GREAT CELEBRATION OF CITY'S MUNICIPAL IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MOST ELABORATE FETE IN ALL PENNSYLVANIA ELABORATE LIGHTING TO FEATURE CARNIVAL [Continued From First Page.] cn unique effect, it is figured, but will mean the enclosure of the whole sec tion of the basin that will bemused for the carnival purposes in a string of light, fjom one end of the city to the coal wharf on the island. Similar festooning of the river wall from Maclay street to Market by stringing lights between the standards has been discussed, but no definite action In this respect has been decided upon. Electric Company to Light Floats Many of the floats that will be moored to the steps will he lighted by electricity and the current for this purpose is being supplied gratuitously by the Harrlsburg Light* and Power Company. These floats will include the merchants' displays that will help to make the Susquehanna water front more than ordinarily interesting on carnival night. The river front, incidentally, will not be the only new electrically lighted section: Second street's new series of lamps from Locust to State streets will .be aglow all evening. They will be switched Into service for the first time Thursday evenins. OLD PROBLEM Harrisburg After Many Years Solves the Question of the In evitable Interruption ORGANIZE PLAYGROUND WORK I . Some Highlights About Harris burg's Wonderful Development in Children's Recreation Movement • The spectators on the lumber pile bleachers waited, hushed, tense, ex pectant. Reddy Smith was at the bat. Much depended upon Reddy Smith. A certain problem of a summer's standing, the problem of who's who In baseballdom, was about to be set tled between the River Rats and the Second Street Juniors. The game was nearlng Its close, the Juniors 'way be | hind by two runs, with two men out,, j boasted of two men on bases. Much, depended upon Reddy Smith. Roddy i Smith was the .300 man of the Rats, And this was the ninth Inning. Tlic Interruption That Reddy Smith did the yeoman service expected of him goes without Baying. Ho was on his way around the bases for the howl-producing "'fourbagger" when the Interruption j came—the always. Inevitable, expect - | ed Interruption of the board yard of | the building lot or the commons or the side street baseball game 'way back on the summer afternoons of the Road to Yesterday. The Policeman, backed by the Jani tor or the "Watchman, loomed large) on the horizon. Future major leaguers disaitpeared. Tears and years rolled by before the problem of the River Rats and the Second Street Juniors was finally set tled. Harrisburg officially went into tho playground bustnest; In 1906; it brought the system down to a definite workable bails In 1907.
