STEEL COMMON UMSETTLED MARKETS Shares Fell Over Eleven Points as Result of Passing of Dividend; Others Have Suffered liy Associated Press New York, Jan. 30. Passing of the dividend on the common stock of the United Sttaes Steel Corporation was Ihe unexpected and unsettling feature of the week. The shares fell over eleven points as a result, the authori ties of the exchange being impelled to i educe the minimum from 18 to 40, with enormous sales between those figures. Other prominent stocks suftered in lesser degree, losses of 3 to 6 points being quite general. Canadian Pacific declined more than any other high priced railway issue, its loss of almost eight points from last Saturday being ascribed mainly to very unfavorable earnings. Much of the selling of Cana dian Pacific and other internationals came from abroad, liquidation from that source being made easier by the removal here of the ban against de liveries of securities. Aside from the steel dividend sus pension, conditions In that trade point ed toward improvement. Coppers also showed a better tone on the successive ly higher prices quoted for tile metal, but general trade advices were more than usually conflicting. Bank clear ings Indicated some hesitation in the markets for general merchandise, but cash was in greater supply at all re serve centers) Railroad earnings for December con tinued to show net losses, but some of tlie larger systems reported reductions in operating expenses.
