STAMM, JOHN FOX WEISS, W. P. STARKEY, Cuban Sugar Arriving in U.S.Will Relieve Shortage and Bring Down Prices Thai the price of nine to nlne-and- j one-half cents a pound for loose granulated sugar will prevail during th year 1918 is the assurance given to-day by wholesale llrms In Harris burg:. Their conviction is based on the order of the United States Gov ernment. which Is peremptory, though the prices will not be universal, prob ably until thirty or sixty days from now. This declaration is looked upon by wholesalers as a direct slap at housewives and others who have been buying sugar at ten cents a pound and hoarding it. * "Do not hoard sugar" is the urgent demand from all persons dealing in the necessity, all persons who have the good of the country at heatf}. . It is useless to hoard sugar, say the wholesalers, because instead of paying ten cents a pound for it the price is now bound to come down. The fact of the matter is that in this ter ritory there 'has been no shortage of sugar, for about :>0 per tent, more has been distributed this year than in | 1916. for the period of three months. I Sugar Is now coining from Cuba in great quantities. "Cuban canes" is the grocers' term for this commodity. The I United States Government dictates to I the refiner what he shall pay for this ! and what he shall charge. The re- | [ tailer is allowed a reasonable protit, and he will be able to keep that protit j within sixty d&ys by selling his I sugar at nine or nine-and-a-half) | cents per pound.
