WAR GARDEN CROP IS TO BE DOUBLED State College Expert Helps City Authorities to Make Plans; Plot to Cost $1.50 Ilarrisburg is out for another rec* ord. This time the object is to dou ble la.st year's garden products and John li. Bechtel, extension special" ist of State Colege, is in town now getting the campaign started. Mr. Bechtel was engaged yesterday in conferring with the agricultural committee of the Chamber of Com merce and the Ilarrisburg school board. To-day he was very busy with the students of Central High tind Technical High, the grammar grades in the western section of the city and some on Allison Hill. This afternoon there was a second con ference with the Chamber of Com merce supervisors and to-night the garden expert will speak in Steelton. High School. It is pretty generally understood now by all America that winning the war depends on our food prod uct. Lrfist year this city made a beginning which was creditable. Oil the plots furnished by the Chamber of Commerce $7,800 worth of food was grown. The schoolchildren are credited with producing $2,100 worth. To double this, up-to-date methods will be employed by Shlr j ley B. Watts, who is in charge of the Commerce plots. He intends to give each gardener information as to how to get the best results; to provide a booklet which will spec ify how, when and what to plant. Supervisors will be detailed to be at at tho different war gardens at cer tain hours each day to give any in formation to help make the gardens a success. This year there will be ■a small charge of $1.50 for a' plot, the cost of tractors and other ac cessories being considerable. Mr. Watts said to-day that he expected to have the land ready for allot ment early In April, this depending somewhat on the weather. "PAT" HVLAN 11.1.
