"Aheavy force ignow working from Erie towards our land in the western di rection, the means for the completion of which haa been rat-ed, it will soon be finished. The Allegheny Valley 'Railroad connects os with New York, Boston and Pittsburg. The Ve nango Road connects us with the West. There are already good Turnpiko Roads running through Ibis property, various other roada have been opened to accommodate the emigration and aeltlement which has already taken place. There ia no opportunity equal to it now of fered to the man who wants to provide himself a home in an easy way, and make a settlement where he can live in prosperity and iudepend | ence in a climate Perfectly Healthy. No case of fevet ever having been known to occur in this settlement. It ia not tike going to the backwoods of lire Waal, among perhaps intolerant people, where there is no society, churches, or schools, where the pricowf litnd is high, and where the emigrant, after being used lo the healthlost climate in the world, haa to endure sickness and pain, and perhaps ruins his health and that of his family. But here is a thriving settlement haying Ihtee towns, con taining churches, anhoola, hotels, stores saw mills, grist mills, and everything desired. There ia a cash matkcl at hand. The lumber trade last year atucunted to ovor two hundred million feet of lumber. In a short time, owing to the coal.it will become still more valuable as a I number of ironworks and manufactories will soon he started; Ihey are at present starting them extensively at VVaireu. Even for those who do not wish to go there, the payments are such that they can easily buy a farm to save their rising families from want in the future, or to gain a competence by the rise which will take place In the value or lands. Report of the Committee appointed to mperiiUend the burning of the Iron Safe* at Reading, Feb. 27th, 1897. READING, March 4ih. The undersigned, member* of'the Commit tee, do respectfully report, that we saw the -two Safes originally agreed cpon by Farraie & Herring and Evans & Walton, placed tide by side in a lornaee, viz: The Sale io use by the Paymaster of the Philadelphia and Read ing Railroad Company, in hie office at Read ing, manufactured by Farrels k Herring, and the Safe in nte by H. A. Lanta, in bia store, manufactured by Evans k Watson, and put in books and precisely alike. The fire was started l 8J o'clock, A. M., and kept on until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut top wood were entirely consumed, the whole under the superintendence of the subscribers, mem bers ol the Committee. The Safes were then cooled off with water, after whioh they were opened, agd the books and papers taken out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Lanitc'e store for public examination, after they were first examined and marked by the Commit tee. The book* and paper* taken from the Safe manufactured by Evan* & Watson ware but slightly affected by the intense heat, while those taken from the Safe manufac tured bv Farrels & Herring were, in our judg ment, damaged fully fifteen per cent, motet than Unas taken ftena Evan* b Watatmh Safe.
