has been discussed, but no definite
action In this respect has been decided
upon.
Electric Company to Light Floats
Many of the floats that will be
moored to the steps will he lighted by
electricity and the current for this
purpose is being supplied gratuitously
by the Harrlsburg Light* and Power
Company. These floats will include
the merchants' displays that will help
to make the Susquehanna water front
more than ordinarily interesting on
carnival night.
The river front, incidentally, will not
be the only new electrically lighted
section: Second street's new series of
lamps from Locust to State streets will
.be aglow all evening. They will be
switched Into service for the first time
Thursday evenins.

The Committee on Invitations an
nounces that the following is a neces
sarily incomplete list of names of per
sons invited to the Municipal Improve
ment Celebration. The committee
would be under obligations to any
who would give it the names of any
one who has been identified with
either the inception, conduct, or com
pletion of the municipal improve
ments that are being celebated, as it
Is realized that, without intent, some

To-day Harrisburg boasts of thir+
teen splendidly equipped playgrounds,
two of them with running tracks, an
other about to be laid out for similar
purposes, scores ot' tennis courts, base
bc.ll diamonds —and a whole city who
Is heart and soul with the movement
to provide municipal playgrounds for
Its youngsters.
The story of the development of the
playground system as a paVt of the
city park department Is long, rather
arduous and not without Its high
lights. And to one V. Grant Forrcr,
former secretary and superintendent
cf the Park Department, Belongs tho
larger share of individual credit, per
haps, In the pioneer movejnent for the
betterment of the play conditions of
Ilarrlsburg's thousands of kids.
Supervision and Equipment
"With the purcnase of the Sycamori
and Thirteenth and the Fifth and Em
erald street grounds this summer by
City Commissioner M. Harvey Taylor,
superintendent of parks and public
property, Harrisburg now boasts of
recreation places of its kids at Reser
voir, Twelfth street. Fourth street near
Hamilton. Hamilton school building,
Penn, Boas, Calder, Seventh and Kel
ker, Eighth ward, for colored young
sters, and on the Island.
Baseball To-day!
Just a word as to baseball. In one
year, an average year. 1,071 permits
were issued to play ball on the Island
diamonds alone. Reservoir Park
boasts of the finest tennis courts and
tennis club houses In Central Penn
sylvania.
The Big Track Meets
In 1907 the first big Intercollegiate
and lnterscholastlc meets on the Island
were held. Now half a dozen other
track meets, including the grammar
school and tho interplayground meets,
are held every year.
Golf Links
Formal organization of a city ama
teur baseball league was a direct re
sult of the playground movement and
the splendid golf links at Reservoir
alone have made possible the organ
ization of the Harrisburg Park Golf
Club. It now boasts of a well- »
appointed, modern clubhouse, qrc-ected
during the past year by Commissioner
Taylor.
Wlldwood Lake, the great expanse
of water In Wildwood Park, with Its
motor and row boat facilities and boat
house provided by the city, yearly
draws hundreds of people.
Skating On Wlldwood Lake
And, when winter rolls down Its
white blanket and tightens its grasp
on the waters of the lake, thousands
of Harrisburgers, old and young, hunt
up their skates, sharpen 'em and
crowd cars and automobiles for Wlld
wood Lake!
