Hoover , SEWN= RONBERY AND ArrimPT TO MIIRDEN..— On Wednesday evening last a man named White got off the cars at Perrysville,. on the Pennsylvania railroad, for the purpose of visit ing Eccles Johnston, with whom he was in timately acquainted years ago. Learning there that Johnston was dead, he got in company with three young men named Dow Snivels, William Dean and James Bponeberger. They drank freely, and soon became intoxicated; after having hid a "high did time" in and around Perrysville, they went to Patterson, still drinking on the way. In the evening, all four started 'on their return to Perrysville, going down the railroad. This is the lea time they were all seen together. Some time during the night, the watchman found White lying near the track, apparently dead, about a mile west of Perrysville. It was soon found that life was not entirely extinct, and he was taken to Perrysville and his wounds dressed. It was ascertained tbat he had received severe wounds in the head and thigh, and several unimportant ones in other places. Previous to this, a large sum of money, probably eighty dollars, had been seen on his person, but when he was found not a cent could be found in his possession. The presumption is that White was attacked by his companions, robbed by them of his money, and his body then placed upon the railroad track, so that passing' trains might complete I the work of his destruction. The party have I been arrested and committed to prisoir . to answer. ..--........... Aaruste or a Waren TIOXL—Day before yes terday Mr. Zimmerman, jeweller, Market street, missed a valuable gold watch from his store, and from certain suspicions circumstances, he had reason to suspect a man wearing the uni form of a soldier, who had bean in his estab lishment a short time previous, as the person who purloined it. Information of the fact was at once made at the Mayor's office, and the police being furnished with th)a description of the supposed thief, proceeded to hunt him up; but after several hours spent* in this pursuit, daring which they visited Camp Curtin, and almost every point in the city where soldiers "most do congregate," they finally concluded that he had left the city. In the meantime, notification of the robbery, with a desoription of the alleged thief, was sent by magnetic tele. graph to the police authorities of Beading and Lancaster, and this morning a dispatch was re ceived in return from the former city, announc ing that a man answering the given description was arrested there yesterday, with the stolen , watch in his possession. Officer Campbell left for Beading this morning, and he was expected , to return, with the thief in custody, at one o'clock this afternoon. Wismar. Pau sea AT l3nAlrr's HALL To-Nrcarr. So great Is the desire to hear Mr. Phillips, on the part of large * numbers of our citizens, that it kas been found that the Senate chamber which was granted for his use, will be entirely inade. gusto to aocommodate the crowd. " The Hut chinson Family," who are giving a series of successful concerts at Brant's Hall, have, in view of the occasion of Mr. Phillips' visit to Harrisburg, consentel to waive their concert, proper, for this evening, that the people may listen to Mr. Phillips. They will be present, however, and sing some of their most stirring songs both before and after the speech, so that those who would bear them both will do well to go early to secure a seat. It is not often that our citizens are favored with-such singing and such speaking as they will hear to night. See the card of the Hutch inson family. Doors open to gentlemen, with ladies, at half-past 6 o'clock. Tickets, 2bcts: A CARD. At the request of the friends of Wendel Phillips, who was announced to speak in the Senate chamber this evening, I cheerfully con sent to surrender the use of Brant's Hall to him for that purpose, as the Senate chamber is not sufficiently large to accommodate those who will wish to attend his lecture. We will, how ever, be present and sing some patriotic songs, both' before and after the address, JOHN. W. IA Ptak POE THZ CANAL. —The amount of freight pressing on the Pennsylvania railroad at Pittsbug, has, in some measure, directed public attention to the canal as a means of transporta tion between there and Philadelphia, and it is urged that with proper facilities the greater part of the oil sent east from , the oil districts might be forwarded by this route. The Phila. delphia North American, in an article on the subject, urges that additional means of trans portion be provided on the Allegheny river, and suggests that as the oil reaches Pittsburg it be shipped east by the canal. It says : "Canal transportation being less costly than that by railway, the oil could be made a steady and re liable business for the old canal from Pittsburg east, if the company now owning it would give encouragement for that purpose. This is the more desirable in view of the fact that the Penn sylvania railroad has been so crowded with busi ness as to be compelled to decline receiving any more freight at times. Products like-oil, which do not necessarily demand rapid transit, could be shipped by the canal lines, and thus ma terially relieve the railroad. Philadelphia has canal transportation via the Schuylkill, Union Susquehanna, Juniata and West Branch lines to Hollidaysburg and Lock Haven. The latter is of no avail for oil transportation, in conse quence of the unfinished state of the Erie railroad. But the canal route to Hollidaysburg, though belonging to two different Corporations, ought to be made available, since it is evident that the. Pennsylvania railroad is unable to do all the busi ness on its cars. We troat that these oomPanies will see the necessity of doing something to accommodate this great and growing trade, and not let it slip from their grasp and find its way to New York via the Erie railroad."
