HICKOK, I Secretary, • THE "HALINGO" > I had never seen such a creature before. It stood about five feet high, evidently belonged to the Rpe family, and resembled a man more than any thing else. These animals are of a brownish color except their faces, which arei white. They walk erect on their hind feet, and) the males possess a long white beard, which gives them a very peculiar appear ance. The female carries her young I In her arms, the same as a woman. The interior of Central America is their habitat; I do not know of any other jungles in which they are found. They are seldom seen in the day-time, are very ferocious when cornered, and have enough muscular strength to outmatch a dozen men. Tho natives call tills remarkable man-monkey the ■ "hallngo," and regard It rs an evil spirit.—Wide World Magasine. DEADLY STEEL ARROW French mllitnry airmen are employ ing a new weapon, known as a "flech ette," which is proving to be as effec tive In harassing the personnel of an army as any offensive instrument yet designed for use with llghter-than-air machines. It consists of a steel arrow of about the same size and much the same appearance as a lead pencil. The head of it Is tapered, while lengthwise I grooves serve to give it the proper balance and allow It to travel through the air point downward. A score or more of these are dropped at one time over a trench. A report of the effect of these arrows, falling from a height of about 3,000 feet, states that one of them, striking a soldier on the shoul der, passed entirely through his body, and traversed the length of his leg, emerging through his foot. Condon, superintendent, that a pri | vate ambulance should be bought for : the use of the hospital. The present | ambulance is being used by the city ! police deportment to get prisoners and (take them to and from the jail. I On several occasions when the am i bulance was needed It was busy taking | prisoners to jail, thus delaying the 1 medical case awaiting to be taken care (of. j Mr. Condon said to-day that tho 1 hospitals in the other cities have pri vate ambulances to answer their calls, and that considering the large num ber of admissions and discharged pa k tients each week at the local institu tion he thought that the ambulance would be a big improvement on the present system. It is believed that much of the money to be used In pur chasing the machine should the man agers favor of the plan, will be raised by public subscription. At present the institution is providing for more than one hundred patients on a daily aver nge, crowding conditions at the institu tion. "MEDICINE MAN*' IS A WOMAN The term medicine-man" is some what of a misnomer, as the reader might be led to believe that a medi cine-man is a. man who dispenses medicine. This is quite wrong, for not only are they ignorant of medi- I cine, but as likely as not the medicine "man" is a woman. As a matter of fact, the most celebrated medicine "man" in Alaska at the present time is a woman. The lady rejoices in the name of No-ha-de-lan. Her name, literally translated, means "the woman who never came back.'* Where, or how she got this curious cognomen T ! was never able to learn, but the old lady is very proud of it.—Wide World Magazine.
