A very unfortunate degree of ignorance is foundto exist in our in regard to the generous provi slon mad© by the Stato of Penn'a, for the mainte nance and-Cdacation of the destitute orphans of Sol diers and Sailors, who lost their lives in the late war. Arrive. The State proposes to assume the guardianship of these children, and thus in part, to repay the great debt we to our soldiers, living and dead, and : of which it hasshecn truly said. “ It is the only debt the country never can discharge in fall." ' The fund appropriated to this purpose was-origi nally a donation of $50,000, made to the State by the! Penn'a R. R. Co. early in the war. As the money; was not used in defraying war expenses, Gov. Curtin, with hi* ever thoughtful care for the soldiers, pro posed to the Legislature that it should be devoted to the relief of destitute children, made orphans by the war. An act to this effect was passed the session of 1864, authorizing the Governor to arrange all detail of its management. He immediately committed the charge into the hands of Dr. Thos. H. Burrowes, as “ Superintendent of Soldiers' Orphans," a moat judi cious selection, as the Dr. h&s had a life-long interest in educational affairs,'and as former Stato Supctin tendent of Common Schools had much valuable ex perience, and is wall known for bis general benevo lence and kindness of heart. He- has a salary and is allowed a clerk, and is the only salaried officer, except - teachers- ■ - . He at once appointed a committee of five persons in each county, Whose business was to search for such orphans as were entitled to the benefits of the net, and when the parents were willing to make applica tion for the entrance into.the'State Schools, the Com mittee would furnish them with the needful blanks, and forward them when properly filledt»at and attest ed. to the Superintendent. These Committees receive ho Compensation for their services, but pay all their own expenses when on duty. (Their postage is to be refunded, lam informed,) I am thus minute and explicit -In order that there iryny bo no'mistake, and no misrepresentation on this .head. It is purely a labor of love on their part, stimulated -by a sense of duty towards these unfortunate little ' ones. * " * - * * The Legislature of 3865 made auiaddilional appro priation of $75,000 for tho same purpose, and there is no doubt it will he made a permanent thing, for the length of time required—f. e., until! the youngest or phan shall be sixteon'years of age. , Our noble' old Commonwealth has thus made a just and generous provision for these children, and the best: of and asylums are provided for them, os near : their homes as the case will admit. BALDWIN, v peculiar taint or in£»J; which wa call Scao4r lurk* in the cocstitifr of multitudes of mail either produces or is luced by an anfeeblad, itcd state of tile blood, ’ .■rein that Said becooes impetcnt to sustain the I forces intheirrigorous. in, and leaves the sys to fall into disorder i decay. The scrofulous itamination is varioßsljr tad by mercurial aUf .■red digestion ffotn uzt --.uny ». .., imputv ■, filth and filthy habits, the depressing rices, and, above all, by the real infection. Whatever be its origin, it Is hered itary in the constitution, descending “ fromparsfats to children unto the third and fourth generation; ” indeed, it seems to be the rod of Him who says, “I will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon tbtfr children." The diseases it originates take variobs names, according to the organs it attacks. In tfet lungs, Scrofula produces tubercles, and finally Consumption; in the glands, swellings which «oB* imratc and become ulcerous sores; in the stonwgh and bowels, derangements which produce iso gestion, dyspepsia, and liver complaints; CD tbs skin, eruptive and cutaneous affections. Tbsss, all having the same origin, require the same rem edy, viz-, purification and invigoratibn o£ tbs blood. Purify the blood, and these dangerous dis tempers leave you. With feeble, fool, or oorruptsd blood, you cannot have health; with that “UfS of the flesh" healthy, you cannot hare sccofidcu disease. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla , | is compounded from the most effectual antidote that medical science has discovered for this affliof-. ing distemper, and for the cure of the disorder* fll entails. That it is far superior to any otb*tj remedy yet devised, is known by ail who hart’ given it a trial. That it does combine virtaaa truly extraordinary in their effect upon this class of complaints, is indisputably proven "by the great multitude of publicly known and remarkable cafes it has made, of the following diseases: Sag's Evil, or Glandular Swellings, Temurs, Erup tions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Erysipdu, Boss or St Anthony’s Eire, Salt Shemn, scald Head, Coughs from tuberculous deposits in the lungs. White Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and Syphilitic Infections, Heitrarial Diseases, Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole serfs* of complaints that arise from impurity of tho blood. Minute reports of individual cases may be found in A Ten’s American Aiaiakac, which is furnished to tho druggists for gratuitous distribution, wherein may be learned the directions for its use, and some of the remarkable cures which it has made when all other remedies had failed to afford relief. Thaw cases are purposely taken from all sections of the country, in order that every reader may have ac cess to some one who can speak to him of its bene fits from personal experience. Scrofula depress** the vital energies, and thus leaves its victims far more subject to disease and its fatal Results than are healthy constitutions. Hence it tends to shorten, and does greatly shorten, the average duration of ;hnman life. The vast importance of these con- [ siderations has led us to spend years in perfecting a remedy which is adequate to its cure. This wa now offer to the public under the' name of Atsr’s Sarsai-aiu i.la, although it is composed of ingre’- dients, some of which exceed the best of Sarsa parilla in alterative power. By its aid you may protect yourself from tho suffering and danger of these disprders. Purge out the foul corruptions that rot and fester in the blood, purge out the causes of disease, and vigorous health will follow. By its peculiar virtues this remedy stimulates the vital functions, and thus expels the distempers which lurk within the system or burst out on any part ok it. We, know the public have been deceived by many compounds of Sarsaparilla, that promised much and did nothing; but they will neither be deceived nor disappointed in this. Its virtue* have been proven by abundant trial, and there remain* no question of it* surpassing excellence for the cure of the afflicting diseases it is intended to reaoh. Although under the same name, it is a. very different medicine from any other which has been before the people, and is fer more effectual than any other which has ever been available to them. AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL, The World’s Great Remedy for Coughs, Colds, Incipient Consumption, and for the relief of Consumptive patients in advanced ata- „ ges of the disease, ; This has been so long used and so universally known, that wc need-do no more than assure the public that its quality is kept up to the best it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to do all it lias ever done.
