About a ! half dozen crews have already been I laid off and the clerical force has been [ severely pared. Has Peculiar Turn The retrenchment took a peculiar turn at No. 3 engine house, at Altoona. yesterday afternoon. During the day twenty-five new men were hired, while i phortly before quitting time twenty four men received notice that they were suspended and were directed to call at the office for the checks. None of those who had been employed were relieved and upon what basis the hiring and suspensions were carried out lias not been explained. The net result of the day'p work wws that there was one more man on the payroll in the evening than there was in the morning.
