ARTIFICISL DIGESTIVE Fluid, or Gastric, Suice.l A GREAT DISPEPSIA CURER I Prepared from Rennet,vi the fourth Stomach of the Ox, after directions of Baron Lie big, the great Physiological Chemist, by s. Houghton. M. D., No. 11, North Eighth Street, Philadelphia, Pa, This is a truly wonderful remedy for In digestion, Dyspepsia, Jaundice, Liver Complaint, Constipation, and Debility curing after Nature's own method, by Nature's own agent, the Gastric Juice. WWI a teaspoonful of this Fluid, infused in water, will- digest or dissolve, Five Pounds of Roast Beef in about two hull., out of the stomach. 11-ly Digotion. Digestion is chiefly per formed in the stomach by the aid of a fluid which freely exudes front the inner coat of -t tat - orgam - when in a state of health, called the Gastric Juice. This fluid is the Great Sovent of the Food, the Purifying, Preserv ing and Stimuating Agent of the stomach and intestines. Without it there will be no digestion no conversion of food into blood. and no nutrition of the body ; but rather a foul, torpid, painful, and destructive condi tion of tho whoe digestive apparatus. A. weak, haf dead, or injured stomach produ ces no good Gastric Juice, and hence the disease, distress and debility which ensue. Pepsin and Rennet.—Pepsin is the chief element, or great digestin g principle of the Gastric Juice. It is found in great abun dance in the soid parts of the human sto mach after death, and sometimes causes the stomach to digest itself. or era itself up. It is also found in the stomach of animals. as the ox, calf, &c. It is the material used by farmers in making cheese, called Rennet,. the effect of which has long been the spe cial wonder of the dairy. The curdling of mik is the first process of digestion. Ren net possesses astonishing power. The sto mach of a calf will curdle nearly one thou sand times its own weight of Baron Liebig states that, "One part of Pepsio, dissolved in sixty thousand parts of water,. will digest meat and other rood." Diseased stomachs produce no good Gastric Juice,. Bennet or Pepsin. To show that this want may be perfectly supplied, we quote the following Scientific Evidenec!—Baron Liebig, in his celebrated work on Animal Chemistry, says: "An Artificial Digestive Fluid may be readily prepared from the mucous mem brume of the stomach of the Call, in which various articles of food, ns meat rind eggs,. will be softened, changed, and digested, just in the same manner as they would be in the human stomach." • Dr. Pereira, in his famous treatise on "Food and Diet," published by IVilson & Co., New York, page :35, states the same great fact, and describes the method of pre paration. There are few higher authori ties than Dr. Pereira Dr. John IV. Draper, Professor of Che mistry in the Medical College of the Uni versity of New YOrk, in his "Text 13ool«if Chemistry," page 886, says, "it has been a question whether artificial digestion coull be performed—but it is now universally ad mitted that it may he." Professor Dunglison of Philadelphia, itt his great work in Ilumno Physiology, de votes more than fifty pages to en examina tion of this subject. Flit; experiments with Dr. Beaumont, on the Gastric Juice, ob tained from the living human stomach and from animals are well known. "In all ca ses," "he says" "digestion necurrr d as per fectly in the artificial as in the natural di gestions." 51,251,309' of .1s a Dy.sprpsia Curer.—Dr. Ilougliton's preparation of Pepsin has produced the most marvellous effects, curing cases of De bility, Emaciation, Nervous Decline, and L/yspeptic Consumpticn, supposed •to be on the very verge of the grave. It is impossi ble to give the detaiis of cases in the limits of this advertisement—but authenticated certificates have been given of more than 2no Ncur arkuhle Cares, in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston alone. These were nearly all desperate cases, and the cures were nut only rapid and wonderful, but per manent. It is n gr,2at Nervous Antidote, and from the astonishingly small quantity necessary to produco healthy digestion, is belie Ned to act upon Electro-31a0ici lc Principles. —There is no form of Old Stomach Complaints which it does not seem to reach and remove at once. No matter how had they may be, it gives instant relief! A single dose removes all the unpleasant symptoms, and it only needs to be repeated, for a short time, to make these good effects permanent, purity of blood and vigor of body, follow at once. It is portico= larly eccellent in cases of NfIUMI, Vomiting,• Cramps, Soreness of the pit of the Stomach, distress after eating, low, cold, state of' tho Blood, Heaviness, Lowness of Spirits, Des- - pondency, Emaciation, iVeakness, tenden- - cy to Insanity, Suicide, &c. Price one dollar per bottle. One bottle . will olle'n effect a lasting cure. • PEPSIN IN POURERS, Sent by Mail, Free of Postage. For con-- venience of sending' to all parts of the•coun try, the Digestive_ matter of the pepsin is put up in the form of Powders, with direc tions to be dissolved in diluted alcohol, wa ter, or syrup, by the patient.
