BELL By Special Correspondence Newport, Pa., Oct. 23.—A great deal of interest is being manifested by her friends, which means practically the entire community, in the approaching ninty-seventh birthday anniversary of Miss Margaretta Louden Bell, wlhlch will occur on November 12. This re markable woman has for a long time been Newport's oldest resident and for over two generaions one of the i best known among Newport people. 'She is of Cumberland county birth and lof Scotch-Irish and Welsh descent, (having been born on the estate of her grandfather, Archibald Louden, near ! Hogestown, November 12. ISIS, about two years before Perry county was separated from Cumberland county, Notwithstanding this fact 95 of her 97 years has been lived in Newport and its vicinity. The house in southeast | Center Square wihk'h is now her home, has been so for 70 years The site be came the property of her mother in 1845, but the dwelling is now consid erably enlarged in comparison with its original "ize. For about 35 years she j successfully conducted the town's lead ing millinery establishment and thus j she secured a wide circle of acqualnt janceship. Her memory, especially for | earlier events, Is apparently faultless. .She remembers the building of the Pennsylvania Canal in 1828, when her father had the contract to build the lower Newport acqueduct, and she re ■ alls the building of the Pennsylvania railroad in 1848 and the passing through Newport of its first train. She has seen Newport grow from less 'than a dozen houses to its present size and she has borne no small part |in the business, social and religious I life of the town through every year of its existence up to this time. She reads the newspapers with a keen rel ish and is informed and has opinions j concerning the great events now trans piring. Many times during the last year she has attended the services of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, of which she has been a commu, nicant member for 71 years, and only last week, in company with a young woman adiuirer, she was an enthusiastic patron of one of the towms motion picture theaters. She entertains friends at her home and finds as great delight as ever in re turning their calls with reasonable promptness. Her needle has not lost its cunning and many friends .now treasure articles of fancy work which she has knit or crocheted during the last year or two. The portrait which accompanies this sketch was made four years ago, on her 93rd birthday, which event, in recent years, is annu ally made the occasion of a large all day party by her friends.
